Tomato Recall in 14 States Over Salmonella Concerns

May 5, 2025

Two tomato brands have been recalled across 14 U.S. states due to potential salmonella contamination, according to a recent announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Ray & Mascari Inc. has voluntarily recalled its four-count Vine Ripe tomatoes, which were sold at Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states including New York, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The recall stems from a notification by Hanshaw & Caping Farms in Immokalee, Florida, which had originally supplied the tomatoes. The farm reported a potential salmonella presence in its facility, prompting the downstream recall.

Salmonella infection can cause symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramps. Though no illnesses linked to these tomatoes have been reported so far, the FDA advises consumers to discard the product or return unopened packages to the place of purchase. Those at highest risk include children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, as salmonella can, in rare cases, lead to serious complications.

In a separate notice, Williams Farms Repack LLC announced a recall of tomatoes distributed to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia between April 23 and April 28, 2025.

The recalled tomatoes were sold in clear plastic clamshells labeled “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” and marked as “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc.”

Additional affected states include Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
