Spiderweb Chocolate Cake

October 23, 2024

Spiderweb Chocolate Cake is a spook-tacular dessert that combines rich, moist chocolate cake with a creative, Halloween-inspired decoration. This cake is not only visually striking but also delicious, making it a perfect centerpiece for Halloween parties, family gatherings, or themed events. With its indulgent chocolate flavor and dramatic spiderweb design, it’s sure to impress your guests while satisfying their sweet tooth.

The base of this cake is a decadent, moist chocolate cake made with simple ingredients that deliver a rich and tender crumb. Whether you bake a layer cake or a single round, the cake itself is the perfect canvas for your spooky spiderweb design. The dark chocolate cake pairs wonderfully with a smooth, velvety chocolate frosting that adds both flavor and a bit of luxury to each bite.

The real fun comes with the spiderweb decoration. After the cake is frosted, a contrasting white icing is piped into a simple spiderweb pattern across the top of the cake. Using a toothpick or knife, the web is then carefully pulled from the center outwards, creating the iconic spiderweb look. For added flair, a small plastic or candy spider can be placed in the center or crawling along the edges of the web, adding that final creepy touch.

What makes Spiderweb Chocolate Cake so appealing is its combination of textures and flavors. The richness of the chocolate cake and frosting is balanced by the delicate sweetness of the spiderweb icing. It’s indulgent without being overwhelmingly sweet, making it a great choice for those who love chocolate but don’t want a cake that’s too heavy.

This cake is an easy and fun project for Halloween baking. Kids will love helping with the spiderweb decoration, and it’s a simple way to make a dessert look impressive without requiring advanced baking skills. Whether you’re serving it at a party, enjoying it with family, or taking it to a Halloween potluck, Spiderweb Chocolate Cake is a dessert that combines spooky fun with a deliciously decadent treat.

Spiderweb cake!!! I love Halloween and this recipe is perfect!

  2. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

350°F is fine but 30-35 mins feels short for two 9-inch layers. I’d start checking at 28 and go by the toothpick.

  3. User avatar jeremiah.lind says:

Yummy! My kids loved helping with the spiderweb part! 😊 Definitely a fun family activity.

    1. User avatar ronald.murray says:

      5 stars
That sounds like a blast! I love when kids get involved in cooking. What age are your kids?

Spiderwebs on cake?? So creative! But what if I don’t like white chocolate? Can I use something else?

  5. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have boiling water, I used cold. It turned out kinda mushy. Wouldn’t recommend 😩

  6. 3 stars
I don’t really get the whole spiderweb thing… are we eating cake or catching spiders?

  7. 3 stars
Not sure about 2 cups sugar—seems like a lot. Also the boiling water step freaked me out, I was like what am I doing 😅 But it still tasted good.

  8. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    3 stars
Just okay. The cake was a bit too sweet for my taste… I prefer a more bitter chocolate flavor. Also, the frosting got kinda messy.

    1. User avatar randell.brown25 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I also prefer a richer chocolate taste. Maybe try adding some espresso powder next time? It really balances out the sweetness!

  9. 5 stars
Y’all, this is the best recipe ever! So simple and looks fancy. My kids loved making the spiderwebs! 🎃

    1. User avatar alejandro.yost1990 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you and your kids enjoyed it! The spiderwebs are such a fun touch! 🕷️🎂

    2. User avatar Jeromy Quitzon DVM says:

      3 stars
This seems nice, but honestly, my kids hate chocolate. Do you think it works with vanilla instead?

  10. User avatar sunni.price78 says:

    4 stars
I like the idea of the spiderweb top. My white chocolate always seizes though… anyone have a trick to keep it smooth?

  11. User avatar jordon.stoltenberg says:

    3 stars
The instructions are easy, but 2 cups sugar feels like a lot (it is). My family likes sweet so it worked, but I’d cut sugar a bit next run.

  12. 3 stars
Um, I don’t know about using boiling water. Seemed kinda weird. The cake turned out alright, but I was nervous.

  13. User avatar Leda Thompson says:

    2 stars
    Use a whisk? Can’t I just use a fork? 🤔

  14. User avatar wilbert.braun79 says:

    2 stars
I followed everything but I think my oven runs hot—edges got a bit dry. Otherwise the crumb was fine. Also, room temp eggs/milk mattered a lot.

  15. User avatar Chi Shenlong says:

    5 stars
This cake recipe is AMAZING! I made it for Halloween and everyone loved the spiderweb design! Will make again.

    1. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

      5 stars
Wow, that sounds so fun! I’m glad it was a hit for Halloween! Can you share a pic?

    2. User avatar doretta.flatley32 says:

      3 stars
Spiderweb design? Sounds weird but interesting! Did it taste good too?

  16. User avatar lupe.schmitt1963 says:

    2 stars
Highly overrated. The flavor was just okay, and it didn’t look like the picture. Should’ve just bought one.

  17. 4 stars
I followed everything but my web slid a bit because the white chocolate was too warm. Chill the piping bag/cake longer—lesson learned.

    1. User avatar Link's Uncle says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—warm white chocolate gets runny fast. Next time I’ll chill the piping bag longer too. Thanks for the real-world tip!

  18. User avatar robena.gerhold32 says:

    3 stars
350°F and 30-35 minutes… mine was dry at 35. Next time I’ll pull it at like 28 and maybe add a bit more vanilla or oil.

    1. User avatar sun.lehner52 says:

      5 stars
Good call—pulling at ~28 min makes sense. Since the batter is super thin, it can go from “just right” to “dry” fast. I’ll keep an eye on mine too.

  19. User avatar lean.hill48 says:

    4 stars
My piping bag skills are basically zero, so the spiderweb might become a spaghetti web. But the chocolate cake part looks legit, so I’d make it even without the design.

  20. User avatar jennefer.strosin52 says:

    5 stars
Baked it and it came out so fluffy! I can’t believe I made this from scratch. Thanks for the easy instructions!

    1. 5 stars
Wow, that’s amazing! I’m so glad it turned out fluffy for you. I can’t wait to try this recipe myself!

  21. 4 stars
Quick question: can I use milk chocolate instead of white for the spiderweb? 🤔

  22. User avatar bobby.larkin57 says:

    1 star
This is just a chocolate cake with some icing, nothing special.

  23. 3 stars
Seems a bit too sweet with 2 cups sugar AND cocoa AND more chocolate on top. Might cut the sugar down next time.

  24. 5 stars
This cake is a total showstopper! The spiderweb design is so cute, and it tastes divine. My kids loved it!

    1. User avatar lilly.skiles84 says:

      5 stars
I tried making this cake for my kids’ Halloween party, and it turned out awesome! Thank you for sharing this recipe! 🎃

  25. User avatar doug.cronin2018 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, the batter was way too runny. I think it could use more flour. My cake ended up flat!

  26. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    1 star
Why use boiling water? Isn’t that gonna ruin the eggs? I didn’t try this recipe, sounds silly…

  27. User avatar sanford.zemlak62 says:

    1 star
Not good. Tasted burnt and it was super dense. Never making this again.

  28. User avatar opal.muller says:

    4 stars
I tried something similar and the white chocolate web usually melts weirdly. Any tips to stop it from running? Otherwise the flavor seems solid.

    1. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

      4 stars
Yeah, white chocolate can get runny fast. I usually melt it super gently (microwave in 15–20 sec bursts) and let it cool a couple minutes before piping—thicker is easier to control.

  29. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

    5 stars
This cake is so delicious! The chocolate flavor is to die for. My family loved it, and it looked pretty too with that spiderweb decoration!

  30. User avatar manual.reinger29 says:

    3 stars
The white chocolate decoration—do you melt it with a little oil or butter? Mine got too thick and wouldn’t pipe.

    1. User avatar lucky777 says:

      5 stars
I usually melt the white chocolate gently first, and I don’t add much—just a tiny splash of oil if it’s too thick. If it thickened, it likely cooled too fast; rewarm slightly and keep it thin enough to pipe.

  31. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
Perfect for spooky season! It was a hit at the party!

    1. User avatar cathrine.zboncak30 says:

      3 stars
Was it really that good? I tried a different chocolate cake and it was just okay.

    2. User avatar melina.christiansen2014 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you and your guests loved it! The spiderweb decoration is such a fun touch.

  32. 2 stars
I tried making this cake and it came out all messed up. The layers fell apart. I dunno what went wrong…

  33. User avatar easter.dickinson says:

    2 stars
This cake is just chocolate overload! Too sweet for my taste. I prefer a simple vanilla.

  34. User avatar cassi.rutherford says:

    4 stars
Good but I guess I overbaked it. The texture wasn’t right… still tasted fine tho!

  35. User avatar Johnie Wyman says:

    4 stars
I tried a similar chocolate cake with boiling water and it was surprisingly good, so I’m on board. The spiderweb piping idea is also cute—definitely a vibe.

  36. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    3 stars
It’s just a chocolate cake… like we needed another one? Meh.

  37. User avatar wendy.pouros says:

    5 stars
This sounds like the perfect “wow” cake for Halloween. The batter being thin but still baking up to a tender crumb makes me hopeful. I might add a pinch more vanilla though.

    1. User avatar lise.ryan says:

      4 stars
Sounds great but I’m confused: it says 1 cup boiling water. Won’t that make it weird/watery? I guess the thin batter is intentional though… I’ll trust it 😅

    2. User avatar lasandra.kohler1983 says:

      5 stars
I love that it bakes up tender even with thin batter—those are always the best chocolate cakes. I’d definitely try your extra pinch of vanilla; it helps the cocoa taste pop.

  38. 4 stars
Hey, do you think I can substitute the white chocolate with dark chocolate? I only have dark chocolate at home.

    1. User avatar reinaldo.balistreri says:

      4 stars
Yeah, you can use dark chocolate! It will make the cake richer. Just keep in mind it’ll taste different than the white chocolate. Good luck!

  39. User avatar esmeralda.davis says:

    5 stars
Made this for Halloween and it came out super fudgy. The spiderweb look was honestly the easiest part—kids loved it.

  40. 4 stars
Bakin it tonight! Hoping for good results. Wish me luck!

  41. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    3 stars
I tried making the white chocolate spiral but it seized up on me (maybe my piping bag wasn’t dry?). Cake itself was fine, but decoration was a fail.

  42. 5 stars
So good! My family asked me to make it again for Halloween. The crumb is very chocolatey and tender. 10/10 for presentation too.

  43. 5 stars
This cake is a masterpiece! The kids loved it at the Halloween party.

  44. User avatar cameron.stracke1973 says:

    4 stars
The spiderweb design was super fun to make! My kids loved it. 😊

  45. 3 stars
I followed everything, but mine sank a little in the middle. I’m guessing my oven runs hot? Also the 30-35 minutes didn’t feel long enough.

  46. User avatar cordell.braun86 says:

    5 stars
Wow, this cake looks so cool! Can’t wait to try it for Halloween!

  47. 3 stars
The measurements look a little… intense? 2 cups sugar feels like a lot for that amount of cocoa, but maybe the icing balances it. I’d taste the batter? 😅

    1. 4 stars
Right?? 2 cups sugar sounds like way too much with only 3/4 cup cocoa. But I’ve learned this kind of cake often turns out better than it sounds—thin batter + baking usually fixes it. I would definitely taste a tiny bit of batter 😅

  48. 5 stars
Just made this for Halloween, and it was a hit! Dark and spooky treat for the kids. 🎃

  49. User avatar tiffaney.littel31 says:

    3 stars
What is the purpose of the boiling water? Does it actually make a difference? I got a cake recipe that was similar, and it didn’t call for it.

  50. 5 stars
    Yummy!!!

    1. 5 stars
I can’t wait to try this! Looks so good! 😍

  51. User avatar omer.barton2 says:

    5 stars
This cake is like chocolate heaven!! 🍫 I didn’t do the spiderweb cause I’m not that good at decorating. Still awesome!

  52. User avatar earl.crooks15 says:

    3 stars
Too much sugar, I think! It tasted more like candy than cake.

    1. 5 stars
I don’t think it’s too much sugar, it’s a dessert after all! Candy cakes are the best!

    2. User avatar numbers.kihn2024 says:

      4 stars
Honestly, you can just reduce the sugar next time. But I love my cake sweet! 😋

  53. User avatar Librada Beahan says:

    2 stars
I had a hard time with the icing. It didn’t turn out like the picture. Super frustrating!

  54. User avatar darin.klein61 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I made it for my parents’ anniversary, and it was a hit. Will make it again for sure!

    1. User avatar jaleesa.damore79 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Your parents must have loved it. Such a creative cake for an anniversary! 🎉

  55. User avatar hector.dicki1971 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the 30-35 min part with 2 layers. Mine took longer and I had to cover the tops. Still good though—rich chocolate flavor.

  56. User avatar sung.prohaska71 says:

    5 stars
Love this recipe! It’s super easy and super YUMMY!! Just glazed it instead of the spiderweb, and it was awesome.

    1. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Glazing sounds like a great idea, I’ll have to try that next time!

  57. 2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly but my cake didn’t rise. What went wrong?

    1. User avatar israel.lynch says:

      3 stars
idk maybe u didn’t mix it enough or ur oven isn’t hot enough. try again it could be better next time!

    2. User avatar leslie.bins1966 says:

      4 stars
Maybe your baking powder or soda is old? They can lose their power over time. Check the dates next time!

  58. 5 stars
This is delightfully dramatic—my whole family kept asking where I got the “fancy bakery” look. The batter being thin didn’t bother me, and it still baked up perfectly moist.

  59. User avatar drew.cummings39 says:

    4 stars
My oven runs hot—30 minutes was perfect. If yours runs cold, give it a few extra minutes. Also cool completely or the web smears.

  60. 5 stars
This sounds dangerously good—boiling water + cocoa usually makes the crumb super fudgy. I’m making this for a spooky party and acting like it’s “easy.”

    1. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

      5 stars
Right?! Boiling water + cocoa is like instant fudginess. “Easy” for sure… until it’s gone in 5 minutes 😅

    2. User avatar oralee.schimmel75 says:

      4 stars
Spooky party cake is such a vibe. I love that the batter gets thin—means it bakes up rich instead of dry.

  61. User avatar scottie.huels1975 says:

    5 stars
This cake is a hit at every party! Rich chocolate flavor and the spiderweb decoration is so cool! 5 stars!!

  62. User avatar margeret.lubowitz21 says:

    3 stars
Why does it need boiling water? Seems weird to me. But maybe it’s a good trick? I dunno.

  63. User avatar Daka Tuss says:

    4 stars
Chocolate flavor is rich and not too sweet. I used dark cocoa and added an extra splash of vanilla—still worked. The web effect was easier than I thought.

  64. User avatar jim.jenkins98 says:

    5 stars
Love it. I made for Halloween and everyone was impressed. 10/10 would bake again.

  65. User avatar shawna.nikolaus51 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t really get why you need the white chocolate for the web—couldn’t you just use regular frosting? But the idea is cute and it tasted fine.

  66. User avatar joey.fisher says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the spiderweb part… I just want cake. Can I skip that?

  67. User avatar art.kuvalis91 says:

    3 stars
Cake was ok, but too many ingredients if ya ask me. Just give me a box mix any day.

  68. 2 stars
The cake collapsed a bit. Not sure if I did something wrong. Templates are always deceiving.

  69. User avatar buck.haley1999 says:

    4 stars
I tried a similar recipe once and the batter was REALLY thin—still turned out okay, just be patient when pouring.

  70. User avatar luvenia.mccullough21 says:

    5 stars
This looks so fun—my kids would LOVE the spiderweb top. The batter being thin sounds scary, but if it bakes up in 30–35 minutes, I’m in!

    1. User avatar lynetta.cormier1957 says:

      5 stars
Omg yes—my niece would totally go feral for the spiderweb top 😂 I love that it bakes up in under 40 min too!

    2. 4 stars
Thin batter doesn’t sound scary to me—it sounds like you’re making it extra fudgy. Boiling water is key though… I’ve been burned by skipping that part 😅

  71. User avatar jerome.kshlerin74 says:

    4 stars
Decent chocolate cake, but mine domed a lot and the web lines kinda sank. Still tasted great—maybe I should level the layers next time.

  72. 3 stars
It tastes good but was wayyyyy too sweet for my liking. Next time, I’ll reduce the sugar.

  73. 1 star
why would u use boiling water?? this sounds impossible, no way it works!

    1. 5 stars
Boiling water is actually common in cake recipes! It helps dissolve the cocoa and makes the cake super moist. Give it a try!

  74. 3 stars
Spiderwebs?! This is just a cake. But it looks cute! I might try it.

  75. User avatar lawrence.graham1 says:

    2 stars
I tried the toothpick thing and it dragged through the icing too much. I think I overfilled the spiral. Maybe let it set 5 minutes first?

  76. User avatar wellRespected says:

    4 stars
This looks kinda complicated. I’m not sure my baking skills are good enough for this. Anyone tried making it without boiling water?

  77. User avatar maurice.moen says:

    4 stars
This recipe is simple but it’s not forgiving. If your eggs/milk aren’t room temp the batter gets weird. Learned that the hard way.

  78. 5 stars
I was skeptical about the boiling water part, but wow. The cake is super chocolatey and the texture is nice. Spiderweb top is a little fiddly, but it’s worth it.

  79. User avatar Paul "Muad'Dib" "Usul" Atreides says:

    2 stars
It’s cute but kinda chaotic—like why boiling water? Also I forgot to cool before piping and now it looks like a spilled web lol.

    1. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

      5 stars
Hah I get you 😅 The boiling water makes it *super* thin, but it helps bloom the cocoa and keeps it really moist. Also yeah—cooling before piping is key. A spilled web is still very on-theme though 😂

  80. 2 stars
Okay but why boiling water? That can’t be right—doesn’t it mess up the eggs?

  81. User avatar lydia.kunze20 says:

    2 stars
Isn’t chocolate on chocolate too much? Lol. I like simple cakes, not these fancy ones.

  82. User avatar jose.wisozk1998 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, my cake was a bit dry after cutting into it the next day. Could be I baked it too long or my oven runs hot.

  83. User avatar antione.bayer41 says:

    4 stars
So easy to make! I’m no baker, and even I nailed it. Thanks for this recipe!

    1. User avatar Garlic Jr says:

      5 stars
I’m impressed! This does seem like an easy recipe. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  84. User avatar jeanine.legros68 says:

    3 stars
Sounds good, but is it hard to make? I don’t bake much. I just want to impress my friends.

    1. 5 stars
It’s actually not that hard! Just follow the steps and you’ll be fine. Your friends will be impressed for sure!

  85. User avatar Henry Marvin MD says:

    5 stars
This cake is absolutely delicious! Easy to make and looks impressive too! My kids loved it! 🍰

  86. 2 stars
Easy recipe but I messed up the spiderweb. Didn’t know white chocolate would melt so fast!

    1. User avatar Death Hound says:

      3 stars
You melted the white chocolate too fast? It shouldn’t be that quick. You gotta be careful with the heat! Just try again, you’ll nail it! 😁

    2. 4 stars
Don’t worry! The spiderweb can be tricky. I had the same problem at first, but practice makes perfect. 😄

  87. 5 stars
Made it for a Halloween party and got compliments all night. Cocoa flavor is rich and the texture is pretty tender. I did bake 2-3 minutes longer though.

  88. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t love cocoa + sugar this much. It came out very sweet and dark, almost like a brownie cake. If you like that, you’ll be happy.

  89. 3 stars
I used dark chocolate cocoa and it was kinda bitter. Next time I’ll maybe cut the cocoa slightly or add a sweeter icing. Web looked cool regardless.

  90. User avatar Wendie Kshlerin says:

    1 star
I followed the instructions step by step but my cake looked nothing like the photo. Disappointed.

  91. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    2 stars
I think 2 cups granulated sugar sounds like a lot? Mine came out sweeter than I expected, and the cocoa taste was a bit lost. Spiderweb looks cute, but I’d reduce sugar next time.

    1. 4 stars
I’m surprised it came out that sweet—mine tastes pretty balanced with the baking soda/baking powder. Spiderweb design is the best part though. Did you measure sugar by volume or weigh it? (Spoons can pack!)

    2. User avatar candelaria.gutmann15 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—2 cups sugar is a lot for 3/4 cup cocoa. I made it once and it was almost too sweet, like dessert-overkill 😅. Next time I’m cutting down to 1 1/2 cups and using a deeper cocoa powder.

  92. 5 stars
This sounds dangerously good 😄 The batter being thin didn’t bother me—cake turned out super moist. The spiderweb top is a fun touch too!

Right?! That thin batter thing scared me at first, but the texture is always so moist. Spiderweb top looks fancy too 😄

Okay this is adorable 😭 The spiderweb effect is super creative. I love that the batter is thin—makes it feel like it’ll come out extra fudgy.

I had a hard time with the icing part. It didn’t turn out like the picture. Can someone explain how to make the spiderweb?

Ahh that happens sometimes—30-35 min can be a bit over for some ovens. Next time I’d start checking around 28-30 and pull it the moment the toothpick is *just* clean. Also thin batter can dry out if it bakes too long.

Spiderweb clumpy makes sense if the white chocolate wasn’t fully melted/smooth or the piping bag had tiny bits. I usually microwave it in short bursts and stir really well before piping.

This looks so fun and dramatic—my kids would love the spiderweb top. The batter being thin honestly made me nervous, but it baked up great.

I tried this but was really confused by the boiling water part. It made my batter super runny. Maybe I did it wrong?
