Homemade Basil Pesto

March 14, 2025

Homemade basil pesto is one of those magical recipes that instantly transforms a simple dish into something special. With its vibrant green color, bold herbal aroma, and rich, garlicky taste, this Italian classic captures the essence of summer in every spoonful. Made from fresh basil leaves, olive oil, garlic, pine nuts, and Parmesan cheese, pesto is both versatile and deeply satisfying. While store-bought versions can be convenient, there’s nothing quite like the flavor of pesto made fresh at home.

The star of this sauce is basil, whose bright, peppery flavor sets the tone. When blended with good-quality olive oil and sharp Parmesan, the basil becomes the foundation for a sauce that is smooth yet punchy. Garlic adds depth and warmth, while pine nuts contribute a subtle nuttiness that rounds out the flavor. The result is a deeply flavorful, slightly creamy paste that tastes both rich and refreshing. It’s no wonder pesto has become a favorite beyond Italian kitchens.

One of the best things about homemade basil pesto is how many ways you can use it. Toss it with pasta for a quick dinner, spread it on sandwiches, or drizzle it over roasted vegetables. It’s also wonderful as a dip for crusty bread or as a topping for grilled chicken or fish. Even a small amount can add incredible flavor to a dish, making it a staple worth keeping in the fridge.

This sauce is also customizable. You can swap out the pine nuts for walnuts or almonds if needed, or add a squeeze of lemon juice for extra brightness. If you’re dairy-free, nutritional yeast can replace the Parmesan without sacrificing too much of the cheesy flavor. Homemade pesto stores well in the fridge for several days and can be frozen for longer storage, giving you an easy way to bring bold, herbal flavor to meals at a moment’s notice.

This pesto recipe is fantastic! I followed it exactly and it turned out perfect. The flavor is unreal. 5 stars!

  3. User avatar patrina.skiles says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I think it needs more garlic. I always use like 5 cloves. Just saying! 😅 3/5.

Why do you put nuts in pesto? Who even does that? Just give me basil!

  5. User avatar nikia.windler1980 says:

    2 stars
I had some basil in the garden and sprayed it with pesticides… guess that’s not a good idea? 😬

  6. User avatar willow.konopelski says:

    2 stars
This recipe is a scam! Pesto should have more cheese.

    1. 2 stars
Nah, more cheese makes everything better! Who even wants pesto without a cheesy flavor, right?

    2. 4 stars
I think you need to try it with the recipe as is! It’s pretty traditional, and too much cheese can overpower the freshness.

  7. User avatar jamar.damore says:

    4 stars
    yummy

  8. 5 stars
Yum!!! Made it for a summer party and it was a hit!!

  9. User avatar Random Dent says:

I used walnuts instead of pine nuts because that’s what I had—honestly, it was still excellent. If you don’t have pine nuts, don’t panic.

  10. User avatar joe_banana says:

I thought it would be more complicated, but the processor method works. Mine was a little thick, so I added another splash of olive oil and it loosened up perfectly.

  11. User avatar timothy.hamill40 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but next time I’ll use a little more garlic. Also mine was thicker than I expected—maybe I held back on the olive oil.

Absolutely! Pesto is the best! Can’t wait to try this recipe!

  13. 3 stars
Mine separated a bit after refrigeration. I think I didn’t blend long enough. Still yummy, just looked kinda weird on top of pasta.

  14. User avatar janine.stoltenberg says:

    2 stars
Uh, I think I forgot the salt. It tasted kinda bland. Maybe I needed more garlic too. Not sure I’ll try again.

  15. User avatar Xenia Mertz says:

    3 stars
Meh. Liked it but didn’t change my life or anything. Just tastes like green mush to me. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
I totally get where you’re coming from! Sometimes it just feels like another green sauce. But hey, it’s a classic for a reason! 🌿

    2. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      3 stars
Green mush? C’mon, it’s about the flavors! Pesto can seriously elevate a dish if you mix it right! 🥳

    1. User avatar bradford.cormier2001 says:

      4 stars
Sounds like you might have added too much oil. The ratio can be tricky!

  18. User avatar burton.rutherford40 says:

This pesto is a game changer! Tastes fresh and amazing on pasta.

  19. User avatar floria.hilpert says:

This pesto is a game changer! So fresh and flavorful. I used it on pasta and it was divine!

    1. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

I agree! This pesto really does elevate any dish! It’s so easy to make too. I added walnuts instead of pine nuts and it turned out great!

    2. 2 stars
Really? I found it a bit too oily. Maybe I just made it wrong. I’ll stick to store-bought next time.

  21. 2 stars
Pesto is overrated. Just a mushy green sauce. Not for me.

    1. User avatar gina.willms0 says:

      3 stars
Really? I mean, it’s just a sauce. I don’t think it’s overrated, though. Some people love it!

    2. User avatar sharla.kunze60 says:

      5 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but pesto can be sooo good if you use fresh ingredients! It’s not just mushy green sauce; it’s flavor magic!

  22. User avatar vinnie.fisher8 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t even have olive oil so I used vegetable oil, still tasted fine… weird, huh?

  23. User avatar Frost Giant says:

    3 stars
Ya, this was simple & fast but taste was kinda bland. Maybe I’ll try with more salt next time.

    1. User avatar Lumberjack says:

I thought it was delicious! Maybe you need to add more cheese to boost the flavor?

    2. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

Bland? Really? Pesto is supposed to be fresh and light! Just use better quality ingredients next time!

  24. User avatar edmund.kunde says:

Easy and honestly tastes like the jarred stuff but fresher. I used walnuts instead of pine nuts because that’s what I had—still great.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—homemade pesto is way fresher. I’ve done the same swap with walnuts when I’m out of pine nuts and it still slaps. 😋

    2. User avatar shavonne.gusikowski73 says:

      3 stars
I tried something like this but mine came out kinda bitter—maybe too much garlic? Also I didn’t toast the nuts… is that why? Still tasted good though.

  25. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    1 star
Too many ingredients to bother. I just use store-bought. Easier.

  26. User avatar rosendo.gerhold91 says:

    5 stars
This pesto is AMAZING! I added it to my pasta and it blew me away!

  27. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    4 stars
Good flavor, but I think my pesto came out a bit thick. Next time I’ll drizzle the olive oil slower and keep pulsing longer to get it smoother.

    1. User avatar clarence.gutmann says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—thick pesto usually means the oil went in too fast or the blending didn’t fully smooth it out. Slow drizzle and longer pulsing makes a big difference. I also add a splash of extra oil at the end if it’s still too thick.

  28. User avatar stuart.williamson says:

    3 stars
I dunno, it feels like there’s too much garlic in this. My breath is lethal right now! 😅

  29. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    1 star
Nah, I don’t like basil in general. No offense!

  30. User avatar chi.gleason36 says:

This pesto is fantastic! It tastes so fresh, and I love making it for pasta. Highly recommend!

  31. User avatar tashia.botsford90 says:

I just don’t get why I need so many basil leaves… Like, just throw in some basil and call it pesto! LOL

  32. User avatar lavern.williamson1953 says:

    3 stars
I love pesto but this felt a bit salty even though I used only 1/4 tsp. Maybe Parmesan brands vary a lot. Texture was nice.

  33. User avatar Spider Soldier says:

    5 stars
Pesto? Yummy! Would eat this everyday!

  34. User avatar vincenzo.hirthe says:

  35. User avatar steve_maga says:

    5 stars
This is basically an Italian miracle! I’m Italian and I approve!

  36. 4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I used walnuts because pine nuts were pricey. Still tasted great—just a bit more earthy.

  37. User avatar angie.blanda75 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I added some spinach for extra greens. 🥗

    1. User avatar chieko.wuckert1953 says:

Spinach in pesto? That’s a cool twist! I might give that a shot too. 😊

  38. User avatar mario.gerlach says:

    5 stars
Simple and delicious. I made a sandwich with it, and my family loved it! Will make again!

  39. User avatar fidela.purdy1959 says:

    3 stars
Pretty good, but I think it needs more garlic. I like my pesto strong! 🧄

  40. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it’s honestly super fresh tasting. I used a little extra basil and it blended so smooth—perfect on pasta.

  41. User avatar markita.jakubowski1998 says:

    4 stars
Is it just me or does pesto taste weird if you don’t add nuts? 🤔

  42. User avatar omer.luettgen says:

    5 stars
Loved it!!! So fresh! But I used walnuts instead of pine nuts and it still rocked!

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! Walnuts are a great substitute. I’ll have to try that next time!

  43. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    2 stars
Simple recipe but doesn’t taste as good as the store-bought ones. 🤷‍♂️

  44. 5 stars
I used fresh basil from the garden and it tasted way better than store-bought. Next time I’ll double it for sure.

  45. User avatar grisel.batz78 says:

    4 stars
This pesto is so easy but isn’t it supposed to have nuts? The pine ones are too expensive!

  46. User avatar estell.hackett40 says:

    4 stars
So easy to make! I added some lemon juice for a zesty kick and it turned out great! 😊

    1. User avatar Paul Harber Sr. says:

      5 stars
Lemon juice? That’s a clever twist! I might try that next time! 😄

  47. User avatar kayleen.hoeger2017 says:

    4 stars
Quick question: can I swap the Parmesan for Pecorino? I think it’d be better with the sharper flavor.

  48. User avatar Arnbjorn says:

    2 stars
I’m confused, why do you toast pine nuts? Are they bad if not toasted? 🤔

  49. User avatar hermine.rutherford says:

    1 star
Homemade pesto is way too complicated. Why not just buy it from the store? You gotta wash all those leaves!

  50. User avatar lenard.klein1970 says:

    2 stars
This recipe is okay, but where I come from, we use walnuts instead of pine nuts. Too fancy for my taste.

  51. 5 stars
This pesto is fantastic! I love it on pasta. Thanks for sharing!

  52. User avatar despina.orn59 says:

    4 stars
I made this for a party and everyone loved it! I added some lemon juice for a zesty kick!

    1. User avatar sharyn.skiles4 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Lemon juice sounds like a fun twist to the recipe. I’ll have to try that next time!

  53. User avatar Juliana Schneider says:

    4 stars
I wasn’t sure about making my own pesto, but this recipe is pretty easy. Turned out good, but I think I used too much oil.

  54. 5 stars
This turned out super fresh and fragrant—exactly what I wanted for my pasta night. I was worried about the pine nuts, but toasting them made a big difference.

  55. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s just blended herbs and nuts. I prefer store bought.

  56. 2 stars
How long can this be kept? I’m confused about the storage bit.

  57. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    2 stars
Pesto is ok but not crazy about it. My grandma makes a killer one though. Not sure if this one compares.

  58. 5 stars
This pesto is amazing!! I used it on pasta and my family loved it. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar jacques.windler30 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Pesto on pasta is a classic family favorite. What do you think about adding some sun-dried tomatoes next time?

  59. User avatar Snow Bear says:

    5 stars
This is the best pesto recipe I’ve ever tried! So fresh and flavorful! Definitely going to make this again.

  60. User avatar Paulita Bosco says:

    3 stars
Followed the recipe to the T, but my pesto turned out chunky. Am I doing it wrong?

  61. 3 stars
Basil is good but you should’ve added more cheese, it wasn’t cheesy enough for my liking.

    1. User avatar johnie.howe56 says:

      5 stars
More cheese is always better! I’d totally agree with you on that. I usually throw in extra just for flavor. Thanks for sharing!

    2. User avatar suzann.zulauf says:

      3 stars
I don’t know, I think it’s fine as is. Cheese can make it too salty sometimes. But I guess everyone has different tastes, right?

  62. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    3 stars
What can I substitute for pine nuts? Allergic!

  63. User avatar Linwood Heathcote says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… tasted kinda bitter? Could be my basil though?

    1. User avatar audie.beer72 says:

      4 stars
I think the bitterness could definitely come from over-processing the basil or using old leaves. Fresh basil should be sweet and fragrant!

    2. User avatar bridget.runolfsdottir16 says:

      3 stars
Bitter? Really? That’s odd! I made this recipe last week and thought it was super delicious. Maybe you added too much garlic?

  64. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

    2 stars
Why toast the pine nuts? I skipped it and honestly it was fine. Also I used regular olive oil and didn’t die, so I guess it’s forgiving.

  65. User avatar les.kozey15 says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe. I don’t have a food processor so I used a blender and it worked, but I had to stop and scrape a lot.

    1. User avatar Avery Bernier says:

      5 stars
Good tip! I also don’t have a processor and the blender can work, but scraping is totally the deal. Next time I’ll probably do it in smaller batches so it blends smoother.

  66. User avatar katy.ferry2011 says:

    2 stars
Easy recipe, but I messed up and put too much oil. Not the best result… 😅

  67. User avatar halflife4 says:

    3 stars
Uh oh, I forgot the garlic! Still turned out decent, but less flavor. 🙁

    1. User avatar jimmy.stiedemann85 says:

      4 stars
Garlic makes a big difference! But glad it still turned out okay. Maybe try adding more spices next time?

  68. User avatar donald.daniel42 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear, but I don’t have a food processor. I tried blending with a hand blender and it never got smooth, more like chunky pesto. Tasted fine, just not the texture.

    1. User avatar earlean.hettinger says:

      4 stars
Yeah that happens—without a food processor you usually won’t get that fully smooth texture. Hand blender often leaves it chunky unless you blend a long time and add the olive oil very slowly. If you have a mortar & pestle, that’ll make it smoother; otherwise try chopping the basil and garlic super fine first.

  69. 5 stars
Gotta love pesto! I’ve been using it as a dip, delish!

    1. User avatar kia.bogisich4 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, isn’t pesto just for pasta? Seems weird for dipping maybe.

    2. User avatar in.stoltenberg9 says:

      5 stars
Pesto is the best! I’ve never thought of using it as a dip tho, genius idea!

  70. 5 stars
This is the best pesto recipe I’ve ever tried! So easy and so flavorful. My pasta has never tasted better!

  71. User avatar willia.hane says:

    4 stars
Looks delicious! But can I use walnuts instead of pine nuts? Would it taste the same?

  72. 4 stars
I love how simple it is! I swapped pine nuts for walnuts, still yum!

  73. User avatar chuck.reynolds says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about only 1/4 tsp salt. I added more and it tasted way better to me. Garlic amount is perfect.

  74. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    3 stars
I found it too oily, maybe I did something wrong. I prefer a thicker texture.

  75. 1 star
I dunno about this.. is pesto supposed to taste like that? I thought it would be sweeter. 🤔

  76. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    5 stars
So good and fresh!! Make sure to use fresh ingredients, it makes a difference!

  77. User avatar clyde.cartwright70 says:

Sounds good, but ain’t pesto supposed to have walnuts? Just sayin’.

  79. User avatar lessie.barrows8 says:

    3 stars
This recipe is good but seems kinda old-fashioned. I usually buy store-bought.

  80. 4 stars
Quick and easy! Love it! Just a hint more garlic for my taste. 😍

  81. User avatar Mrs. Rosie Rosenbaum says:

    5 stars
Tasted just like the store-bought but way cheaper! Great stuff!

  82. 3 stars
I tried this but tasted kinda bland. Not enough garlic for me. I like it strong!

  83. User avatar anisha.klein1980 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but it turned out kinda bitter. Maybe too much basil?

    1. User avatar timika.lockman56 says:

      3 stars
Bitter? I thought basil was supposed to taste good! Maybe your basil was old or something.

    2. User avatar Johnson Mohr says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue once! Maybe try using a little less basil next time. It’s very strong!

  84. 2 stars
1 week in the fridge? Mine didn’t last that long… but I tried it and it turned brown the next couple days. Guess my fridge is too warm.

  85. 5 stars
Yum! Just made this for my friends and they all loved it! It was devoured in minutes. So good with bread!

  86. User avatar lorie.satterfield says:

    4 stars
Not a fan of pine nuts, so I used walnuts instead. Still tasted good!
    Is that okay? 🤔

  87. User avatar luis.gibson70 says:

    4 stars
    Wow. So easy.

  88. User avatar brigida.reinger10 says:

    5 stars
    Delicious!

  89. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I had to scrape down the sides a couple times. Also my basil was kind of wet and it turned out slightly runnier than expected, but flavor was still solid.

    1. User avatar pearlene.ward69 says:

      5 stars
That “scrape down the sides” part is so real—pesto loves to cling to the bowl. A slightly runnier texture could be from using wetter basil, so next time I’d pat the basil dry (or even give it a quick spin). Glad the flavor still held up though!

    2. User avatar marion.kling says:

      3 stars
Mine gets runny too if the basil is kinda wet… I think you need more pine nuts? Or maybe less olive oil. Also wet basil is probably why it didn’t thicken. Still sounds good tbh.

  90. User avatar shila.williamson says:

    3 stars
Meh… it’s good but not life-changing. Also my pesto turned brown fast even though I stored it right. Any tips?

  91. 5 stars
so easy and delish! 🍃😍 10/10 would recommend!

  92. User avatar rashad.braun54 says:

    3 stars
I dont have pine nuts, can I use peanuts instead? Seems like it would taste weird.

  93. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Quick and easy! Used it on a sandwich and wow!

  94. User avatar fabian.terry55 says:

    2 stars
Isn’t pesto supposed to have walnuts? Pine nuts are too expensive.

  95. 2 stars
I’m skeptical about the “up to a week” part. Mine started tasting off by day 4 even though I stored it in an airtight container. Could be my fridge, but yeah…

    1. User avatar bulah.hodkiewicz23 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, “up to a week” sounds optimistic. Pesto can go off fast depending on fridge temp, how much oxygen is trapped, and whether the basil oxidizes. I’ve had it sour around day 4-5 too even in a sealed container.

  96. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—so vibrant and fragrant. I toasted the pine nuts a bit longer and it really brought out the nutty flavor. Will definitely be a repeat.

  97. User avatar michael.halvorson44 says:

    3 stars
I’ve never used pine nuts before, can I substitute with something else? Don’t have any on hand. Thanks!

  98. User avatar juanita.batz39 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have pine nuts so used peanuts instead. Still good!

    1. User avatar davis.donnelly says:

      4 stars
Peanuts? That’s interesting! I’ve never tried that. Maybe I’ll give it a go!

  99. User avatar kiley.corkery says:

    2 stars
Why does everyone toast pine nuts? I skipped it and mine tasted kinda bland… maybe I didn’t mince the garlic enough either.

  100. 3 stars
I tried making it, but it came out too oily. Any tips?

  101. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

    5 stars
Yum! Just like my grandmother used to make! Delicious!

    1. User avatar eva.corwin54 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! There’s nothing like a recipe that brings back memories. 🍃

    2. User avatar margaretta.heidenreich says:

      2 stars
Looks good and all, but isn’t pesto just a fancy name for green goo? 🤔

I followed the steps exactly and it tasted too garlicky for me. Next time I’ll use less garlic or add it more lightly. The texture is nice though.

I used walnuts instead of pine nuts because they’re cheaper. Still turned out great! Gonna use this all summer!

  104. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

    1 star
Ughhh, why does it have to have pine nuts? Can’t I just use walnuts?

  105. User avatar jack.satterfield says:

I’m skeptical about using only 1/4 tsp salt—my cheese is never subtle. I guess it depends. Mine needed more pepper too.

  106. User avatar sirena.rogahn53 says:

This is the best pesto I’ve ever made! SO fresh and flavorful! 🥳

  107. 3 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my pesto tasted kinda salty. I’d say go light on the Parmesan and adjust at the end.

  108. User avatar hildegarde.runolfsdottir2008 says:

Basil? Isn’t that too much green stuff? LOL. Don’t think I can eat this. No offense!

  109. User avatar gregg.von1961 says:

2 cups of basil?? I didn’t have that much! I just did 1 cup and it was okay, but wish I had followed the recipe better.

  110. User avatar antonia.runolfsson1951 says:

This is the best pesto recipe I’ve ever tried! So fresh and full of flavor!

This pesto is out of this world! I made it for a pasta night and everyone loved it! 🌿🍝

  112. User avatar ned.wiegand says:

Pesto? What is that? Sounds like something from Italy.

    1. 3 stars
I don’t know about that. Sounds fancy. Can I use something else instead of pine nuts?

    2. User avatar Hyacinth Romaguera says:

      5 stars
Pesto is a tasty Italian sauce made mostly from basil! It’s really good with pasta.

  113. 3 stars
Basil makes best flavor! But is pine nuts necessary? They are expensive!

    1. User avatar catalina.lynch1986 says:

      5 stars
I totally get it! Pine nuts can be pricey. You can swap them for walnuts or even sunflower seeds for a budget-friendly option!

  114. 3 stars
Mine turned out a little bitter—probably I over-toasted the pine nuts. The texture was still nice, but I’d reduce the garlic next time. Not bad overall.

    1. User avatar jewell.conroy1991 says:

      3 stars
Hmm bitter pesto sounds like you need more lemon or something? I usually skip toasting pine nuts entirely, and the garlic I do like… a lot 😅 Maybe your processor chopped it too long too?

    2. User avatar quincy.windler79 says:

      5 stars
Totally makes sense—pine nuts can go bitter fast if they go past “golden.” Next time maybe toast them just 2–3 minutes and pull them the second they smell nutty. Also you can try adding a tiny splash more olive oil to mellow it out.

  115. User avatar Super Saiyan Vegeta says:

    5 stars
The garlic + basil combo is so classic. I like that the olive oil is added slowly while it runs—really helps emulsify.

  116. User avatar jodi.okeefe43 says:

    2 stars
Hate to be that person, but why 1/2 cup parmesan? Seems like way too much cheese. I’d cut it in half.

  117. 5 stars
    One word: perfect.

  118. 2 stars
Mine came out bitter for some reason. I’m thinking either the basil was older or I over-toasted the pine nuts. Anyone else?

  119. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    2 stars
This recipe is ok but I don’t think it goes with pasta, too strong flavor for me.

  120. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Gohan says:

Not my fav… I prefer store bought. This was too herb-y for me.

  121. 4 stars
Good recipe, but I had to add a splash more olive oil. My pesto turned out a bit thick after the first blend.

  122. 5 stars
This pesto is sooooo good! I can’t believe how easy it was! Definitely making it again!

  123. User avatar lola.keeling says:

I don’t own a food processor, so I used a mortar and pestle. It took forever but the texture was amazing. 10/10 effort reward.

    1. User avatar dawne.oberbrunner50 says:

      3 stars
Honestly I think food processor or bust. Mortar and pestle sounds like it would turn to paste way too fast… unless you’re really patient. Still, 10/10 is impressive.

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      5 stars
      That’s dedication 😄 I don’t have a processor either, so I can totally relate—mortar pesto is a workout, but it’s worth it!

  124. User avatar hugh.collier3 says:

    5 stars
Five stars! My whole family asked for it and I didn’t even have to convince them 😄

    1. 5 stars
Love this! 😄 Homemade pesto wins every time. What did you serve it with—pasta, sandwiches, or something else?

    2. User avatar graham.mante93 says:

      3 stars
Five stars is nice but… pine nuts are kinda expensive where I live 😅 Can I sub walnuts or just leave them out?

  125. User avatar sook.kub41 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but it came out too oily for my taste. Maybe I added too much olive oil? 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
I think it could be the olive oil, but maybe try less next time? I love this recipe! It’s so fresh. 😍

  126. User avatar edmond.romaguera2016 says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but my pine nuts weren’t toasted long enough. Still good though—just tasted a little raw. Would make again.

  127. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
This turned out super fragrant and bright—exactly what I want from pesto. I used a little extra lemon since my basil was mild. Delicious on pasta and sandwiches!

    1. User avatar jackson.simonis93 says:

      4 stars
Huh, I’ve always been scared of adding more lemon—thought it’d turn bitter. But if it worked for you, maybe I’ll try. Did you toast the pine nuts? Mine got a little smoky last time.

    2. User avatar chantelle.reilly26 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Bright + fragrant pesto is the dream 😍 Extra lemon makes total sense if your basil was mellow. Love it on sandwiches especially.

  128. User avatar brinda.rowe5 says:

    3 stars
Followed the steps exactly, but mine came out kinda oily and not as smooth. Maybe my food processor is too weak—still tasted good though.

  129. User avatar sammy.bosco says:

    2 stars
1st time ever doing pesto and it came out… fine. Wouldn’t say “wow,” but it’s good on pasta. My basil turned brown a bit in the fridge.

  130. User avatar jayme.fisher68 says:

    3 stars
I think it needs more garlic. The flavor was kinda bland for me.

  131. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

    3 stars
I love pesto, but this feels kinda heavy on cheese/oil balance. Next time I’ll reduce the olive oil a touch and add lemon.

  132. User avatar mary.emard41 says:

    5 stars
OMG this pesto is AMAZING! I could eat it on everything!

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      2 stars
I tried it but found it too strong. I guess pesto isn’t for everyone.

    2. User avatar marni.stanton62 says:

      5 stars
Right? It’s the best! I put it on pasta, sandwiches, even my salad! So versatile!

  133. User avatar kendra.cruickshank says:

Am I the only one who thinks 1/4 tsp salt is too much? Mine overpowered the basil a bit. Maybe depends on how salty your Parmesan is.

    1. User avatar randell.hauck2005 says:

      5 stars
I felt the same at first—1/4 tsp is definitely enough if your Parmesan is salty. I usually do a pinch, then taste and adjust.

    2. User avatar Rulindil says:

      4 stars
I use 1/4 tsp every time and it’s perfect for me. But yeah… if your parm is super salty or dry, it’ll definitely overpower. Just taste as you go.

  134. User avatar carmella.kuphal says:

    3 stars
It’s good but not mind-blowing. Like, it tastes like basil and cheese (shocking). Would still make again though.

  135. User avatar christiane.haley1980 says:

    4 stars
Garlic is definitely strong in this—like, punchy. I’ll use less garlic next time. Otherwise the flavor combo is solid.

  136. User avatar denis.jakubowski1987 says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make and so fresh! I just added some lemon juice for extra zing!

    1. User avatar frederick.bahringer99 says:

      3 stars
Looks easy, but I kinda doubt it stays fresh for a whole week. What if it gets brown?

    2. User avatar nathanial.willms39 says:

      5 stars
That sounds delicious! I love the idea of adding lemon juice for a fresh kick. Can’t wait to try it!

  137. User avatar dodie.reichert2013 says:

    2 stars
Honestly? Too much work for pesto when I can buy it. But homemade smell in the kitchen is unbeatable, I’ll give it that.

    1. User avatar Bowerick Wowbagger says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—store-bought is convenient. But yeah, that fresh basil/garlic smell is half the reason to do it at home. If you’ve got a minute (and basil!), this one’s worth it.

  138. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it’s super fresh—my apartment smells amazing. I used a little extra basil and it turned out thick and flavorful.

  139. 5 stars
Yum, I added more garlic and it was perfect! Just like my Grandma used to make. ❤️

    1. User avatar tracey.blanda says:

      5 stars
Garlic makes everything better! I love a good pesto. 🌿

  140. 4 stars
I was skeptical about making my own pesto, but this recipe was super simple. Just got a food processor and it worked perfectly!

  141. User avatar sharyn.rice2017 says:

    5 stars
This turned out super fresh and fragrant. The basil flavor really pops, and the pine nuts give it that nice rich bite.

  142. User avatar marlen.kautzer42 says:

    4 stars
It tastes amazing, but mine turned dark kinda fast. I think I waited too long to refrigerate—any tips to keep it bright?

  143. 4 stars
The ratios feel spot on. I blended mine a little too long though and it got slightly too smooth—still delicious on pasta.

  144. User avatar magen.carter3 says:

    4 stars
I don’t have pine nuts so I used walnuts. Still tasted great, though not exactly the same vibe.

  145. 3 stars
Not sure about “to taste” salt—mine ended up salty because my Parmesan was already salty. Still tasty, but measure carefully!

    1. User avatar ester.barton66 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—Parmesan can be salty enough that “to taste” turns into “oops.” I usually start with half the salt (or none) and add after tasting.

  146. User avatar bertha.koch says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was… fine. Like, edible pesto. Not wow enough for the effort, but I’d try again if I’m out of ideas.

  147. User avatar Ice Wraith says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I used walnuts because pine nuts were expensive, and it still tasted awesome. Next time I’ll mince the garlic even finer so it blends smoother.

  148. 4 stars
Not bad at all! I didn’t have pine nuts so I subbed walnuts and it still tasted great. Next time I’ll toast them a bit more.

  149. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
So easy! I made it in like 10 minutes. I froze half and it held up great for later.

  150. User avatar Ms. Efrain Wolff says:

    3 stars
The garlic amount felt strong to me. Next time I’ll use 2 cloves instead of 3 or roast it first.

    1. User avatar shaquana.mayer says:

      4 stars
I usually do 4 cloves 😅 but I’m also one of those people who loves garlic. Roasting first would probably mellow it out though—sounds good.

    2. 5 stars
Totally get that—garlic can be punchy in pesto. 2 cloves sounds like the sweet spot, especially if it’s fresh and strong. Roasting is a great idea too!

  151. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I hate mincing garlic. I used pre-minced and it still worked, but the flavor was weaker. Still tasty though.

  152. 5 stars
This is exactly the kind of pesto that tastes like summer. I added a bit more lemon juice though—made it brighter. Worked great with pasta and even on sandwiches.
