Alcoholic Shirley Temple

April 22, 2026

An adult twist on the classic mocktail, this Alcoholic Shirley Temple adds a little extra cheer to your celebration with a splash of vodka.

An alcoholic Shirley Temple is a playful twist on the classic non-alcoholic mocktail, transforming a nostalgic childhood drink into a vibrant adult cocktail. Known for its bright color, sweet flavor, and fizzy texture, it keeps the original charm while adding a spirited kick that makes it popular at parties and casual gatherings.

The traditional Shirley Temple is made with ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, a splash of grenadine, and often garnished with maraschino cherries. In the alcoholic version, a clear spirit such as vodka or light rum is added to introduce depth without overpowering the drink’s signature sweetness. The result is a refreshing cocktail that remains light, bubbly, and easy to sip.

One of the most appealing aspects of this drink is its balance between sweetness and acidity. The grenadine provides a fruity, candy-like flavor, while the citrus soda adds brightness and effervescence. The alcohol blends seamlessly into this mix, enhancing the drink without changing its familiar profile too drastically.

Presentation plays a big role in its appeal. Served over ice in a tall glass, the drink’s pink-red hue makes it visually striking. Garnishes such as cherries, citrus slices, or even a sugared candied lemon peel can elevate its appearance and make it feel festive and fun.

The alcoholic Shirley Temple is also highly adaptable. It can be adjusted to suit different tastes by changing the type or amount of alcohol, or by experimenting with flavored syrups and sodas. Some versions lean more toward a cocktail feel, while others keep the sweetness at the forefront for a lighter experience.

With its nostalgic roots and modern twist, the alcoholic Shirley Temple bridges childhood memories with adult enjoyment. It remains a popular choice for those who want something colorful, sweet, and refreshingly simple.

Tried it last night, and it was ok but kinda too sweet for my taste. Maybe I’ll reduce the grenadine next time.

Meh, just a glorified soda. 1 star.

I used rum instead of vodka and it was lit! Highly recommend mixing it up! 🌟

This drink is so good! I never thought I’d like a Shirley Temple with alcohol, but it’s awesome! 5 stars!

    1. 5 stars
I must try this! I usually drink just the regular Shirley Temple, but this sounds fun. Thanks for sharing!

    2. User avatar Dane Boyer says:

      3 stars
Really? A Shirley Temple with alcohol? That sounds kinda weird like mix. Are you sure it’s good? 🤔

  6. User avatar gertrude.schowalter2 says:

    4 stars
Really simple drink, I made it for my friends and we all loved it! Will be making again!

  7. 3 stars
Ginger ale with vodka?🤔 Sounds weird. Is it really good tho? Asking for a friend.

Serve with gummy bears and it’s a party! 🍬🍹

  9. 2 stars
The maraschino cherry was too much for me. Just prefer my drinks plain, I guess…

    1. 4 stars
I understand! Some people don’t like the sweetness of the cherry. You could always skip it next time!

    2. 2 stars
But the cherry is the best part! It adds a nice touch, I think ur missing out

  10. User avatar wiley.grimes2005 says:

    2 stars
Not really a fan. I thought it’d be more refreshing but just felt like soda with a kick. 2/5.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! It’s kinda sweet and doesn’t have that bright zing you’re expecting. Maybe try a splash of lime next time for a refresher? 🍋

  11. User avatar steve_maga says:

    5 stars
So good!! 10/10 would make again—this is my new lazy party drink. I skipped the orange slice once and it still slaps, but the garnish is cute.

  12. User avatar valery.kuphal says:

    2 stars
Meh. Too sweet for my taste. I’d rather do a virgin one—alcohol feels unnecessary.

  13. 2 stars
I didn’t have grenadine so I used raspberry syrup and it was… okay? Could be worse. Ginger ale + vodka is the real star here.

    1. User avatar joycelyn.romaguera13 says:

      4 stars
Honestly, that sounds like it still works. Raspberry syrup has that same sweet-tart vibe as grenadine—maybe just a different flavor profile. Glad you tried it!

    2. User avatar gerardo.bayer says:

      2 stars
Wait, ginger ale + vodka?? That’s gonna taste like cough medicine 😅 But if you liked it, I guess. How much raspberry syrup did you use?

  14. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about “alcoholic shirley temple” names, but it actually worked. Stir gently like the instructions say or it gets kinda cloudy.

    1. User avatar cameron.stoltenberg99 says:

      5 stars
I felt the same—“alcoholic” just sounds wrong—but honestly it’s a really nice sweet/tart drink. I also noticed if you stir too hard it turns kinda cloudy like you said.

  15. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    3 stars
Had to substitute vodka for something else and it was fine, but flavor changed a bit. The ginger ale does most of the heavy lifting here. Easy drink though.

    1. User avatar leena.beier24 says:

      5 stars
Agree—this is super easy. I used a different vodka brand and mine tasted a little sweeter, but still really refreshing. Chilled ginger ale is key.

    2. User avatar Lumberjack says:

      3 stars
I tried it once and my ginger ale was warm 😬 wasn’t great. Also I didn’t have grenadine so I just used some syrup—didn’t taste the same, but it got me through. Easy though!

  16. 5 stars
This recipe is like a childhood drink but with a kick! Love it!

  17. User avatar homer.bahringer36 says:

    3 stars
Meh, it was alright. Didn’t taste much difference from regular ginger ale.

  18. User avatar barton.langosh2000 says:

    4 stars
My ginger ale wasn’t chilled and… yeah, it tasted flat. Lesson learned. When I remade with chilled soda it was way better.

    1. 3 stars
Hmm I think I’d still chill the grenadine too… or maybe use less ginger ale so it doesn’t taste weak? My first attempt was kinda flat like that too.

    2. User avatar mariette.kozey says:

      5 stars
That makes total sense—ginger ale really changes once it’s cold. Glad your second try came out better!

  19. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 1 oz grenadine might be too much for me. Next time I’ll start smaller and adjust. Still refreshing!

  20. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
This tastes like a grown-up Shirley Temple! The grenadine gives it that perfect sweet-tart vibe without being too syrupy. I used a splash less vodka and it still worked great.

  21. User avatar vashti.simonis1977 says:

    3 stars
Not sure I’d call this a Shirley Temple… it’s more like a vodka ginger fizz with grenadine. Still refreshing though. Would be better with fresh lime maybe?

  22. User avatar annika.ledner says:

    1 star
    Meh.

  23. User avatar rachel.stiedemann says:

    5 stars
Easy to make and looks cute in a tall glass. I followed the instructions exactly and served immediately—perfect for parties.

  24. 4 stars
Not sure I’d call it “Shirley Temple” since it has vodka, but honestly it’s tasty. I think my grenadine was too sweet though, so next time I’ll start with less.

    1. User avatar dale.morissette1983 says:

      5 stars
Yeah that makes sense—Shirley Temples are usually booze-free, so the vodka is kind of the whole point. 😄 If your grenadine was super sweet, I’d try cutting it back or even tasting after stirring and adding a splash more only if needed.

  25. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

    1 star
I just cant understand why they put alcohol in this… Seems wrong…

    1. User avatar angelo.rowe40 says:

      4 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but the alcohol adds a fun twist! Not everyone wants a kid’s drink, you know?

  26. User avatar tad.reinger says:

    2 stars
    I don’t think vodka belongs in a Shirley Temple… isn’t it supposed to be kid-friendly? 🤔

  27. 4 stars
Simple and delicious! I added a splash of pineapple juice and it was amazing!

  28. User avatar lizzzard says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps and it looked super pretty, but the flavor was kinda flat. Maybe my ginger ale wasn’t cold enough?

  29. 5 stars
so good!!! i added more cherry juice and it was probably the best drink ever. lol

  30. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    4 stars
The instructions are super clear and it’s ready in minutes. Only thing: my grenadine was a bit too much, so it turned kinda syrupy. Stir gently like it says!

    1. User avatar stan.mitchell says:

      4 stars
I usually skip the grenadine a lot cuz it makes it sweet like candy. But yeah “stir gently” is important—if you mix too hard it gets all thick or something. Thanks!

    2. User avatar garnet.ernser1989 says:

      5 stars
Ahh that makes sense—grenadine can get a little overpowering if you’re generous. Next time I’ll start with less and taste it before adding more. Great tip!

  31. 3 stars
Feels a little weird calling it Shirley Temple but adding vodka. Still, it’s cute and refreshing. Probably good for parties where people want sweet drinks.

  32. 5 stars
Sooo good! I made it for a party and everyone loved it! 10/10 recommend!

  33. User avatar porsche.mohr2016 says:

    5 stars
This tastes like a grown-up version of the soda I loved as a kid. I used slightly less grenadine and it was perfect—sweet but not cloying.

    1. User avatar shiela.quitzon86 says:

      5 stars
Yesss! I love that description—grown-up Shirley Temple is exactly what this feels like. I’m glad less grenadine worked for you. I’ll try your ratio next time!

    2. User avatar sonny.trantow94 says:

      3 stars
I dunno… mine came out super sweet, like candy soda, even though I followed the ounces. Maybe my ginger ale was the sweet kind? Still tasty though, just not “not cloying” for me.

  34. User avatar kurtis.hermann90 says:

    5 stars

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve been blogging for a couple of years now. Happy to share recipes!

  37. User avatar adam.nitzsche says:

    4 stars
Really easy to make, just watch the sweetness—my first try I dumped in too much grenadine and it became syrupy fast. Next time I’ll measure.

  38. User avatar jermaine.reichel says:

    4 stars
My grenadine was way too sweet, so I ended up adding extra ginger ale. Once adjusted, it tasted great.

  39. User avatar Shrine Maidens says:

    5 stars
Tastes way better than I expected—ginger ale + grenadine is such a solid combo. I used a little extra grenadine and it came out perfectly sweet. Would make again.

  40. 3 stars
Not bad, but “stir gently” is important—mine got a bit foamy and looked weird in the glass. Flavor still saved it.

  41. User avatar Robin Andis Merryman says:

    4 stars
Tried it tonight and it was surprisingly good. The vodka doesn’t overpower at all. Chilling the ginger ale really matters.

  42. User avatar leeanne.gulgowski2013 says:

    1 star
    Meh.

  43. 4 stars
5/5 if you like sweet drinks. If you don’t, reduce the grenadine. I actually used half an ounce and it was perfect.

  44. User avatar Vroomfondel says:

    2 stars
One cherry and one slice of orange is not enough, I feel like. Also I stirred too aggressively and it got watery. Won’t be my go-to, sorry.

    1. User avatar wilmer.keebler says:

      4 stars
Hmm I’ve found 1 cherry + 1 orange slice is more for looks than flavor, but I get what you mean—could definitely use more fruit if you like it punchier.

  45. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the point of this. Why not just do a classic Shirley Temple with no vodka? The drink ends up sweet but kinda boozy in a weird way.

  46. 4 stars
Ginger ale + vodka is a weird idea but it worked! I stirred gently like the recipe says and it didn’t get too foamy.

    1. User avatar christopher.ondricka2012 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—ginger ale + vodka sounds kinda off, but the grenadine makes it work. Nice tip about stirring gently, I’ve had it get foamy when I go too hard.

  47. 5 stars
Tried this last night—surprisingly tasty. The grenadine makes it sweet without tasting like straight syrup. I used a cheap vodka and it was still good. Nice “adult” twist!

  48. User avatar Farengar says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical because it sounds like a kid drink with vodka… but it actually works. The cherry + orange garnish makes it feel fancy.

    1. User avatar teodoro.konopelski60 says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too, but the garnish tip is honestly what sells it. Cherry + orange makes it taste way more “grown-up” than I expected.

  49. User avatar amos.bergstrom13 says:

    5 stars
I made this for friends and everyone kept asking for the recipe. The cherry/orange garnish looks fancy too. Chilling the ginger ale really helps.

    1. User avatar lanny.vandervort26 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—sounds like a total crowd-pleaser. I love how the cherry/orange makes it look way more “fancy” than it is. Gonna try chilling the ginger ale too, great tip!

  50. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

    1 star
Wow 1.5 oz vodka seems like too much—mine kicked harder than I thought. Ginger ale helps but still strong. Next time I’ll cut the vodka in half.

  51. User avatar stacey.raynor says:

    2 stars
Meh. Too sweet for me and I couldn’t taste the vodka at all. Also my orange slice fell right in… whoops.

  52. User avatar han.jones2012 says:

    5 stars
This actually tastes like a grown-up Shirley Temple—sweet, fizzy, and the vodka doesn’t overpower it. I used a sweeter grenadine and it was perfect.

  53. User avatar Torchbugs says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have vodka so I used gin and… wow, not the same vibe. The ginger ale was good though. Next time I’ll stick to vodka like the recipe says.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—vodka really keeps it crisp. Gin can get too herbal/boozy, like it’s a different drink 😅 Ginger ale rescue is real though!

  54. User avatar ernie.hand says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I think “alcoholic Shirley Temple” is a stretch. It’s more like a vodka ginger ale spritzer with cherry. But I did enjoy it.

  55. 3 stars
Not bad, but 1.5 oz vodka feels a little strong with sweet grenadine. Next time I’ll cut the vodka in half and see.

    1. User avatar page.hammes75 says:

      5 stars
I agree—1.5 oz vodka can overpower the grenadine. Cutting it down sounds perfect. Let us know how it turns out!

    2. User avatar clair.turner49 says:

      3 stars
Maybe don’t cut vodka—just use more grenadine?? I always do 2 oz vodka and it tastes like candy lol. But yeah sweet drinks can get boozy quick.

  56. User avatar linh.paucek37 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was… okay? The sweetness felt a little flat at first, like it needed more grenadine, but then it got too syrupy. Hard to dial in.

  57. User avatar bryanna.crooks61 says:

    2 stars
My grenadine sank to the bottom and didn’t really mix well, so it looked like a weird red layer. Taste was still good, just not pretty.

  58. User avatar Kiesha Price says:

    4 stars
If you’re using a really sweet grenadine, go light—otherwise it turns syrupy fast. Still, it’s refreshing.

  59. User avatar Sabine Dibbert says:

    2 stars
I used gin instead of vodka once and honestly it tasted better to me. Not sure if that’s “correct” but 🤷‍♂️

  60. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out fine, but it’s kinda strong for a “Shirley Temple” vibe. Maybe go a little lighter on the vodka.

  61. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

    4 stars
One cherry is not enough. I’m just saying. I added two and it was way better.

    1. User avatar kyla.farrell1961 says:

      5 stars
Haha I get you—one cherry always feels stingy. Two sounds perfect for the vibe.

  62. User avatar bobbye.waelchi says:

    5 stars
Tried it tonight—so easy. The grenadine + ginger ale combo is honestly perfect. I used a splash less grenadine and it still tasted great.

  63. User avatar rolland.breitenberg says:

    4 stars
The orange slice garnish is underrated. Makes it feel fancy without any extra effort. Would serve this to guests.

  64. 3 stars
Mine looked super red and kinda cloudy at first, like the grenadine didn’t mix. Stirring longer fixed it though.

  65. User avatar deb.jakubowski58 says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about vodka + ginger ale + grenadine, but wow. The balance is actually really nice. Chilling the ginger ale mattered a lot.

  66. 3 stars
I tried it and mine looked kinda pinky-red but the flavor was meh… maybe I over-stirred? Also 1.5 oz vodka felt strong for me, but I guess it depends.

    1. User avatar modesta.considine says:

      4 stars
Pinkish-red makes sense with the grenadine—if it turned more red than expected, I wonder if it was just the ratio you used. “Meh” is usually either too much vodka or the ginger ale being flat. I’d try stirring like 2-3 gentle turns only and definitely use chilled ginger ale.

  67. User avatar Jamie VonRueden says:

    5 stars
I only had ginger beer and used that instead of ginger ale—way better bite. I might never go back.

  68. 4 stars
I liked the flavor, but 1 oz grenadine was a little too sweet for me. Next time I’ll start with like 1/2 oz and adjust. Also I only had orange juice, not an orange slice, so I improvised.

  69. User avatar Reatha Towne I says:

    2 stars
I made it exactly and it came out kinda sour? Maybe my grenadine was old. Either way, the garnish was cute.

  70. User avatar sherita.tremblay says:

    2 stars
Meh. Too sweet and the vodka taste kinda shows through even with grenadine.
