Baked Shrimp with Baharat

May 14, 2024

Shrimp dishes often lean toward the familiar, garlic butter, lemon, maybe a touch of chili, but when you want something a little more adventurous, Baked Shrimp with Baharat is the answer. This aromatic, spiced dish is quick to prepare, full of bold flavor, and brings the warmth of Middle Eastern cooking into your kitchen in the most inviting way.

Baharat, a fragrant spice blend used throughout the Middle East, is the star here. While its exact mix can vary by region, it usually includes black pepper, paprika, cardamom, cloves, cumin, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The result? A beautifully balanced seasoning that’s earthy, slightly sweet, and deeply savory. When tossed with shrimp and baked until just tender, baharat adds a depth of flavor that transforms a simple protein into something special.

This dish comes together with minimal effort. The shrimp marinate briefly in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and the baharat blend before being baked in a hot oven. In just 10–12 minutes, they emerge juicy, tender, and infused with warm, spiced flavor. The smell alone is enough to make you hungry before it even hits the table.

Serve the shrimp over a bed of couscous, rice, or with warm flatbread to soak up the juices. Add a side of cucumber yogurt or a simple tomato salad for a refreshing contrast. Whether you’re cooking for one or feeding a crowd, the versatility of this dish makes it a fantastic choice.

Baked Shrimp with Baharat feels like something you’d discover in a cozy seaside café or a bustling spice market, yet it’s made with everyday ingredients and ready in under 30 minutes. It’s an easy way to explore new flavors, spice up your dinner rotation, and bring a touch of culinary adventure to your table, no passport required.

I followed it mostly, but I accidentally used bottled lemon juice instead of sliced lemons… still good though. Would definitely do slices next time for that fresh pop.

Really? Baharat? I always just use garlic and butter for shrimp. Seems fancy for shrimp, but whatever works!

I totally agree! Baharat is such an underrated spice! Can’t wait to try this myself. 😊

I love Baharat, so I was excited. The flavor is bold and warm, but I think 2 tsp might be a bit much if you’re sensitive to spice—next time I’ll use 1.5 tsp.

  5. 5 stars
Short on time and this delivered. Also the lemon slices look fancy even when you’re just hungry. Easy dinner!

Why do you have to bake? Can’t you just fry them? Bakin shrimp seems weird, y’know?

Too many steps for shrimp. Just grill them, why complicate things?

    1. User avatar Elvin Upton says:

Grilling is easier, I agree! But like, baking can make it fancy. Not my style tho.

I get what you mean, but sometimes a little flavor makes it worth it! This recipe sounds yummy.

    Shrimp is shrimp. 🤷‍♂️

This was amazing! The flavors were so rich and the shrimp cooked perfectly. I will definitely make it again!

Mine came out a bit rubbery—probably overcooked. Also I used pre-cooked shrimp by accident (my bad). If using raw shrimp, I bet it’s great.

    1. 4 stars
Ahh bummer—rubbery usually means they went a bit too long in the oven. For me, 12 minutes is the sweet spot at 400°F. Raw shrimp + don’t overbake should help a lot.

Pre-cooked shrimp can get weird fast, yeah. Next time just use whatever the package says but I’d shorten the time like 8-10 mins. Also mine came out good even without lemon on top (maybe).

Not gonna lie, baharat is kind of intense—so I only used 1 tsp and it still tasted great. Next time I might add a little garlic too, but the base recipe is good.

Why are lemons on shrimp? That sounds weird… Can’t be good.

  14. User avatar delsie.bosco says:

Baharat? What is that? I used Italian seasoning instead and it tasted fine!

    1. 5 stars
Never heard of baharat, sounds fancy! Italian seasoning works too, who cares if it’s not traditional? Food is all about what you like, right?

    2. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

Baharat is a Middle Eastern spice mix! It’s really nice for flavor. But hey, as long as your dish turned out good with Italian seasoning, that’s what matters! 👍

Pretty tasty, but I felt like it needed more sauce. Next time I’ll add a little garlic or maybe a drizzle of yogurt/garlic sauce on top.

Baharat on shrimp sounds weird to me but I tried it anyway. It’s actually kinda tasty. I wouldn’t call it “fancy” though—more like a weeknight meal.

  22. 2 stars
I think this recipe is misleading. They say shrimp cook fast but mine took 30 mins! 🤔

    1. User avatar gale.gleason2 says:

I had a similar issue! Mine took longer too, maybe they weren’t fresh enough? 🤷‍♀️

  23. 4 stars
I didn’t have Baharat, so I used curry powder instead. It was surprisingly good! 😂

  24. 4 stars
Yum! So good and easy! Will definitely make this again. 👍

  25. User avatar Colby Hagenes says:

Super easy and quick! My kids devoured it! 😊 Will definitely make it again!

  26. 3 stars
Good recipe but my shrimp were tiny. Still tasted good tho! Next time, bigger shrimp.

  27. User avatar carolann.lindgren75 says:

Shrimp is nice, but I prefer it grilled. This was okay, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

  28. User avatar august.brakus47 says:

Made this tonight—so good! The Baharat smell is unreal, and the shrimp stayed juicy even after baking. I used a little extra lemon and it was perfect.

  29. 3 stars
It was ok, but I don’t really like shrimp that much. My husband loved it tho!

  30. 5 stars
Absolutely loved this recipe! The Baharat spice gave the shrimp such a unique flavor. Will definitely make again.

  31. 3 stars
Decent but I didn’t have Baharat. Just used regular spices and it was okay. Could be better.

  32. User avatar cristopher.considine1972 says:

idk about “Baharat” like… it turned kinda bitter on mine. Maybe my spice blend was old? Not my favorite, but not a disaster.

  33. User avatar Daedric Prince says:

    5 stars
This is legit restaurant-style. The seasoning clings nicely and the smell while baking is amazing. I served it with rice and everything worked.

  34. 3 stars
I thought Baharat was a type of fish. Turns out its just a spice? LOL. Recipe was okay tho.

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      4 stars
Haha, I can see how you’d mix that up! Baharat is definitely a spice and adds great flavor! Glad you somewhat enjoyed the recipe though!

  35. User avatar marlyn.parker65 says:

I don’t know about this. Baharat? Is that the same as garam masala? I think I’ll just stick to my old recipe.

  36. User avatar theresia.legros2023 says:

Delicious! Even my kids loved it. They usually hate shrimp! Thanks for sharing!

  37. User avatar donny.osinski1998 says:

Baked shrimp? More like baked disappointment… It was too salty for my taste!

  38. User avatar steve_maga says:

    3 stars
Nice flavor, but 400°F for 12-15 mins feels like a wide window—mine went from perfect to slightly overcooked near the end. Next time I’ll check at 10-11 minutes.

    1. User avatar Eleanor Smith says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that 12–15 min range is pretty wide—oven temps and shrimp size make a big difference. I usually do check at ~10–11 like you said, then pull them as soon as they’re just pink and opaque so they don’t turn rubbery near the end. Great call!

  39. 3 stars
I followed it exactly but mine was a little bland? Maybe my baharat blend isn’t strong. I might add extra pepper or a pinch of chili next time. Still edible though.

    1. 5 stars
That sounds like a good call—baharat can vary a lot by brand. I usually start with 2 tsp and then bump it up next time too (or add a little chili/extra pepper like you said). The lemon helps, but it won’t fix weak seasoning. Glad it was still edible!

  40. 3 stars
This was just okay for me. I’ve had better shrimp dishes. The spices might not be my thing.

    1. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

      4 stars
I get it! Baharat can be a strong flavor! Maybe try it with garlic next time? It’s bomb!
