Carrot Hot Dogs

September 20, 2024

Carrot Hot Dogs are a creative, plant-based alternative to traditional hot dogs, offering all the satisfying flavors and textures without any meat. Made with hearty, seasoned carrots, these “hot dogs” are perfect for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone looking to enjoy a healthier, cruelty-free version of a classic American favorite. The carrots are marinated in a savory blend of spices, then grilled or roasted to achieve a smoky, tender texture that mimics the satisfying bite of a traditional hot dog. Topped with your favorite condiments and served in a bun, carrot hot dogs are sure to become a fun and flavorful addition to your next cookout or casual meal.

The process of making carrot hot dogs begins with selecting firm, medium-sized carrots. After peeling and trimming them to fit in a hot dog bun, the carrots are marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, liquid smoke, garlic, onion powder, and other spices. The marinating process helps infuse the carrots with rich, savory flavors that give them a meaty taste and a deeper color. After marinating for a few hours, the carrots are either grilled or roasted, which softens them while also caramelizing the marinade, enhancing the flavors and adding a bit of char for that “grilled hot dog” taste.

What makes carrot hot dogs so appealing is their versatility. Once grilled or roasted, they can be topped with anything you’d put on a regular hot dog—ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, or sauerkraut. You can also get creative with your toppings by adding avocado, pickled vegetables, or a drizzle of vegan mayo or spicy mustard for extra flavor. For a fun twist, try adding a sprinkle of fresh herbs or a bit of hot sauce for an added kick.

Carrot hot dogs are perfect for a summer BBQ, a fun dinner idea, or even as a healthier alternative for kids. They’re easy to prepare and serve, making them a great option for meal prep or a quick weeknight meal. Plus, they’re naturally gluten-free and packed with nutrients, offering a healthy, satisfying alternative to traditional hot dogs without sacrificing taste or texture.

Whether you’re looking to reduce your meat consumption or just trying something new, carrot hot dogs are a fun and delicious way to enjoy a classic dish in a fresh, plant-based way.

A delicious and healthy alternative to traditional hot dogs, made with tender marinated carrots.
Servings 4 people
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 carrots peeled and trimmed, large
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce low sodium
  • 1/4 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 4 hot dog buns to serve
  • additional toppings such as mustard, ketchup, relish, etc.

Instructions

  • Bring a pot of water to boil and cook the carrots for about 6-8 minutes until they are fork-tender but not too soft.
  • While carrots are cooking, mix soy sauce, vegetable broth, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, liquid smoke, garlic powder, and onion powder in a shallow dish.
  • After draining the carrots, add them to the marinade. Let them marinate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for the best flavor.
  • Preheat a grill or skillet over medium heat. Cook the marinated carrots, turning occasionally, until they are slightly charred and heated through, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Serve each carrot in a hot dog bun with your choice of toppings.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical—carrots in a hot dog bun? But the char on the skillet really helps. My kids asked for seconds (which is rare).

These carrot hot dogs are surprisingly delish! I was really skeptical at first, but boy, they turned out great with some mustard. 5 stars!

    1. 3 stars
I’m not sure if carrots can taste like hot dogs. Sounds weird to me, but glad it worked for you! Maybe I’ll try it if I find some good toppings.

    2. 3 stars
Umm, carrots tasting like hot dogs? Really? Sounds kinda weird, but I’m willing to give it a shot. Maybe?

  5. User avatar Spider Soldier says:

    2 stars
Just tried this recipe, and it was a total flop for me. The carrots were too soft and didn’t taste right. 2/5

    1. User avatar abraham.ratke says:

I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe they were overcooked? I like mine a bit crunchy. Give it another try! 😊

  6. User avatar vito.hodkiewicz says:

So yummy!! I added some jalapeños for a kick, and it was fire! Definitely making it again!

  7. User avatar zachariah.kuhic says:

Love the idea of turning carrots into “hot dogs”! The maple + liquid smoke combo sounds dangerously good. I’ll probably cut them a bit thicker so they don’t dry out on the grill.

    1. User avatar marty.hand53 says:

      3 stars
I tried something like this once and they came out kinda soggy 😅 Maybe thicker helps though. Also 6-8 minutes boiling feels long? I’d worry they’ll fall apart by the time you grill them. But hey, maple syrup + smoke sounds legit.

    2. 5 stars
This is such a fun idea—carrot “hot dogs” are definitely my kind of snack. The maple + liquid smoke combo sounds like it would taste super close to the real deal. I like your tip about thicker cuts too; carrots dry out fast on the grill!

  8. 1 star
Carrots can’t be hot dogs! That’s just wrong.

  9. User avatar son.wilkinson38 says:

    4 stars
I’m confused. Why not just eat a carrot? Why turn it into a hot dog? LOL.

    1. 4 stars
But where’s the fun in that? Sometimes it’s cool to switch things up! 😄

  10. User avatar ruben.wolff says:

    5 stars
Hahaha, I can’t believe it, but I liked it! Who knew? I’ll make these again for sure!

    1. User avatar katy.spencer46 says:

I’m so glad you liked it! It’s amazing how simple veggies can surprise us. What toppings did you use?

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, carrots as hot dogs? Sounds kinda weird. Wouldn’t regular hot dogs be better?

  11. 3 stars
The ingredient list feels like it’s missing something… like maybe a little fat or salt? Mine tasted a bit tangy from the vinegar, but ketchup fixed it.

  12. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

    5 stars
Tried making these for a veggie cookout and everyone went crazy over them! I didn’t tell them they were carrots at first. Ha! 5 stars!

    1. 5 stars
That sounds delicious! I can’t believe they’re made from carrots. I’m definitely trying this at my next barbecue! 😋

  13. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
My nephew said they tasted like cardboard… kids can be brutal! Maybe more seasoning next time?

  14. 4 stars
Carrot hot dogs? Sounds weird but I gave it a shot. They’re actually pretty good! Didn’t expect to like them that much. 4 stars!

  15. 5 stars
Tried these tonight—so good! The liquid smoke + maple combo is surprisingly “hot dog” tasting. I marinated overnight and it really paid off.

  16. User avatar marilynn.turcotte says:

    4 stars
Great recipe! Simple and healthy! I think I’ll use zucchini next time instead of carrots to mix it up.

  17. User avatar Draugr Scourge says:

    1 star
More like carrot not-dogs. My kids won’t eat this stuff, so I’m out. 😒

  18. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical because it’s “just carrots” but the marinade is doing the heavy lifting. My kids asked for seconds, which is rare for new recipes.

  19. User avatar basementDweller says:

    2 stars
I dunno, this seems kinda weird. Carrots instead of hot dogs? Not sure I can wrap my head around it.

  20. 4 stars
So easy to make! I used the leftovers in a salad. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar Skye Price says:

      5 stars
Sounds great! I love using leftovers creatively, I might try that too!

  21. User avatar les.skiles3 says:

I messed up and boiled them too long 😩 but still edible.

  22. User avatar boris.windler says:

    2 stars
meh. They’re okay. not as good as real hot dogs tho.

    1. User avatar Daedric Prince says:

      2 stars
Nah, not feeling it. Carrots just ain’t hot dogs, you know?

    2. 4 stars
I think they’re really good! Give them a try with some mustard, they might surprise you! 🥕

  23. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    4 stars
The marinade smell while it’s cooking is kinda intense (in a good way). Also, I used regular soy sauce by accident and it was saltier—just watch that.

  24. User avatar weston.schowalter1995 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think this can beat a real hot dog… carrots?? Seriously?

  25. User avatar ryan.wuckert says:

Yum! I added some spicy mustard and it was delish. Perfect for my summer BBQ.

  26. User avatar johnathan.schaden27 says:

    3 stars
I messed up the marinade, oops. Still kinda tasty I guess.

  27. 1 star
Ugh, I thought these would taste like real hot dogs. They didn’t. Wasn’t a fan.

  28. User avatar everett.lesch60 says:

    5 stars
I’ve been looking for a good veggie hot dog recipe, and this one did not disappoint! Tasted fantastic!

  29. User avatar cornelius.olson3 says:

    3 stars
Honestly, this is more like “carrot sandwiches” than hot dogs. The flavor is good but the texture and shape didn’t fool me.

  30. User avatar Twisted Fate says:

    3 stars
The liquid smoke feels a little intense. I used the full 1/2 tsp and it was smokey-smokey in a way that’s almost BBQ-sauce energy. Tasty, but overpowering for my taste.

  31. User avatar rosa.halvorson77 says:

    2 stars
1/2 a tsp of liquid smoke? That’s too much for carrots! Next time I’ll stick to real hot dogs.

    1. User avatar Katarina says:

      4 stars
I get your point, but you might be surprised how good they turn out! Liquid smoke can add a nice flavor if used right.

    2. User avatar gavin.braun1982 says:

      2 stars
Nah, man! Just stick to the real deal, hot dogs for life! Carrots can’t replace that taste.

  32. User avatar angie.robel2001 says:

    3 stars
Uh what’s liquid smoke? Can I use actual smoke? LOL 😂 Just kidding!

  33. User avatar beth.king2021 says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have apple cider vinegar, so I used regular vinegar and it tasted kinda harsh. Might be fine if you stick to the recipe—just saying substitutions matter.

  34. User avatar angelo.cummerata22 says:

    2 stars
Ok but like… why not just use actual hot dogs? 😅 Still, I appreciate the effort. The buns + mustard helped a lot. Would eat again if I’m going meatless.

    1. User avatar jackie.yundt2016 says:

      5 stars
Fair question 😄 I think the carrot dogs are more about getting that “hot dog” vibe without the actual meat, and they soak up the marinade so well. Glad the buns + mustard worked for you!

  35. 1 star
This is just plain weird. Carrots in a hot dog bun? Not for me. 1 star.

  36. User avatar woodrow.cronin says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have broth so I used water, and it came out kinda bland… might try again and do different seasonings.

  37. 5 stars
    Delish!

  38. User avatar gilberto.marks says:

    4 stars
My family was skeptical at first, but the char really sells it. We did mustard and relish and it tasted surprisingly close to the vibe of actual hot dogs.

    1. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

      3 stars
Hmmm mustard and relish I get… but liquid smoke + maple syrup sounds kinda odd to me. Did it taste more sweet-salty than hot dog? Also, did you char them in a pan or on the grill? I might try it but I’m nervous 😅

    2. User avatar Super Saiyan 3 Goku says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—once they get that char, it does feel way closer than I expected. We were skeptical too, but the mustard/relish combo made it “hot dog-ish” enough for everyone.

  39. 5 stars
These carrot “dogs” are seriously flavorful—liquid smoke + maple is such a good combo. I marinated overnight and the texture was nice (not mushy).

  40. User avatar cameron.wolf says:

    5 stars
This is an interesting take on hot dogs! I never thought about using carrots. My kids loved them!

  41. 2 stars
Is it really a hot dog if it’s just a carrot? I still don’t know about this one.

  42. User avatar christy.legros9 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the liquid smoke hype. It’s a strong flavor and I felt like it overpowered the carrot. Would use less next time.

    1. User avatar latrina.smitham93 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—liquid smoke can be super overpowering. Next time I’d start with maybe 1/4 tsp and taste after marinating a bit. Your suggestion to cut it down makes sense.

  43. User avatar mathWizard says:

    5 stars
These carrot dogs are a game changer! So good!

  44. User avatar brant.turcotte2018 says:

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      4 stars
I can’t believe you liked it! I’ve tried vegan hot dogs before, but they were just gross. Maybe I should give this a try with my kids too.

  45. User avatar shana.turner says:

    4 stars
Good idea, but 1 hour wasn’t enough for my taste. I needed overnight like the recipe says, otherwise it tasted a bit like “salty carrot salad” lol.

  46. User avatar kylie.bernhard19 says:

    4 stars
Okay but… 1/2 tsp liquid smoke seems like a lot? Mine tasted a bit too smoky for me until I added more buns/toppings to balance it. Still tasty though.

  47. 1 star
Y’all are playing! Carrots as hot dogs? Who thought of this?! Not gonna lie, I’m not into it. Just stick with the real thing. 1 star.

  48. User avatar brain.bergstrom65 says:

    5 stars
Honestly, this is such a clever idea. The liquid smoke + maple syrup combo sounds like it’ll taste super “hot dog-ish” even without the meat.

  49. User avatar Mr. Sharri Koch says:

    2 stars
I dunno, using carrots? Seems weird. Like, have you tried actual hot dogs?

  50. User avatar Stasia Ondricka says:

Hmm, my kids didn’t like this. Said it tasted weird. Maybe good for adults? idk

  51. User avatar Hillman Hunter says:

The marinade was super flavorful even before cooking. I marinated overnight and they came out juicy. Honestly better than some veggie dogs I’ve had.

  52. User avatar janita.becker61 says:

    3 stars
Carrot + bun = not a hot dog. But surprisingly tastes okay.

  53. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
These were a big hit at my BBQ last weekend! Everyone was shocked when I said they were carrots!

    1. 4 stars
Wow, I never thought of using carrots like that! Sounds interesting, will give it a try!

    2. 2 stars
Carrots as hot dogs? That sounds kinda weird. Are you sure they actually taste good?

  54. User avatar Lane Treutel II says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but my carrots stayed kinda firm even after marinating. Maybe I cut them too thick—still tasty though.

  55. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
These were surprisingly good—carrots actually taste “doggy” with the liquid smoke. I marinated overnight and followed the char step, and wow. Will make again.

    1. 5 stars
Honestly I’m surprised too—liquid smoke can be hit or miss, but your overnight marinate + char step sounds like the missing piece. Gonna try this next week!

  56. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    2 stars
Carrot hot dogs?? Bet they dont even taste close to real ones lol

    1. User avatar mariana.barrows18 says:

Nah man, a carrot will never taste like a hot dog. Sounds like a waste of carrots!

    2. User avatar yanira.reynolds86 says:

I thought the same! But I tried it and honestly it was pretty good! Different, but good!

  59. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    4 stars
Tasty! Next time I’ll add more spices for kick! 🌶️

  60. 2 stars
idk, carrot in a bun just feels… wrong? I mean it tastes fine, but it’s not the same as a real hot dog. Would eat again maybe.

  61. User avatar shela.herzog says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought the liquid smoke would be too much, but 1/2 tsp was just right. I used a grill pan instead of a grill and it still worked.

  62. User avatar kary.gaylord2 says:

So simple but soooo good. I added some jalapeños for a kick. 🔥🔥

  63. User avatar gianna.harvey76 says:

Wait, are we really using carrots instead of meat? Gonna try it but not sure 😬

  64. User avatar irvin.legros says:

I don’t even like carrots, but these were nice! Who knew you could do this???

  65. 1 star
Carrot hot dogs? Really? Who came up with this? 😂 I would rather have a real hot dog any day.

    1. 4 stars
I know it sounds weird, but these are really good! You should try them! 🤤

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      2 stars
Nah, I’ll stick to meat. This is just not right! Who would want a carrot as a hot dog? 😅

  66. 4 stars
I liked the tang from the vinegar and the sweetness from the maple. Next time I’ll probably use a bit less sauce in the pan so it doesn’t get too salty, but overall solid plant-based comfort food.

    1. User avatar Siona Atreides says:

      3 stars
Maybe I’m missing something, but 1/4 cup soy sauce always seems like a lot. Mine came out pretty salty even after marinating. Next time I’ll try low-sodium like you said (or less sauce) and see how it goes.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—the vinegar + maple combo is such a nice balance. I’ve made these once and “slightly charred” is key for that hot-dog vibe. 👍

  67. User avatar antonio.koelpin95 says:

    3 stars
Tried making this but the carrots were too crunchy. Can you make em softer??

  68. 4 stars
Turned out great! The marinade gave it so much flavor. Will make again!

  69. 5 stars
Easy enough, and my picky eater ate them… which is basically a miracle. Also the smell on the grill is amazing.

  70. User avatar mireille.gibson20 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about carrots as hot dogs, but the cook time worked for me. Mine got a little too soft after 8 minutes in boiling water, so I’d pull them closer to 6-7.

  71. User avatar les.mayert60 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, man. Carrots on a bun? Sounds kinda weird to me.

  72. User avatar ivana.spinka says:

    2 stars
I tried making this, but the carrots took forever to cook. No offense, but it is too much work for a veggie!

  73. 4 stars
Honestly, I was skeptical at first. Carrots as hot dogs? But after trying it, I was pleasantly surprised. Still prefer beef though.

  74. User avatar harriette.gaylord92 says:

    4 stars
WOW, these were so good! I added some grilled onions too. Will make again.

    1. 5 stars
Grilled onions sound awesome! Can’t wait to try that next time.

    2. User avatar chris.dicki says:

      3 stars
I dunno about carrot hot dogs, seems weird to me. Do they really taste like hot dogs? 🤔

  75. User avatar twanda.anderson says:

    5 stars
What a healthy alternative! Made them for a BBQ and everyone loved em!

  76. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

    5 stars
Tried these last weekend—so weirdly good. The liquid smoke + maple is the combo that makes it taste “hot dog-ish.” We did extra char on the grill and it was a hit.

  77. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical at first, but they actually taste like something you’d crave. I used a cast iron skillet and got a good char.

  78. 1 star
Not a fan, sauce was too strong for me. 👎

  79. User avatar lawerence.hintz says:

    5 stars
My buns got cold fast because I was fussing with toppings 😅 otherwise this was actually great. Ketchup + relish on top is mandatory!

  80. User avatar nicky.hettinger45 says:

    3 stars
The marinade is flavorful, but my carrots stayed a little too firm after grilling. Next time I’ll either parboil a minute longer or slice them thinner for more tenderness.

  81. 5 stars
Tried these and they came out sweet-smoky with a nice tang. The 1 hour minimum is legit—overnight makes them way deeper. Great for a quick veggie meal.

  82. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
Yum! Who knew carrots could taste like hot dogs? Mind blown!

  83. 3 stars
I followed it and it came out kinda sweet and smoky, like teriyaki-ish. If you don’t like sweet sauces, reduce the maple syrup maybe.

    1. 5 stars
That makes sense—maple syrup + liquid smoke can definitely read like teriyaki. Next time I’d cut the maple syrup in half and see if it balances out. Thanks for the heads-up!

    2. 3 stars
Mine was sweet too, I thought maybe my carrots were just super sweet? I used the full 1 tbsp maple syrup like the recipe says and it was kinda overpowering. I might lower it next time or add more vinegar for bite.

  84. User avatar sharron.erdman32 says:

    4 stars
This made for a nice summer BBQ dish! Def recommend 👌

  85. User avatar lyndsay.kerluke says:

    3 stars
Didn’t have some ingredients, so I just skipped them. They came out okay but kind of bland. Maybe follow the recipe more closely next time.

    1. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

      4 stars
Skipping ingredients is risky! The marinade is what makes it flavorful. Next time, try to stick to the recipe more. It really adds to the taste!

  86. 4 stars
Pretty good overall. Mine were a little too salty because I forgot to use low-sodium soy sauce (oops). Next time I’ll be careful.

  87. 1 star
This is the worst! Carrots do not belong in hot dog buns! UGH! 😤

    1. User avatar ozie.oberbrunner7 says:

      4 stars
I understand you’re frustrated, but have you tried it? Carrots can taste really good when marinated right! 🌱

  88. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about carrot “hot dogs,” but they charred up nicely and the sauce soaked in. My kid even asked for seconds.

  89. User avatar sang.wisoky98 says:

    3 stars
I only marinated for like 30 minutes and they still turned out decent. The garlic/onion powders came through strong though—could be perfect for some, too much for others.

  90. User avatar adena.padberg83 says:

    2 stars
This is kind of a stretch for “hot dogs.” Like, where’s the dog 😂 but the buns idea is cool.

  91. User avatar Super Saiyan Goku says:

    2 stars
1/2 tsp liquid smoke is too much for me. It overpowered everything and my kitchen smelled like a campfire 😅

  92. User avatar tori.gusikowski2002 says:

    4 stars
I’ll give it a try, but soy sauce + maple syrup feels like a strange duet… like sweet teriyaki on a hot dog lol. If it works, I’m impressed.

  93. User avatar emerita.waelchi45 says:

    5 stars
OMG best recipe ever! My vegan friends loved them and I can’t believe how easy they were! Thanks!

  94. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe pretty closely, but my carrots got kinda soft even before grilling. Next time I’ll shave a little time off the boiling or cut them thicker.

  95. User avatar lino.beatty says:

    4 stars
why does this take an hour at minimum 😅. But yeah the marinade helps. I’d prep the night before next time, just for sanity.

  96. User avatar Fern Hansen says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, the liquid smoke freaked me out. It’s a strong flavor, and I think next time I’ll cut it in half. Still edible though.

  97. User avatar kareem.harris78 says:

    4 stars
I made these and the marinade tasted amazing but when grilled the texture went kinda mushy. I think I overcooked the initial carrot boil (too soft). If you nail the 6-8 minutes, you’re golden.

    1. 5 stars
This makes sense. I did the same thing once—carrots got too soft in the boil and then they just fell apart on the grill. I’m gonna stick to fork-tender only, 6 minutes maybe. Thanks!

I’m confused about the timing—boil 6-8 minutes, then grill 8-10. That seems like it might overcook? Mine got a bit mushy after I marinated overnight and then cooked too long.

Hmm mine never got mushy doing it that way. Maybe your carrots were cut too small or your grill heat was too high. If the outside chars before the middle is warm, you end up overcooking them. Try medium-low and watch them like 5-7 minutes on the grill.

Totally get the worry—6–8 min boil + another 8–10 on the grill is a lot if your carrots were already soft. I usually pull them when they’re just barely fork-tender, like closer to 6 minutes, then grill less (more like 6–8). Also, overnight marinating can make them feel mushy if the carrots were thin—try thicker cuts.

I used regular soy sauce because that’s what I had—still tasted fine. But I didn’t get much char in my skillet, so it felt more like braised carrots than grilled.

I made this for a weeknight and it was pretty good. I didn’t marinate overnight (just 1.5 hours) and it still had flavor, but next time I’ll wait longer for sure.
