Chicken stuffing is one of those dishes that brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia to the table. It’s comforting, savory, and full of flavor, making it perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a cozy family dinner or a holiday feast. This dish combines tender chicken with a rich, flavorful stuffing that is infused with aromatic herbs and spices.
The stuffing itself is the heart of the dish. Made with bread cubes, sautéed vegetables like onions and celery, and seasoned with herbs such as sage, thyme, and rosemary, it’s a perfect balance of texture and flavor. Some variations may include sausage, apples, or nuts for added richness, while others stick to a more classic recipe. The stuffing absorbs the savory juices from the chicken as it cooks, creating a flavorful, aromatic filling that pairs perfectly with the meat.
What makes chicken stuffing such a popular dish is its versatility. It’s great for whole roasted chicken or chicken breasts, and can be baked in the bird or served separately on the side. The stuffing, while typically cooked inside the chicken, can also be prepared as a casserole, giving you a crispy top and moist interior.
Whether you serve it as a side dish or stuff the chicken directly, this combination is a showstopper that’s easy to make and always satisfying. The layers of flavor, from the tender chicken to the herby, savory stuffing, are guaranteed to please. It’s a dish that brings comfort and joy, with enough flexibility to make it your own.
For a lighter version, consider using a whole grain or cornbread base for the stuffing, or try adding roasted vegetables for a bit of extra texture. No matter how you prepare it, chicken stuffing is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
This recipe is made by Diana M Totten.

Ingredients
- 2 chicken breasts
- 8 oz. mushrooms
- 2 ribs celery
- 1 onion small
- 1 cream of chicken soup
- 1 cream of celery soup
- 1 package stuffing mix prepared
Instructions
- Cook the chicken breasts until fully cooked, then shred them.
- Slice the mushrooms.
- Dice the onion.
- Chop the celery.
- In a bowl, mix both cans of soup with milk.
- Place the shredded chicken in a 9×12 baking pan.
- Spread the sliced mushrooms on top of the chicken.
- In a separate bowl, mix the celery, onions, and seasonings with the soups and milk.
- Pour the soup mixture over the chicken and mushrooms.
- Spread the prepared stuffing mix on top of the soup mixture.
- If needed, add a little more water to help the stuffing spread easily.
- Bake the dish at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes or until the stuffing is browned.
Why do you bake at 350? That seems too low. I usually do it at 400!
I think 350 is perfect for many recipes! It cooks evenly. Don’t knock it till you try it! 😊
400 seems like a lot. You could burn it! But hey, whatever works for you I guess.
Nope. 350 for 30 min with stuffing on top didn’t cook through. I ended up microwaving parts and it was a mess. Won’t make again.
Ugh, that’s frustrating—especially if it was still undercooked at 30 minutes. I’d try covering the dish for the first ~20-30 minutes and then uncovering so the stuffing browns at the end. Also, chicken breast thickness can really change cook time.
I had my doubts but it turned out pretty good! Still, I wish there was more flavor.
Not gonna lie, the instructions are a little confusing—like step 8 mentions seasonings but none are listed. I improvised with what I had and it turned out alright.
Simple and hearty, love recipes where you just dump everything in a pan. My family went back for seconds, lol.
I tried this recipe but the stuffing came out kind of soggy. Maybe I put too much water? Not sure if I’ll make it again.
Honestly, I think you might have messed up the water part. It’s pretty easy to do, but I wouldn’t give up on this recipe just yet!
I feel ya! Soggy stuffing is the worst. Maybe try less water next time? Or bake it a bit longer? Just a thought!
Not a fan of mushrooms, so I omitted them. Still turned out nice.
What is cream of chicken soup?? Is that like regular soup? 🤔
Made this last night—so comforting. The mushrooms + stuffing combo is honestly the best part. I added a little garlic and it came out perfect.
This feels like “chicken casserole” and I mean that as a compliment. Next time I’ll add a little garlic and maybe some pepper because it tasted a bit mild.
Totally agree—this does have that chicken casserole vibe (in the best way). Garlic + a little black pepper would probably kick it up a notch. I’ll try that next time!
This is exactly the kind of meal that saves weeknights. Easy to assemble, feeds a bunch, and smells amazing while baking.
Can I use beef instead of chicken? I have some leftover steak.
I think beef would totally work! Just make sure to cook it well. I tried it once and it was delicious!
My kids ate it, so I’m calling it a win 😂 I did add a pinch of pepper and garlic powder because… why not. Next time I’ll probably use less soup so it’s not too creamy.
I dunno, the soup combo sounded gross to me. Ended up just mixing everything and leaving out the soup. Was decent, but not great.
This is a solid weeknight casserole vibe. The only change I’d make: sauté the onions/celery for a few minutes first so they’re not too crunchy. Still delicious though.
Delicious! My family loved it! I added some cheese on top and it was a hit!
Yum! I made this for my family and they want it every week now. Great recipe!
This was super easy to make! My kids devoured it. 5 stars!!
Chicken and stuffing is a classic! I love it! 🐔❤️
This feels like a casserole that’s trying to be “stuffing” lol. But I ate seconds, so… 🤷♀️
Haha I get that—stuffing vibes for sure, but with chicken in the base. And if you went back for seconds, it clearly worked 😄
This was okay… not my favorite. 3/5 is fair.
I followed it pretty much exactly and mine came out a little dry by the 30-minute mark. Next time I’ll add more water/broth and cover it with foil for the first half.
this is great but can it be made without chicken? my son is vegetarian. pls help!
You could try using mushrooms or a meat substitute instead! Just make sure you season it well!
How come it says to add milk but doesn’t say how much? I messed up the recipe.
This was just okay. Not the best chicken dish I’ve tried.
First time cooking chicken and it was a bit undercooked. Be careful!
Why do you need so many soups? Sounds weird to me. 😒
I think the soups add flavor and moisture! It’s a classic dish. 😋
A+ ! Cooked for the fam n they scarfed it down! ✨
Not sure if this is as good as it sounds… Is the stuffing really necessary? 🤔
Sounds delicious! Definitely gonna try this for my kids. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I tried this recipe and my kids wouldn’t eat it. Just saying.
Easy, quick, & cheap meal! Love it! 5 stars for sure!
Totally agree! This recipe is a lifesaver for busy nights. Thanks for sharing!
The soup + milk mixture was a little thick for me, so I had to add more water like the instructions say. After that, everything spread fine and baked up great.
Not impressed… the chicken was kinda dry and the mushrooms tasted weird. 2/5.
This is basically chicken casserole with stuffing. Which is fine! But I expected more “stuffing” flavor and less soupiness.
Totally get it—mine turned out a bit more “saucy” than I wanted too. Next time I’ll use less soup/milk or add the stuffing a little later so it doesn’t get drenched right away.
I don’t think it’s supposed to be super stuffing-y because the stuffing is on top of soup. If you want more flavor, try sautéing the mushrooms/onions first and add stuffing seasoning (or a dash of poultry seasoning) to the soup mix.
This chicken stuffing is a family fave! I added cheese on top and it was DELISH!
YUM!!! I can’t cook much, but this was super easy and quick. Perfect for weeknights!
I’m glad you found it easy! Weeknight meals should definitely be simple. 🥳
Looks good, but I don’t think chicken and mushrooms go together… just saying.
Absolutely delicious! I added some garlic and it took it to the next level.
Not gonna lie—mine was a little dry after 30 minutes. Maybe my baking dish is bigger than 9×12? I’ll adjust time or add more liquid next try.
Hmmm, used veggie soup instead of chicken, still turned out alright, I guess. Only a few people at the table liked it tho. 🤷♂️
This was AMAZING! The textures were perfect and my kids loved it too!
My grandma used to make a dish like this! It reminded me of home. ❤️ 5 stars!
Pretty easy weeknight meal. I added a pinch of garlic powder and black pepper and it tasted like “home cooking” for real.
I followed it mostly, except I didn’t add extra water. Mine was kinda dry and the stuffing got clumpy. The flavors were okay though.
I think chicken soup is gross. This recipe may be for other folks but not for me, sorry!
That’s okay! Everyone has their own taste. Just means more for those who love it! 😊
Made this tonight—so comforting. I used leftover chicken and it still turned out great. The mushrooms + soup combo is honestly a cheat code.
Delicious! Even my picky husband liked it. Definitely making again! 🐔✨
Why do you use cream of soups? They’re unhealthy and full of additives. I make mine from scratch and it’s way better. Just sayin’!
This recipe is a lifesaver! Super easy and my whole family loved it.
yummy chicken! Had for dinner last night. every1 asked for more.
Wow, I was skeptical about mixing soups but it actually works! I added some spices and it was yumm.
Y’all, this was way too salty for my taste. I think I won’t be trying again.
My stuffing was too soggy. Maybe I added too much water? Gonna try again and cut back.
Too much celery for my taste. Maybe use less next time? 3 star.
Less celery? Nah, I think it adds flavor! But I guess not everyone likes it, so whatever floats your boat.
I actually loved the celery in this dish! It gives it a nice crunch! Maybe you should try adjusting the amount instead of completely cutting it out.
In the instructions, you mentioned a separate bowl but didn’t say what to do with it. I was confused 🤔
I understand your confusion! Maybe the separate bowl is supposed to be for mixing the veggies. It’s not super clear in the steps, but I think you figured it out!
It’s not that complicated, I just mixed everything together without the separate bowl and it turned out fine. But yeah, could’ve been clearer.
This recipe is so quick and easy! I added a bit of garlic and it made it so flavorful. My kids gobbled it up!
I don’t know, I followed the recipe but it came out kinda dry. Maybe needs more soup?
I usually add an extra can of soup too! It helps with the dryness. 😄
Delicious! I added some garlic powder and it turned out amazing! 👌👌
Garlic powder? That sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to try that next time!
I dunno, just chicken and stuffing? How good can that really be? 🤔
Too much prep for me. I got tired chopping everything and just didn’t like it. 1 out of 5.
I liked it, but it felt a bit bland unless you season the stuffing mix itself. Next time I’ll add thyme or poultry seasoning.
I’m skeptical but tried it anyway. Surprisingly good! My kids called it “chicken gravy casserole” lol.
Lol “chicken gravy casserole” is honestly perfect 😂 I’m also skeptical of “simple” recipes but this combo sounds like it actually works—mushrooms + the two soups + stuffing on top… I bet it’s super comforting.
Chicken stuffing? Sounds like a meme recipe to me. I won’t trust it.
Not sure about the ratios—there wasn’t enough liquid for the stuffing to spread for me. I had to add extra water AND a splash of chicken broth.
You forgot to mention salt and pepper for all that stuff! It needed flavor!
Cream of chicken + cream of celery is like the ultimate shortcut. My family ate it fast. The stuffing topping stayed nice, not soggy.
Yes!! Cream of chicken + cream of celery is such a lifesaver. Glad your stuffing didn’t turn soggy—that’s always the fear with casseroles 😄 I’m stealing this formula for next week.
Tried this tonight—so comforting. I used a little extra mushrooms and it came out really flavorful. The stuffing top got nicely browned too.
This is comfort food gold. I used extra mushrooms and it turned out super savory. The 350°F/30 min worked great for me—nice and browned on top!
So easy to make, my kids loved it! 👌 Definitely making it again!
Yum! It’s like a warm hug in a pan. 😍
Made this last night. My mom woulda loved it. Lots of memories, thanks for sharing! ❤️
I’m so glad it brought back memories for you! This recipe is a real winner! 😊
The amounts confuse me a lil—“2 ribs celery” like… how much is that? I chopped about 1 cup and it came out decent. Would make again.
Two chicken breasts only… seems kinda low? Like I thought it would be more filling, but maybe because I used a bigger pan. Taste was alright, but texture was meh.
I get what you mean—2 chicken breasts can feel a little skimpy depending on how big the pan is and how much stuffing you use. I usually bump to 3 breasts (or add extra mushrooms) so it’s more filling. Glad it tasted alright though!
