Avocado Pasta

August 6, 2024

Avocado pasta is one of those meals that feels indulgent but is secretly healthy. It’s creamy without using any cream, flavorful without needing a dozen ingredients, and quick enough to throw together on a busy weeknight. If you love avocados and pasta, this dish is a perfect match.

The beauty of avocado pasta lies in its simplicity. Ripe avocados blend into a smooth, silky sauce that coats the pasta like a dream. With just a few additions – garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and maybe a handful of basil or parsley – you get a fresh, vibrant sauce in minutes. No stove, no simmering, just a blender or food processor and you’re halfway to dinner.

This recipe has a naturally rich texture, thanks to the healthy fats in the avocado. It clings to spaghetti, linguine, or even penne without feeling heavy. The lemon juice not only adds brightness but also keeps the avocado from turning brown too quickly. If you like a little heat, toss in some crushed red pepper flakes for a kick.

Avocado pasta is also incredibly versatile. You can toss in roasted cherry tomatoes, grilled chicken, or sautéed shrimp to make it more filling. For a vegetarian option, try topping it with toasted pine nuts or a sprinkle of nutritional yeast. Want extra greens? Add spinach, arugula, or peas right into the mix.

It’s a great way to make use of ripe avocados before they go bad, and it comes together faster than most traditional pasta sauces. The whole dish is ready in the time it takes to boil the pasta – no need to turn on the oven or wait for anything to bake.

Light, creamy, and full of flavor, avocado pasta is comfort food with a healthy twist. It’s perfect for warm-weather meals or anytime you want something fresh but satisfying. Once you try it, it just might become one of your go-to pasta dishes.

It was okay. Kinda bland for me—needed more salt and more basil. Also my avocados weren’t ripe enough so it didn’t feel as creamy.

  2. User avatar scottie.jast1972 says:

    2 stars
Just okay. Maybe I expected too much. Not a fan of the texture.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get it! The texture can be hit or miss. Maybe try adding more oil next time for a creamier feel?

  3. User avatar russell.schimmel61 says:

    5 stars
This was amazing! So creamy and delicious.

  4. User avatar frances.bartoletti84 says:

I tried this recipe, but the avocado turned brown too fast. Thought it would stay green. Disappointed.

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      3 stars
Brown? That shouldn’t happen, right? I guess maybe it wasn’t ripe enough? 🤔

    2. 4 stars
I know what you mean! Avocados can be tricky. Try adding some lemon juice to keep it green longer next time!

  5. User avatar mary.leuschke1963 says:

I’m skeptical about mixing avocado with pasta without cooking it—won’t it get weird? But honestly it worked. The garlic + tomato combo was way better than I expected.

  6. 5 stars
This recipe is wonderful! I added some grilled chicken instead of shrimp and it was so creamy. Would definitely make again!

    1. User avatar reggie.okeefe86 says:

Glad you enjoyed it! Grilled chicken sounds like a great twist. I’ve gotta try that next time!

  7. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    yum! ☺️

  8. 3 stars
Avocado turns brown fast though… do you stir it in right away? I tried something similar and it looked sad after 10 minutes.

My kids loved it! Great recipe, and easy to make.

Not worth the hype. It’s just pasta with guacamole smeared on it. 🤷‍♂️

  11. User avatar Nohemi McKenzie says:

    2 stars
Eh, avocado in hot pasta sounds kinda weird. Maybe with shrimp it’s better, but I’m not convinced.

  12. User avatar anneliese.wuckert62 says:

I’m not even a pasta person, but this changed my mind. Simplicity at its best!

  13. 5 stars
Y’all, this is legit my new favorite recipe! My kids gobbled it up. Thank you sooo much!

  14. User avatar beata.keeling says:

The garlic + basil combo is my weakness. But 7 minutes for penne might be a little short depending on the brand—I’d start checking early. Still, sounds tasty!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree on checking early—penne timing varies a lot. I usually taste at 6 minutes and it’s perfect. Garlic + basil really does something special though.

    2. 2 stars
Avocado pasta sounds kinda weird to me, not gonna lie. Also 7 minutes? My penne woulda been crunchy lol. I’d cook it longer and maybe add more garlic.

  15. User avatar hung.herman86 says:

    4 stars
This is one of those “healthy” pastas that actually tastes good. I used whole wheat penne and it held up. Great for a quick weeknight meal.

  16. User avatar Deep Thought says:

    3 stars
I don’t know… avocado and pasta? Sounds weird! But maybe I’ll give it a try. Not sure about the shrimp though.

Pasta is best with meat sauce! Don’t know why people mess with avocados. But it looks good anyway.

  18. User avatar shanta.kemmer1981 says:

Avocados rotting in my kitchen so I tried this. Wasn’t bad! 🤷‍♂️

  19. User avatar julio.shanahan97 says:

    2 stars
Eh, not for me. The avocados turned brown too fast and it just looked unappetizing.

  20. 4 stars
Weird combination, pasta and avocado? But I must say, it surprisingly works. 🤷‍♀️

  21. 2 stars
I don’t understand how avocado and pasta go together. Just sounds weird to me. Maybe I’m just too traditional.

  22. User avatar marcelino.price says:

    2 stars
IDK if I should trust this. Pasta should be with red sauce, not green mushy stuff!

  23. User avatar babara.labadie35 says:

    2 stars
Nope. Too avocado-y. Like, I could’ve just eaten toast with avocado. Also 7 minutes didn’t make my penne al dente—I had to cook longer.

  24. 5 stars
Tried this with shrimp, and it was such a hit at dinner! Will make again! 😍

    1. User avatar Ilban Richese says:

I made something similar and it was soooo good. Pro tip: salt the pasta water well. Also add lemon if you have it to keep the avocado from tasting flat.

    1. User avatar Alia Atreides says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—salted pasta water is everything. I also tried a squeeze of lemon once and it made the avocado taste way more lively instead of kinda… flat.

  27. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
Honestly, this was a flop for me. The texture of the avocados just wasn’t right with pasta, I dunno.

  28. User avatar doreen.aufderhar59 says:

    5 stars
This sounds bright and fresh! I love avocado in pasta—kinda creamy without needing a heavy sauce.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! Avocado really does make it creamy without the heaviness. I’m definitely trying this—love the bright tomato + basil combo. Did you add the avocado while the pasta is still warm so it kind of clings together?

  29. User avatar jamey.kuhlman3 says:

    5 stars
Shrimp optional is a great idea. I made it with shrimp and it tasted restaurant-y. Would make again for sure.

    1. 4 stars
shrimp optional?? i mean why not lol. i’m gonna try it. hope my basil doesn’t turn black tho

    2. User avatar michell.ward says:

      5 stars
I totally agree—shrimp takes this from “good” to restaurant-y real fast. Did you season the shrimp before adding?

  30. User avatar glendora.rau13 says:

    5 stars
Deliciousness level over 9000!! 🍝🥑 Can’t stop eating it!

  31. User avatar Vennie Howe says:

    3 stars
Too much garlic for my taste. I’ll do hald next time.

  32. User avatar brenton.christiansen39 says:

    2 stars
Uhhh…are you supposed to use ripe avocados? Mine were hard and it didn’t turn out great. 😕

  33. User avatar frances.oreilly97 says:

    5 stars
I added chicken instead of shrimp and it was fire!!!

  34. User avatar ofelia.corwin52 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t expect avocado + pasta to work, but the garlic/tomato/basil combo makes sense. Super quick weeknight vibes.

  35. User avatar dean.dubuque says:

    5 stars
Absolutely love this recipe! Super creamy and fresh. Didn’t even need the shrimp, the avocados were enough!

  36. User avatar richie.macgyver93 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! The garlic and basil smell incredible. I added a little lemon and it turned out super creamy.

  37. User avatar tora.friesen61 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good but my avocado turned a little brown. Next time I’ll mix it in after the pasta cools more and add salt earlier. Still, it was tasty and felt fancy for how quick it is.

  38. User avatar jaime.crona says:

    2 stars
I didn’t love it. The avocados got brown too quickly. Might stick to regular pesto.

  39. User avatar Nichole Orn V says:

    3 stars
Avocado pasta feels kinda risky lol. But I’ll admit the timing—cooling slightly before mixing—probably matters so it doesn’t turn gross. Will try once.

  40. 4 stars
The ingredient list is simple and that’s why I like it. No weird spices—just good produce.

  41. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about avocado in pasta, but wow. The texture was creamy without being heavy. Next time I’ll add more garlic though.

  42. User avatar viola.murazik says:

    3 stars
I tried it, and it came out okay. The avocado gets a little mushy if you let it sit. Next time I’ll toss right away and not let it sit too long.

  43. User avatar reynaldo.keeling17 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for a summer meal! I love the fresh ingredients.

  44. User avatar anneliese.mcdermott says:

    2 stars
Not sure this will work. Avocado should be mashed with pasta water, not just sliced—unless it’s supposed to melt. idk. 😅

  45. User avatar rebbecca.brekke says:

    5 stars
Easy recipe! I can make it with stuff I have at home! Yum!

  46. User avatar Blitzcrank says:

    5 stars
Are you kidding? This is delish! 👏 Perfect for a hot day.

  47. User avatar regena.roberts43 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added shrimp and it was delish. Fresh basil really made it pop! 😋

  48. User avatar Harold Johnson says:

    5 stars
This was amazing! I loved the creaminess of the avocado. Will definitely make again.

  49. User avatar ernest.schuster83 says:

    4 stars
I tried something similar and it was good, but my avocado got a little weird/soft. Not sure if chilling or more oil helps. Still excited to test this version!

    1. User avatar wilfred.bartoletti70 says:

      5 stars
Oof, soft avocado can happen fast—especially with hot pasta. I usually toss the pasta first, let it cool a couple minutes, then add avocado right at the end (and only a light drizzle of olive oil). Chilling helps too, but too much oil might make it mushy. Can’t wait to hear how your shrimp version turns out!

  50. User avatar myong.marquardt24 says:

    5 stars
5 stars! Easy and fast. My kids ate it and ask for more—tho they called it guac noodles lol.

  51. User avatar kimberly.glover39 says:

    1 star
How is this pasta? I tried it but it felt like salad. Where’s the real flavor at?

  52. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! This dish is so creamy and simple. I added some parmesan on top, and it was a hit!

  53. User avatar jc.kunde75 says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have basil, so used parsley instead. I think it was fine, but not the same. 🤔

  54. User avatar Snow Bear says:

    4 stars
Can you use any other type of pasta? I’m not a fan of penne. Might try with spaghetti?

    1. User avatar ryan.hessel5 says:

      3 stars
I dunno, spaghetti might be too slippery for this. Penne grabs the sauce better. But if you like it, go for it!

    2. User avatar lenora.hermiston48 says:

      5 stars
Absolutely, spaghetti would work great! Just adjust the cooking time a little since it might need a minute more.

  55. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
Wait, only 7 minutes for penne? That seems short unless it’s truly al dente target. Maybe my pasta brand needs more time.

  56. User avatar angelena.kuhic48 says:

    3 stars
Step 4 says let it cool slightly but then where do you cook/mix the garlic and tomatoes? Feels incomplete to me. Still, I’m intrigued.

  57. 4 stars
I tried something like this once—my avocado turned kinda brown fast. You might want to add lemon or do it right away. But flavor should be great.

    1. 5 stars
Great point about the browning—lemon (or lime) helps a lot with avocados. I usually toss the sliced avocado with a little lemon juice right after slicing. Flavor-wise this sounds awesome, especially with the garlic + basil.

    2. 3 stars
I think avocado in pasta can go weird if it sits too long. Also, 7 minutes for penne at that size feels short? Maybe depends. If you add avocado too early it get mushy… but if you fold it in at the end, should work.

  58. User avatar louie.brown says:

    4 stars
Shrimp optional is smart. I used cooked shrimp and it came out really tasty. The only thing is the avocados get mushy if you don’t cool the pasta enough.

    1. User avatar irwin.herzog says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—shrimp optional makes it way more versatile. I used cooked shrimp too and it hit the spot. And yes, avocados are dramatic… too much heat and they turn to mash.

    2. User avatar Mr. Carlton Kub says:

      4 stars
I actually didn’t cool mine enough (busy life 😅) and mine got mushy. Next time I’ll cool the pasta more or add avocado right at the end. Still tasted good though.

  59. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

    1 star
Hard pass, not my thing. 👎

  60. User avatar elliot.rolfson says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the instructions kinda cut off? Like… where do you add the tomatoes, garlic, and oil? I had to freestyle. I still ate it though.

  61. User avatar Spriggan says:

    5 stars
I substituted the penne for spaghetti and it still tasted great! 😁

    1. User avatar Winsom Cash says:

      5 stars
Nice twist! I think spaghetti would actually be yummy too! 😋

  62. User avatar lucky777 says:

    4 stars
I made something similar once and it was amazing. The basil at the end is a must—makes it taste expensive.

  63. User avatar claud.willms12 says:

    3 stars
Too much garlic for my taste. Next time, maybe just 2 cloves? But the avocado idea is cool!

    1. User avatar courtney.kirlin69 says:

      4 stars
I think more garlic makes it tastier! But yeah, everyone has different tastes. Can’t wait to try the avocado part out! 🥑

    2. User avatar emogene.hirthe1987 says:

      3 stars
Nah, the garlic is what makes flavor pop! Less garlic is for buns! But I get it. Avocados are cool. Will try! 😊

  64. 4 stars
Are you serious? Pasta with avocado? Sounds weird but I gave it a try and it’s actually really good!

    1. User avatar MrsLucyG says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical at first too, but it’s surprisingly creamy! Who would’ve thought? I’m glad you liked it!

  65. 1 star
Dude I tried this and my kids hated it! Stick to mac and cheese! 😂

    1. 3 stars
Mac and cheese is the best! But I think avocado pasta might be an adult thing. 😂

    2. User avatar lizette.bednar57 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Kids can be picky eaters. Have you tried leaving out the tomatoes? 🤔

  66. User avatar Shirley Knot says:

    2 stars
Not sure about avocado + penne. I feel like it could be too mushy? Also the ingredient list doesn’t say how much olive oil or salt—kinda vague.

    1. User avatar anderson.romaguera81 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean—avocado can go mushy if it’s too ripe or if you mash it while it’s still hot. I’d keep it chunky and mix it with the pasta after it’s only slightly warm. Also yeah, the oil/salt being vague is annoying, but I usually start with like 2–3 tbsp olive oil and salt to taste. Came out good for me with shrimp too.

  67. User avatar doretha.balistreri1977 says:

    5 stars
The shrimp optional part is clutch. I used cooked shrimp and it felt like a restaurant dish. Only downside: it disappears fast in my house 😅

  68. User avatar kiesha.ratke68 says:

    3 stars
My first attempt I used too much salt “lightly sprinkled” is a lie lol. Next time I’ll go gentler. Flavor still good.

  69. User avatar krysta.windler says:

    4 stars
Simple and quick! I added some feta cheese and it was yum! 🧀

  70. 5 stars
I made it and it was actually really good. I added a squeeze of lemon and it tasted way fresher than expected.

  71. 2 stars
The instructions only go to step 4, so like… what do I do after it’s in the bowl? I’m confused.

  72. User avatar rafael.hansen41 says:

    2 stars
Avocado pasta feels kinda sus to me, not gonna lie. Like, why not just use butter/cream? But maybe it works.

  73. User avatar lashell.williamson says:

    2 stars
No directions for cooking the shrimp or combining everything—so I’m guessing. I like the idea, but the recipe feels incomplete.

  74. User avatar loida.cummings88 says:

    5 stars
This was surprisingly good! I added some red pepper flakes for a kick.

    1. User avatar octavio.thompson14 says:

      5 stars
Red pepper flakes? That’s a great idea! I’ll have to try that next time!

  75. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
Not what I expected. But healthy! I feel like I’m eating salad with noodles.

  76. 3 stars
It was pretty good but I found it hard to mix the avocados with the pasta, they keep slipping off. Maybe mash them next time?

  77. User avatar sheridan.jast says:

    2 stars
This is so “healthy” it hurts 😂. Avocado pasta kinda tastes like salad’s cousin. I needed more seasoning—pepper, maybe chili flakes.

    1. 5 stars
😂 Totally get that—avocado can be kinda “subtle.” I usually add lots more salt than you’d think, plus lemon juice and black pepper. Chili flakes are a great move too.

  78. User avatar robby.kihn30 says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but it turned out kinda bland. Maybe more salt or some cheese would help?

  79. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

    3 stars
Can this be made vegan?? Like swap the pasta with zoodles? Just asking!

  80. User avatar caridad.kilback93 says:

    3 stars
I think the recipe is missing something like cheese or lemon juice. Too bland.

    1. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      5 stars
I totally get that! A bit of cheese or a squeeze of lemon can really elevate the flavor. I usually add Parmesan to mine, it’s so good!
