Shepard Pie

August 16, 2024

There’s nothing quite like a warm, hearty plate of shepherd’s pie to satisfy the soul. This comforting dish has been a staple in homes for generations, offering layers of savory goodness that make it perfect for cozy dinners or feeding a crowd. With its rich filling of tender meat, vegetables, and mashed potatoes, shepherd’s pie is the epitome of comfort food at its finest.

At its core, shepherd’s pie is a simple dish made with a ground meat filling, traditionally lamb (although beef is often used), cooked with vegetables like carrots, peas, and onions, and then topped with a generous layer of mashed potatoes. The filling is simmered with herbs, a bit of broth, and seasonings to create a flavorful base that complements the creamy mashed potatoes on top. Once everything is assembled, the pie is baked until golden and bubbling, with the mashed potatoes turning slightly crispy at the edges.

What makes shepherd’s pie such a comforting meal is the balance of textures and flavors. The meat and vegetable filling is hearty and satisfying, while the mashed potatoes add a creamy, smooth contrast. The top gets golden and slightly crisp as it bakes, providing that perfect crunchy bite alongside the soft, flavorful filling beneath.

Shepherd’s pie is incredibly versatile and can be easily customized. You can swap out the traditional lamb for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. Add extra vegetables like corn, parsnips, or mushrooms for additional flavor and texture. The mashed potatoes can be made with different cheeses, garlic, or even cream cheese for an extra indulgent topping.

This dish is perfect for a family dinner or a casual gathering, as it’s easy to prepare and can be made in advance. Whether you’re using leftovers or starting fresh, shepherd’s pie is always a crowd-pleaser. It’s filling, comforting, and warm, a dish that brings people together around the table.

With its rich history and timeless appeal, shepherd’s pie is a meal that’s both simple and satisfying, perfect for any occasion.

I dunno… It seems too simple to be good. I might try it, but not expecting much.

Sometimes simple is the best! Give it a try, you might be surprised. 😊

Best recipe I found for shepherd pie! Garlic bread on side makes it perfect.

This was awesome! So easy to make and sooo tasty! Will definitely make it again. 😍

Made this last night! Good comfort food. Nothing fancy but hit the spot.

  6. User avatar allan.batz20 says:

    2 stars
Just 10 mins in the oven? That sounds too short! I worry it won’t cook right.

  7. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    2 stars
Shepard pie is traditionally made with lamb, not hamburger! Just saying. 😛

  8. User avatar benito.stark says:

    3 stars
Easy but bland. I think it needs some spices or something. Maybe garlic?

  9. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    1 star
Wasnt very good. The cheese didn’t melt right and it was too soggy. I don’t recommend.

  10. 2 stars
It’s good but kinda heavy. Like, I ate two servings and felt sleepy right after 😂 Still, the layers look nice and it smells amazing while baking.

  11. User avatar brain.kris76 says:

Best shepherd pie evr!! I used beef sausage n it was yum! Def gonna make again.

Shepherd’s pie has meat and peas, isn’t this just potatoes and hamburger?

  13. User avatar pablo.flatley78 says:

    3 stars
350°F for 30 minutes with sliced potatoes? That seems too low/short. I feel like the potatoes will still be crunchy unless they’re super thin. Maybe add time or cover it with foil.

  14. User avatar dong.gerlach says:

    1 star
Just tasted like cardboard… Not a winner for me.

  15. User avatar elroy.leffler49 says:

    4 stars
My oven runs hot and I think 30 mins was perfect. Cheese melted like a dream on top.

  16. 3 stars
My husband loved it but I thought it was bland. Next time more spices!

  17. User avatar romaine.hoppe15 says:

    3 stars
Shepherd pie is usually with lamb or at least proper mashed potatoes… this is more like a casserole. Good, but not really the same thing.

  18. User avatar claribel.altenwerth92 says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but a bit too salty for my taste. Maybe lessen the cheese?

    1. User avatar niesha.crooks38 says:

      4 stars
I totally agree! I found it salty too. Reducing the cheese could help a lot. Thanks for the tip!

  19. User avatar kaci.okuneva says:

    5 stars
I made it without adding water to soup. Came out fine! Yummy!

  20. 4 stars
Shepherd’s Pie is a real comfort meal! But is cream of mushroom the traditional way? I usually use beef broth. Just wondering! 4 stars.

    1. User avatar nathaniel.schaden2003 says:

      5 stars
I think cream of mushroom gives it a nice creaminess! But using beef broth sounds good too! Just different styles maybe? 😄

  21. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

    4 stars
This is more like a casserole than traditional shepherd’s pie, but I’m not mad. Easy weeknight dinner and the cheese top is perfect.

  22. 4 stars
The instructions are clear, but step 7 has weird HTML tags (“

”). Minor thing, but it annoyed me while cooking.

  23. User avatar cornell.wintheiser says:

    3 stars
Why is it called shepherd pie if it’s just layers of hamburger and potatoes? Still tastes good though—just a little confusing.

    1. User avatar Mr. Linette McLaughlin says:

      5 stars
I get what you mean 😅 “Shepherd’s” is kind of a fancy name for a layered meat-and-potato bake. The name is more tradition than accuracy, and the flavor is the point anyway.

  24. 4 stars
Not bad, but I found it bland. I added garlic powder, pepper, and a pinch of paprika, and then it tasted way better.

  25. User avatar Bailey Reichel says:

    3 stars
The directions say cook potatoes for 4 minutes… mine were still kinda crunchy after. Maybe my slices were thick?

    1. User avatar oralia.larson11 says:

      4 stars
I think 4 minutes is too short. I’d boil them like 10 mins first or cut them super thin. Also, don’t forget to cover—otherwise it’s dry and stays firm.

    2. User avatar katlyn.vandervort says:

      5 stars
Yeah, 4 minutes is really just a quick pre-cook—if your slices were thicker (or the potatoes were big), they’ll stay crunchy. I usually slice thinner or microwave/steam them a bit longer before layering.

  26. 4 stars
Super easy recipe! I added peas and carrots for some color. But it was a bit bland, maybe need more spices.

  27. User avatar zoila.jenkins30 says:

    3 stars
I added veggies to mine but it was still sloppyyyyyy and not as good as my mom’s!

    1. 4 stars
It’s hard to beat mom’s cooking! Maybe try baking it longer next time? It might help with the sloppiness! 😊

  28. User avatar Olene O'Keefe says:

    3 stars
Shepherd pie… but calling it that when it’s basically a layered casserole with sliced potatoes? Still delicious though lol.

  29. 5 stars
This recipe is so easy! I love how quickly I can make it. My family devoured it! 5 stars!

  30. User avatar lamont.feest says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I didn’t love the blandness. Next time I’ll add garlic/onion powder and maybe a pinch of pepper in the meat.

  31. User avatar pamula.blanda says:

    4 stars
My kids loved it! Even my picky eater had seconds! Will definitely make again.

  32. User avatar royal.dickens21 says:

    4 stars
Tasted great! But why do I have to use cream of mushroom? Can I use somethin else?

  33. 3 stars
Not really a fan of cream of mushroom, but I substituted it with tomato soup and it turned out pretty decent. Still, is this even a real shepherd’s pie?

  34. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think the potatoes need a bit more time (4 min felt short) so I had to bake a little longer. Still, the flavor was nice.

  35. User avatar kenisha.torphy says:

    3 stars
Shepherds pie? More like sloppy mess pie haha 😂. It tasted alright, but looks ain’t everything. 3 stars.

  36. User avatar bennett.swaniawski73 says:

    1 star
Not a fan. too much cream! I like a thicker shepherd’s pie.

  37. User avatar nestor.johnson says:

    4 stars
I don’t get why u would use canned soup, fresh could be better. Anyway, made it for dinner and my kids ate it all. 😅

    1. 4 stars
I agree! Fresh ingredients always taste better. But sometimes convenience wins. 🤷‍♀️

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      3 stars
Canned soup is all they had at the store! It was easy, so I don’t mind! 😬

  38. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 4 minutes for the potato slices is way too short unless they’re super thin. Mine were still a bit firm after 30 minutes in the oven, so I ended up baking longer.

  39. User avatar fidel.cummings says:

    3 stars
I think it was kinda bland. Maybe need more spices? Not a big hit at my house.

    1. User avatar lauren.johnston says:

      5 stars
I totally get what you mean! I added garlic and some paprika to mine, and it turned out so much better. Spices make a huge difference!

  40. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
Why do u put water in the soup? Seems strange.

  41. User avatar enrique.macejkovic says:

    5 stars
Came out great! Kinda feels like a warm hug in a bowl ❤️

  42. User avatar susan.murazik2014 says:

    2 stars
350°F for 30 minutes felt short for me—my potatoes weren’t fully tender. Next time I’ll bake longer or slice thinner.

  43. User avatar leticia.hyatt says:

    4 stars
Wow, this brought back memories of my grandma’s cooking! A little slice of childhood.

    1. User avatar russel.mertz98 says:

      2 stars
Shepherd’s pie is supposed to have lamb, not hamburger! This ain’t right.

    2. User avatar kirby.bergstrom55 says:

      5 stars
Awww, that sounds lovely! Reminds me of my mom’s kitchen too. Can’t wait to try it out!

  44. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

    4 stars
Yum! was perfect after a long day. I might add some veggies next time tho.

  45. User avatar velvet.conn says:

    5 stars
Classic comfort food. I added a little garlic powder and pepper to the meat and it bumped the flavor a lot.

  46. User avatar annamae.mueller1988 says:

    2 stars
I think this is not real Shepherd’s Pie since it doesn’t have lamb.

  47. 5 stars
Yum! This was super tasty! I added some veggies too. Who knew shepherd’s pie could be so good? 5!

  48. User avatar lezlie.grady7 says:

    5 stars
This was so easy to make and my kids loved it! I added some mixed veggies too.

  49. User avatar dagmar.wilderman says:

    3 stars
Yummy! But what’s with the half water? Has to be more cream! Need full flavor.

    1. User avatar valeri.witting1957 says:

      4 stars
I kinda get what you mean, but I think the water helps balance the flavors. Cream’s nice, but too much can be heavy!

  50. User avatar selena.feil says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all! I like that it’s simple and uses pantry stuff. I did add a little garlic and pepper because it felt like it needed a kick.

  51. User avatar doloris.thiel2024 says:

    3 stars
It was just ok. A bit bland. I added some spices, and it was better.

  52. User avatar alfred.carter says:

    5 stars
Made this last night and it came out so comforting. I used ground turkey instead of beef and it still tasted great. Definitely a repeat meal in our house.

    1. User avatar edwardo.trantow45 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—shepherd pie comfort food is hard to beat. Ground turkey sounds like a smart swap, I bet it makes it a bit lighter but still super cozy. I’m glad it’s a repeat in your house!

  53. User avatar winfred.christiansen21 says:

    3 stars
Shepard pie? More like cheater pie! But hey, it was edible, so I give it a 3.

  54. User avatar morton.metz60 says:

    2 stars
You forgot to say how to season the meat! Mine was a bit bland. I added garlic and pepper.

  55. 5 stars
Cheese on top = yes. Super simple. Would make again!

  56. User avatar hang.shanahan says:

    4 stars
I tried this with turkey instead of beef, turned out great! Who knew healthier could be tasty!

  57. 4 stars
Yummy! But i think u forgot to say how many potatoes to use. I just winged it.

  58. 3 stars
Too many potatoes for me. Maybe add some veggies next time?

  59. User avatar carson.kirlin11 says:

    4 stars
The instructions are kinda vague (like how thick the potato slices should be). But once I adjusted the time, it came out great. Cream of mushroom works magic.

  60. 2 stars
350°F for 30 minutes seems short for a full bake. I think it needs more time to properly heat through, especially with the layers.

  61. User avatar malena.goyette1979 says:

    3 stars
Honestly? 350°F for 30 min and raw-ish potatoes sounds suspicious 😅. I tried it anyway and it turned out edible but not perfect. I would parboil longer or slice thinner.

  62. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

    3 stars
lol the directions is kinda confusing w/ the second potato layer—like do we cook potatoes more? anyway i tried and it came out ok. Thank you i guess

    1. 5 stars
Yeah I get what you mean—steps 2 and 7 make it feel like you’re supposed to cook the potatoes again. But you’re only cooking them that 4 minutes first, then layering them; the rest cooks in the oven with the meat/sauce. Glad it came out ok for you though!

  63. User avatar letha.price40 says:

    2 stars
Too bland for me. The cream of mushroom is fine, but I needed more seasoning—salt, pepper, maybe some onion powder. Also 350°F is a long bake if your pan is deep.

    1. User avatar tonette.bergnaum says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—350°F for that long can dry it out if the pan’s deep. I usually bump the seasoning right into the meat too (garlic powder/onion powder, pepper, and a little extra salt). Also try more liquid if the layers are thick.

    2. User avatar leesa.lehner1987 says:

      3 stars
I dunno, I made it once and it seemed fine to me 🤷‍♂️. I did add some extra pepper though. Deep pan means it’ll take longer, but 30 minutes at 350 still feels about right if your potatoes are already kinda pre-cooked.

  64. User avatar zachary.conroy9 says:

    5 stars
Comfort food at its finest. I used a little extra cheese and it came out bubbling and super filling. 10/10 for a weeknight dinner!

  65. User avatar britt.green says:

    5 stars
My whole family ate it so fast I barely got a plate. I used sausage and it tasted amazing.

  66. 4 stars
I added veggies in the layers, turned out great! Thanks for the idea!

  67. User avatar clayton.brown87 says:

    4 stars
This is a solid ‘use-what-you-have’ meal. I used frozen potatoes once and it turned out okay, not restaurant but good for family nights.

  68. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    2 stars
Sliced potatoes? Really? Isn’t it supposed to be mashed? I guess I’ll try this anyway but I got my doubts.

    1. User avatar I. D. Clair says:

      4 stars
I think it sounds interesting! I never thought about using sliced potatoes. Might add a nice texture! 🍽️

    2. User avatar sofia.williamson says:

      2 stars
Mashed potatoes are way better for this! Sliced seems odd to me. But hey, who knows? Maybe it will surprise us.

  69. 2 stars
    I don’t see how this is shepherd’s pie. Where’s the lamb? 🤔

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      2 stars
This ain’t shepard pie! Where’s the lamb? Y’all just making up names for dishes now! 😠

    2. 4 stars
It’s definitely not traditional shepherd’s pie, but it sounds tasty! I mean, who doesn’t love cheese? 🧀

  70. User avatar elois.kuhlman67 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… seems kinda soggy with all that soup?

  71. User avatar tanner.labadie35 says:

    4 stars
Shepard? I’m guessing you meant Shepherd pie 😅 but the idea works. The cream of mushroom + cheese combo is classic and hits the spot.

  72. User avatar kathrine.prosacco24 says:

    5 stars
My family loved it! I doubled the cheese and it got nice and bubbly on top. Also draining the fat from the hamburger is key—otherwise it gets greasy.

  73. 3 stars
Made it with turkey instead of hamburger, it was okay but weird texture.

  74. User avatar wenona.kub60 says:

    3 stars
Tried it, but it was a bit too mushy for my taste. Maybe cook potatoes longer? idk

    1. 3 stars
Mushy? Hmm, my grandma always said potatoes need to be a lil softer for pies. Just sayin’ 🤷‍♂️.

    2. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue! I think the potatoes need more time to cook or maybe consider steaming them first. More flavor! 😅

  75. User avatar yuonne.steuber says:

    5 stars
This was so easy to make! The kids loved it! Definitely a keeper!

  76. User avatar hortencia.beahan says:

    3 stars
Could use some veggies tho. My mom woulda put peas and carrots in it.

  77. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    2 stars
Isn’t shepherd’s pie suppose to have peas? This recipe doesn’t have any! Seems off.

  78. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about the potatoes—like, raw sliced potatoes + only 30 minutes? But honestly the layers came out tender. Weirdly satisfying.

  79. User avatar Ms. Jayna Schaden says:

    5 stars
Wow! My kids asked for seconds and that almost never happens. I think the cheese on top was the best part.

  80. User avatar kathrine.mohr1982 says:

    5 stars
So easy. Five stars from me.

  81. User avatar lewis.watsica2009 says:

    4 stars
Never made it before. Seemed complicated but I nailed it! Thanks for sharing.

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      2 stars
Honestly, it doesn’t look that hard but my kitchen skills are sad. Maybe I’ll try it but not holding my breath.

    2. User avatar lynetta.johnston28 says:

      5 stars
Great job! I’m so glad you nailed it! Shepard’s pie is one of my favorites. What did you think of the flavor?

  82. User avatar jay.langworth42 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, draining the fat is key. I tried skipping it once and it got greasy. Also I added a pinch of garlic powder—highly recommend.

    1. User avatar gregorio.dooley34 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Draining the fat makes such a difference—greasy shepherd’s pie is the worst. I’ve done the garlic powder thing too and it really boosts it. 🙌

  83. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
I used sausage instead of hamburger and wow—way richer. Also, I skipped the second potato layer because I was hungry, and it still turned out great.

  84. User avatar easter.bernier24 says:

    5 stars
This was super easy to make! My family loved it, I added some veggies tho.

  85. 5 stars
Yum yum! Super cheesy and delicious! Makin it again!

    1. User avatar chong.cronin49 says:

      3 stars
Isn’t shepherd’s pie supposed to have lamb? This recipe seems off. 🤔

    2. User avatar Tonia King says:

      5 stars
Sounds amazing! I love cheesy dishes. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  86. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    2 stars
Meh. I followed it exactly and it tasted bland. Maybe my cheese didn’t melt right? I don’t know… could use more seasoning.

  87. User avatar dorian.shields66 says:

    5 stars
I used sausage and it was way better than plain hamburger. More flavor and it held together nicely.

    1. User avatar cyrus.hayes60 says:

      5 stars
Yes! Sausage makes it way more flavorful. I’m glad it held together too—plain burger can get a little dry/crumbly sometimes.

  88. User avatar rolland.ebert says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t get the layering thing. I just mixed everything and baked it and it was basically the same. Still, easy recipe.

  89. 3 stars
Recipe OK, but I think it needs more seasoning. Just tastes like meat and potatoes, kinda bland. 3 stars.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree with you! More seasoning would definitely elevate this dish. Try adding some garlic powder or Italian herbs next time!

  90. User avatar emmanuel.waelchi49 says:

    1 star
What’s Shepherd Pie? I thought it was made with lamb? 🤔

  91. User avatar tod.macejkovic says:

    2 stars
Honestly, it was just okay. I’ve had better deli shepherd pies. This is kinda basic.

  92. User avatar lucien.tremblay says:

    3 stars
Not enough detail on cooking the potatoes! Mine were a little undercooked. 😕

  93. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

    3 stars
I used chicken instead of hamburger and it turned out alright, but I feel like it’s not the same.

  94. 3 stars
Shepard’s pie isn’t supposed to have cream of mushroom! You should use gravy.

  95. User avatar Ms. Amalia Wuckert says:

    4 stars
Can I use chicken instead of hamburger? Asking for a friend!

  96. 5 stars
Wow this is easier than I thought, will vote 5 just for that!!

    1. User avatar shaun.kling1964 says:

      5 stars
I can’t believe how simple it is too! Love it!

  97. User avatar riva.schuppe2006 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, draining the potatoes after only 4 minutes feels a little undercooked… but it still turned out fine, just needed a little longer in my oven.

  98. User avatar Ramallo says:

    5 stars
Very good! I’m not a cook but this one was nice and simple.

  99. User avatar jeremy.borer2 says:

    5 stars
This was super easy to make and my kids loved it! Definitely a keeper!

  100. User avatar milagros.lockman95 says:

    4 stars
So yum! This was my first time cooking and it turned out great. Thanks for the easy steps!

  101. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
I don’t think using cream of mushroom is the right way to go. Real cooked mushrooms would be better.

  102. 5 stars
Yum yum yum!!! Perfect comfort food 😋. Thank you for sharing!

  103. User avatar carrie.blick76 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about the cream of mushroom, I think it’s kinda gross. Can I use something else?

  104. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

    2 stars
I don’t think this is a real shepherd’s pie. Where’s the lamb? Disappointed.

  105. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe! My kids loved it. Will make again!

  106. User avatar illa.hauck says:

Not really a shepherd’s pie, more like a casserole. Where’s the peas and carrots? Disappointed.

  107. User avatar Super Saiyan Blue Goku says:

    5 stars
This shepherd’s pie was a hit with my family! So easy to make and delicious! Will def make again!

  108. 2 stars
I didn’t drain the fat as well as I should’ve… wow that made the bottom a little greasy. Flavor was still good though. Lesson learned.

  109. 5 stars
Cheese on top = yes. Simple comfort food. Will make again.

  110. 5 stars
Honestly, this is super comforting. The creamy mushroom + cheese combo is exactly what I want in a shepherd pie.

    1. User avatar hermelinda.wunsch44 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That mushroom + cheese vibe is seriously the best part. I make it pretty much the same—so good on a cold night.

    2. User avatar benjamin.adams86 says:

      3 stars
I get the comfort, but shepherd pie is usually more like meat + gravy under mash… not sure about the potato slices tho. Still sounds tasty, ngl.

  111. 5 stars
This looks delicious! Can’t wait to try it.

    1. User avatar jeffry.hilpert1982 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This recipe is a classic, can’t wait to dig in!

  112. 5 stars
This shepard pie is sooo good! I added some peas and carrots for extra flavor. 5 stars!

    1. User avatar Drew Greenfelder says:

      5 stars
I love adding extra veggies too! Peas and carrots really make it pop! 🍽️

  113. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
Forgot the cheese, lol. Still really tasty!

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

      3 stars
Who needs cheese anyway? I think it sounds good as it is! Less calories, right?

    2. User avatar hai.koss96 says:

      4 stars
Haha, good to know it still turned out well even without cheese! Maybe try adding some next time for extra flavor?

  114. 5 stars
Pretty good! I used fresh mushrooms instead of cream of mushroom. Yummy!

  115. User avatar reed.gorczany86 says:

    2 stars
Honestly I don’t get it. It tastes like cafeteria food to me. Also 350°F for 30 mins wasn’t enough—my potatoes were still firm.

  116. User avatar Ms. Nilda Schaden says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it tasted kinda bland. Could be the cream of mushroom soup brand? Added salt, pepper, and a dash of Worcestershire afterward and it helped a lot.

  117. User avatar Ra'zhinda says:

    4 stars
I used sausage instead of hamburger and it was way better than I expected. Didn’t drain all the fat (oops), but it still tasted good.

  118. User avatar max.cremin says:

    3 stars
I followed it mostly and it came out kinda watery. I think I didn’t drain the hamburger enough or my soup + water ratio was off. Still edible though!

    1. User avatar wilhemina.swift says:

      5 stars
That sounds like the ratio issue—watery shepherd’s pie is usually too much liquid or not enough reduction. Draining the meat helps a lot, but also make sure you’re really using about half a can of water with the soup (or use less next time). Next bake, I’d try cooking it 5–10 minutes longer to let it thicken, and/or add a little more cheese on top.

  119. 1 star
    Soggy. 🙁

  120. User avatar jesse.turcotte14 says:

    5 stars
Can’t go wrong with cheese! This dish has my heart 💖.

    1. 2 stars
I don’t know, cream of mushroom isn’t that great… is there a way to skip that part?

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree! Cheese makes everything better! 🧀💖

  121. 1 star
Shepherd’s pie? More like a layer of mush. 🤔 Not my favorite dish.

    1. 3 stars
Nah, this dish is classic! You just gotta make it right, with good ingredients. Don’t knock it till you try! 😂

    2. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      4 stars
Maybe you just need to try a different recipe? I’ve had some really good shepherd’s pies that are not mushy at all! 😋

  122. User avatar athena.kunze43 says:

    4 stars
Shepard pie is spelled wrong, it’s shepherd. But whatever, it still looks good!

  123. User avatar trula.herzog82 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is sooo easy and delicious! My family loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad your family loved it! This recipe is definitely a crowd-pleaser. 😍

    2. 3 stars
It looks good, but I’m skeptical about using cream of mushroom. Can’t we make it healthier? 🤔

  124. User avatar jerry.vandervort84 says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—so comforting. I used turkey sausage and it still tasted great. The mushroom soup + cheese combo is a winner.

    1. 5 stars
Love hearing that! Turkey sausage is a great swap—less fatty and still flavorful. That mushroom soup + cheese combo really does make it super comforting.

  125. User avatar scotty.bode26 says:

    2 stars
I tried it but forgot to add the water to the soup mix and it turned out too thick. Still edible, just not creamy.

  126. 4 stars
This is more like a casserole than shepherd pie lol but I ain’t mad. I didn’t even have cream of mushroom so I used cream of chicken and it was fine. Would make again.

    1. User avatar garth.klein66 says:

      5 stars
Haha yeah it’s definitely casserole vibes—still tastes great though. And good call on using cream of chicken! I’ve done that too when I’m out of cream of mushroom. Next time I might add a little extra seasoning or some veggies, but making again makes perfect sense.

  127. User avatar gabriel.stiedemann12 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is easy and delicious! My family loved it!

  128. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

    4 stars
Made it tonight—easy enough for a weeknight. One note: I used mashed potatoes instead of slices and it still worked great. 350°F for 30 min felt about right for my oven.

  129. 4 stars
Yum! Can’t wait to try this with my family. 😍

  130. User avatar verline.bechtelar says:

    5 stars
Wow! This shepherd pie was so good! My fam loved it, thanks for sharing!

Right? Cheese makes everything better! Can’t wait to try this recipe out! 😍

  132. User avatar teodoro.streich2000 says:

    3 stars
This recipe is easy but I don’t have cream of mushroom… can I use tomato sauce?

  133. 3 stars
I burned mine…oops! But still was edible. Ha, I guess that’s a win?

  134. User avatar brant.kovacek says:

    5 stars
Yum!! Cheese on top is life! 😍🥴

    1. User avatar russel.bernhard1981 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! Cheese makes everything better ❤️🧀

    2. User avatar Ms. Mickey Zieme says:

      3 stars
I dunno, cheese on the shepard pie? Is that really a thing? 🤔

  135. 2 stars
I didn’t drain enough fat from the meat and it came out greasy. Next time I’m draining longer, no excuses 😅

    1. User avatar octavio.hayes26 says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—draining properly makes a huge difference. I usually blot the meat in the pan with paper towels too, just to be safe. No shame in fixing it 😅

  136. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think 4 minutes for the potato slices is too short. Mine were a little firm even after baking, so next time I’ll par-cook longer or slice thinner.

    1. User avatar zachariah.leuschke says:

      4 stars
Hm I didn’t have that issue? Maybe my slices were thinner, but I think 4 min is enough if you cover and keep things moist w/ the soup. I’m gonna try 6 min next time though.

    2. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—4 minutes sounds like it’d leave them firm. I usually par-cook longer or slice thinner so they bake through nicely. Great call!

  137. User avatar tod.roberts2017 says:

    3 stars
Not bad but my husband said it was too creamy. Will try without the water next time.

  138. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    2 stars
ugh. I burnt it… Can someone help me? Why I even try this?!

  139. User avatar lawerence.hackett26 says:

    2 stars
The instructions say half a can of water… I eyeballed it and now I’m wondering if I ruined it lol. It was still tasty, just not thick enough for my liking.

    1. User avatar almeda.cronin68 says:

      4 stars
If it was still tasty, you’re probably fine 😄 Thickness is mostly the soup/water balance—next time try a bit less water (or simmer uncovered a few extra minutes) to get it thicker.

  140. 2 stars
I’m skeptical about the cream of mushroom soup being the main flavor. Tastes kinda salty to me, but adding garlic/onion powder helped. Still, it’s not the worst.

  141. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, the steps are a little messy (like the HTML tag in the middle lol). But the recipe itself works. I used leftover mashed potatoes instead of slices and it was still great.

    1. User avatar thomas.becker says:

      3 stars
I tried it too but i used instant potatoes so it didnt lay right… maybe i should slice next time? Still tastes ok.

    2. User avatar Oliver Miller says:

      4 stars
Yeah that HTML tag in step 7 is definitely… not food-related 😅 Glad it still turned out good though!

  142. 3 stars
I followed it, but the whole thing tasted a little bland to me. Next time I’ll season the meat (garlic powder/onion powder) and add some black pepper. Still, not bad at all.

  143. User avatar len.auer1991 says:

    3 stars
I made it but forgot to drain the potatoes… it was a soggy mess but tasted ok.

  144. 5 stars
I made this with ground sausage and it came out super comforting. The cream of mushroom + cheese combo is doing the heavy lifting—in a good way. Next time I’ll add a little onion/garlic to the meat.

    1. 3 stars
I like the idea but 350°F for 30 min feels a bit short for potatoes, lol. I usually boil them longer or bake it more so it’s not watery. Still, draining the fat is smart.

    2. User avatar gregg.pagac says:

      5 stars
That sounds perfect—cream of mushroom + cheese is basically the cheat code. I’ve done it with sausage too and it’s so comforting. Onion/garlic would totally level it up 👌

  145. 4 stars
Pretty tasty, but 4 minutes for the potatoes feels a little short unless they’re super thin. I ended up baking a few extra minutes so they’d actually soften.

    1. 4 stars
I think 4 minutes is enough? Mine came out fine, but I also used kinda small potato slices. Maybe oven temp matters too. If it’s still hard, just bake longer like you did.

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—4 minutes seems rushed for sliced potatoes unless they’re paper-thin. I usually par-cook longer too so they’re actually tender by the time it’s done.

  146. 5 stars
Made this for dinner last week—so comforting. I used lean ground turkey and it still tasted great. The cream of mushroom + cheese combo is a winner.

  147. User avatar porfirio.kub2023 says:

    5 stars
This is comfort food perfection. The mushroom soup layer makes it super rich, and the cheese on top is the right move. I’ll definitely make it again.

  148. User avatar dannielle.kreiger88 says:

    4 stars
Not “shepherd’s pie” to me without actual mashed potatoes, lol. But it’s still good—just call it layered meat and potato casserole.

  149. User avatar darell.koss23 says:

    2 stars
I didn’t drain the fat (oops) and it came out kinda greasy. Food was still edible but yeah, drain it like the recipe says.

    1. User avatar toccara.gislason2002 says:

      5 stars
Ugh, been there 😅 but you’re right—draining the fat really makes a difference. Next time I’ll definitely drain it.

  150. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
The cream of mushroom soup step is fine, but I hate how salty it can get. I mixed mine with a little extra water and it was way better.

  151. User avatar hester.king2001 says:

    3 stars
    Meh. It’s just a mix of stuff. Didn’t impress me, sorry… 3.

  152. User avatar ruben.farrell11 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid, but I’d suggest baking a bit longer than 30 minutes if your potatoes are thick. Mine were a little firm, but the flavor was awesome once the cheese melted.

    1. User avatar danelle.barrows87 says:

      3 stars
Mine got a lil dry at 30 min lol. I think I shoulda boiled the potatoes more? Still tastes good tho, cheese saved it.

    2. 5 stars
Yeah I agree—30 mins was nowhere near enough for my thick slices. I ended up doing closer to 40 and everything came out much softer. Great tip!

  153. User avatar tora.reynolds25 says:

    3 stars
The recipe says “sliced potatoes” like they’ll magically cook in half an hour. I had to cook mine longer in the oven with foil.

  154. User avatar rhett.steuber says:

    2 stars
I tried this but it didn’t turn out right. My potatoes were too soggy and the cheese wouldn’t melt. Not a fan. 2/5.

  155. User avatar Trina Corder says:

    3 stars
Looks good but I question that cream of mushroom. Can’t you just use real mushrooms? Seems kinda lazy.

  156. 5 stars
This was super comforting. The cream of mushroom + cheese combo is exactly what I wanted, and 350°F for 30 min worked great for me.

  157. User avatar stanton.muller91 says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and somehow it came out watery. I used regular cream of mushroom and didn’t measure the water carefully, so maybe that was the problem? Still edible though.

  158. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

    3 stars
Pretty easy, but 4 minutes for potatoes feels kinda short unless they’re paper-thin. Mine were slightly firm after 30 min.

    1. User avatar dorathy.harber1951 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I agree—4 minutes only works if they’re *really* thin. If they’re even a bit thicker, I do closer to 8–10 minutes (or parboil longer) so they’re tender after baking.

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      4 stars
Maybe you should boil the potatoes first? I never do the 4 min thing, because mine still be hard at 30 mins. Also 30 mins in the oven feels low to me.

  159. User avatar curtis.friesen31 says:

    2 stars
Super easy to follow but mine came out a bit soggy :(. I probably did something wrong. 2 stars.

  160. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the cream of mushroom but it actually worked well! I thought it might taste weird but it was delicious. 4 stars!

  161. User avatar darrin.hudson2003 says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty closely but the potatoes were a little firm after 30 minutes. Next time I’ll parboil longer or bake a bit more.

  162. User avatar Super Saiyan Goku says:

    3 stars
I think the potatoes need more than 4 minutes. Mine were crunchy in the middle after baking. Next time I’ll parboil them longer or slice thinner.

  163. User avatar caron.mueller55 says:

    5 stars
Made this last night and it’s seriously comforting. Draining the fat makes a big difference—no greasy sadness. I used cheddar and it melted perfectly after the second bake.

  164. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid for a quick “shepherd pie” vibe. Though 4 minutes for the potato slices feels a tad short—mine weren’t fully tender after 30 min, so I’d par-cook a bit longer or slice thinner.

  165. User avatar lamont.tremblay1994 says:

    5 stars
This is the best shepherd’s pie I’ve ever made! So easy and delicious!

  166. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

    5 stars
Comfort food goals. The cream of mushroom + cheese combo is exactly what I want on a cold night. I added a pinch of garlic powder too—came out perfect.

  167. User avatar Romelia Bashirian says:

    4 stars
This tastes like the childhood version of dinner. Very hands-off too—just layer and bake.

  168. 4 stars
I didn’t drain enough fat once and it came out greasy. Learned my lesson 😅 Drain the hamburger for real.

    1. User avatar karima.jacobi45 says:

      5 stars
Yep, draining is huge—greasy mince will totally ruin it 😅 I usually press it in the pan with a spoon and then drain one more time just to be safe.

  169. User avatar Timothy Gaylord says:

    3 stars
Super easy, but I think 4 minutes for the potatoes is a bit short—mine were still a little firm after 30 minutes. Next time I’ll parboil longer or thinly slice them.

  170. 5 stars
Simple and cheap, love it. The cream of mushroom keeps everything moist without extra work. Great weeknight meal.

  171. User avatar nanci.homenick1984 says:

    4 stars
    Nice!

    1. User avatar Emilee Reichert says:

      4 stars
Haha nice. I always forget to drain stuff though 😅 Does the cream of mushroom make it watery or pretty thick?

    2. User avatar cleveland.schaden21 says:

      5 stars
Thanks! I like that it’s pretty straightforward—draining the fat and layering makes a big difference.

  172. User avatar cody.blick41 says:

    3 stars
I used mozzarella instead of cheddar and it melted fine. Would maybe add a pinch of salt to the soup mix because mine was bland.

  173. User avatar fallon.bruen2000 says:

    4 stars
350°F for 30 minutes didn’t brown the top at all for me. I broiled it for like 2 minutes and it was perfect after that.

  174. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

    1 star
Just use ground beef, don’t need that sausage nonsense. Who puts sausage in shepherd pie? 1 star.

  175. 3 stars
Not bad, but the instructions are kinda vague. Like how much hamburger? How thick are the potato slices? I eyeballed it and it was… okay.

    1. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

      3 stars
Kinda disagree. I think it’s flexible—Shepherd’s pie isn’t exactly science, right? I did it by feel and it turned out fine. The 4 minutes for potatoes seems short, but you can just bake a little longer if they’re not soft.

    2. User avatar katie.murazik16 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I get that—“hamburger or sausage” + “potatoes sliced” is pretty vague 😅 I usually go with 1 lb ground meat and slice the potatoes about 1/8 inch thick so they cook through. Still tastes great though.

  176. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Good cheap meal. I added some frozen peas and it made it feel more complete. My kids ate it without complaining, so that says something.

  177. User avatar debbie.lueilwitz says:

    5 stars
Made this last night and it actually felt like real comfort food. I used ground turkey instead of hamburger and it still worked great. The mushroom soup + cheese combo is such a classic.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! Ground turkey is a great swap—still gets that cozy vibe without being as heavy. And you’re totally right about the mushroom soup + cheese combo. Classic comfort food magic 😄

  178. 5 stars
Loved the layering idea—nice and hearty. I used sausage and it gave it way more flavor than hamburger. Definitely adding this to my rotation.
