Basic Fruit Jam Without Pectin

October 6, 2023

Why Fruit Jam without Pectin is Popular

Fruit jam without pectin has gained popularity among cooking enthusiasts and health-conscious individuals. This alternative method of making jam utilizes the natural pectin found in fruits, resulting in a delicious spread without the need for added pectin.

Health Benefits of Fruit Jam without Pectin

Fruit jam is a beloved spread for toast, biscuits, and desserts, but not all jams are created equal. When made without commercial pectin, fruit jam can offer a more natural and wholesome option for those looking to enjoy sweetness with fewer additives. While it’s still a sugary treat, fruit jam without pectin has a few surprising benefits that make it worth considering.

The first advantage comes from the simplicity of ingredients. Traditional jams rely on fruit, sugar, and time – not added thickeners. Many commercial pectins contain preservatives or are derived from citrus fruits processed with chemicals. By skipping pectin, you keep the jam closer to its natural form. You’re essentially reducing unnecessary additives and relying on the fruit’s own pectin content, which is usually enough when cooked slowly and properly.

Fruit jam without pectin is also an opportunity to lower your sugar intake. Commercial pectin often requires a high amount of sugar to activate its thickening properties. In contrast, pectin-free recipes can be adjusted to use less sugar or natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. This gives you better control over the sweetness and overall nutritional profile of the jam.

Because it’s less processed, homemade jam without pectin retains more of the fruit’s original nutrients. While cooking does break down some vitamins, minerals like potassium and antioxidants from berries or stone fruits often remain. You still get a dose of fiber from the fruit’s skins and pulp, especially if you’re not straining it too much.

Another benefit is flavor. Without commercial pectin setting the texture quickly, slow-cooked jams tend to develop a deeper, more concentrated fruit taste. The longer cooking process caramelizes some of the sugars naturally found in the fruit, adding richness and complexity to each bite.

In moderation, fruit jam without pectin can be part of a balanced diet. It’s a healthier alternative to overly processed spreads and a satisfying way to preserve summer fruit. When paired with whole-grain bread or stirred into yogurt, it adds flavor, a touch of sweetness, and a bit of nutrition, no artificial thickeners required.

Keeping the Recipe Simple

One of the great advantages of this basic fruit jam recipe is its simplicity. With just a few ingredients and easy-to-follow steps, anyone can create this delicious homemade jam. No specialized equipment or extensive cooking skills are required, making it accessible for beginners and experienced cooks alike.

Whether you’re looking for a healthier alternative to store-bought jams or want to try your hand at homemade preserves, this basic fruit jam recipe without pectin is a fantastic option. Enjoy the natural flavors of fresh fruits and the satisfaction of creating your own delicious spread!

    Easy peasy. Yum. 🍓

    1. 3 stars
Hmm I tried something like this but mine didn’t get thick—maybe I didn’t simmer long enough? Still tasty though.

    2. User avatar huong.purdy80 says:

      5 stars
Right?! The “no pectin” part is the best—so easy and it still sets up nice. 🍓

  2. User avatar art.weissnat says:

    4 stars
I like that it’s basically fruit + sugar. I added a squeeze of lemon and it tasted brighter. Will do again.

  3. User avatar lane.hegmann says:

    3 stars
Uhm, isn’t this kinda too much sugar? I thought jam was supposed to be healthier. :/

    1. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean about the sugar, but fruits have their own natural sugars too! It’s all about balance, right?

  4. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
Pretty simple, but 20-30 minutes wasn’t enough for me. I kept going until it coated the spoon. Also, “fresh fruits” is vague—mine needed extra sugar.

  5. 3 stars
Not sure about this… Jam without pectin? Sounds fishy. Is it really gonna be thick enough?

  6. User avatar dorothea.waters says:

    2 stars
Just sugar and fruit?? Like how is that even possible? Are you sure it won’t mold fast?

    1. 4 stars
Yes, it’s just sugar and fruit! The sugar helps preserve it, and if you keep it refrigerated, it shouldn’t mold quickly. I’ve made it before, and it turned out great!

  7. 5 stars
This recipe is super easy! My kids loved helping me mash the fruits. Will make again!

  8. 3 stars
Fruit jam? Never heard of it, sounds silly. Why not just buy it from the store?

  9. User avatar Roseline Breitenberg says:

    5 stars
World’s simplest jam. I used a mix of strawberries and raspberries and it tastes like summer. Love it.

  10. User avatar cordie.goldner says:

    4 stars
Wont this mold if I don’t use pectin? My grandma always used pectin.

  11. 3 stars
Is it really 2 cups sugar for 4 cups fruit? Seems like a lot… I used a bit less and it still tasted good, but the set wasn’t as firm.

  12. User avatar Kieth Kuvalis says:

    2 stars
I think 2 cups sugar for 4 cups fruit is kinda too sweet. Next time I’ll cut it down a bit and see.

  13. User avatar onie.steuber says:

    4 stars
Mine didn’t really thicken until I cooked it way longer than 30 minutes. Tasted amazing though, just patience needed.

    1. 5 stars
That makes sense! Without pectin, it can take longer for the fruit to reduce and thicken. Glad it still tasted amazing though—patience is definitely the key.

    2. User avatar vicente.bailey86 says:

      4 stars
Mine never thickened at 30 min either. I think it depends on how juicy the fruit is. I ended up simmering more like 45 and it finally set—so you’re not alone.

  14. User avatar chuck.reynolds5 says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and mine came out kind of runny 😕. Maybe my fruits were too watery? Not sure.

    1. 4 stars
That sounds frustrating 😕 Yeah, watery fruit is probably the culprit. I usually cook it a bit longer until it really coats the spoon.

  15. 3 stars
Could you can it instead of refrigerate? I tried once with no pectin and it didn’t last long. Might be user error.

  16. User avatar darrell.rutherford99 says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy, and I like that there’s no pectin. Mine was a little runny at first, but after cooling overnight it set better than expected.

    1. User avatar kathrine.schumm13 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—no pectin is the way to go. Mine usually takes a little time to gel too, so “cool overnight” makes total sense.

    2. User avatar fernando.schinner says:

      4 stars
Runny first is normal, I think. I followed it once and it firmed up in the fridge. Maybe I didn’t simmer long enough though.

  17. User avatar natashia.stanton2010 says:

    5 stars
This jam is sooo good! I used strawberries and blueberries, and it’s perfect. Thanks!

    1. User avatar alta.senger95 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you loved it! I tried it with raspberries and it was awesome too!

    2. User avatar stevie.wunsch says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but isn’t it too sweet? I think I might try less sugar next time.

  18. User avatar adam.bailey71 says:

    5 stars
This jam is delish! I added some lemon juice for a zesty kick.

    1. 5 stars
Sounds amazing! I’ve never tried adding lemon juice before. I bet it really brightens the flavor! Can’t wait to make this.

  19. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    5 stars
Made this with mostly strawberries and it turned out great—thick, jammy, and super fragrant. I simmered closer to 35 minutes because mine was wetter, but that was probably my fruit. Will do again!

  20. User avatar jeffrey.thompson94 says:

    3 stars
Why refrigerate only? I boiled it so it should last longer, right? Idk, I’m a little nervous about food safety. I’ll still store it in the fridge though.

  21. User avatar mauro.krajcik says:

    5 stars
Wow. Just jam. No pectin, no drama. I used frozen berries and it still worked—just needed extra simmering to get the right thickness.

    1. User avatar hertha.hegmann55 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love that it actually thickened without pectin. I simmered a bit longer like you said and it turned out jammy and not watery. Thanks for the tip!

    2. User avatar renato.stiedemann1 says:

      4 stars
Huh, I tried pectin once and it was always kinda weird to me. This seems way more straightforward. Frozen berries though—good to know. How long did you simmer yours to get it thick enough?

  22. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

    4 stars
No pectin? bold choice lol. It worked for me though. Just keep stirring so it doesn’t stick.

  23. User avatar keven.powlowski says:

    3 stars
Not bad at all, but my jam stayed kind of runny. I followed the timing, maybe my heat was too low? Next time I’ll cook it a bit longer or mash more.

  24. 3 stars
The proportions seem simple, but 4 cups fruit to 2 cups sugar is a lot of sugar. Still good, just very sweet for my taste.

    1. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—it’s simple ratios, but 2 cups sugar to 4 cups fruit definitely makes it sweet. I like it, but I can see how it would be too much for some.

  25. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

    4 stars
This is great for beginners. I followed it exactly and it tastes clean and sweet. The hardest part was waiting for it to cool.

  26. User avatar tyisha.oconnell40 says:

    5 stars
This jam recipe is super easy and turned out delicious. I used all strawberries and it’s perfect on toast!

  27. 2 stars
I dunno, it didn’t turn out like I hoped. Too runny for me, maybe I cooked it wrong?

  28. User avatar jerrell.gutmann87 says:

    5 stars
This jam is AMAZING! I used strawberries and blueberries. So sweet and delicious! Will def make again!

  29. User avatar christa.gusikowski1985 says:

    5 stars
Made this with strawberry-only and it actually thickened nicely. I stirred more often after it started bubbling and the texture was great—like a spread, not soup.

  30. User avatar leland.jerde says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, it tastes good but it’s more like fruit spread than jam. Still, on toast it’s awesome. Maybe I just under-boiled it.

  31. 1 star
This didn’t work for me! I think I need a real recipe with pectin or something.

  32. User avatar stanford.marquardt says:

    3 stars
Followed the steps exactly, but mine stayed a little runny. Maybe I didn’t simmer long enough? Still tastes great though.

    1. User avatar mandie.herman12 says:

      5 stars
I think you nailed the likely cause—if it stayed a bit runny, it probably needed a few more minutes simmering. Mine always thickens more once it cools down too. Next time, try going closer to 30 minutes (or stir more often).

  33. User avatar hippopotamus says:

    2 stars
Followed the steps but it got burnt at the bottom. 😡 Too much sugar maybe?

    1. User avatar donte.bauch34 says:

      4 stars
It sounds like you might have cooked it a bit too long or had the heat too high. Sometimes that can cause burning, even if the sugar amount is right. Don’t give up!

  34. 1 star
Is it okay to use frozen fruits? I really have no fresh ones. Help!

  35. 5 stars
This jam is so easy to make! I used strawberries and it turned out delicious. Thank you!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad to hear that! I love how simple jam can be. Strawberries are a great choice!

  36. User avatar bennett.monahan says:

    1 star
Not sure how you can just let it sit for 10 mins and get juice. Sounds fishy to me.

    1. 5 stars
It may seem strange, but letting the fruits sit really helps draw out their natural juices! It’s all about that sugar magic. 😊

  37. User avatar percy.cremin2004 says:

    5 stars
Made this today with mostly strawberries and it actually thickened nicely. No pectin needed—love that. I did simmer a little longer than 30 minutes, but it was worth it.

  38. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about “no pectin,” but it turned out pretty well. Mine gelled best after 30+ minutes. Next time I’ll chop smaller for faster thickening.

  39. User avatar Anju's Mother says:

    2 stars
Wasn’t impressed. The sugar was too much for my taste, and it didn’t set well. Not sure I’ll make this again.

  40. User avatar sherwood.barton says:

    5 stars
Easy peasy! Made it with my kids and we had a blast. Definitely making more!

  41. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    5 stars
Easy-peasy and taste good! My kids helped make it and they love it! 🍓❤️

  42. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
Amazing!!! Best jam I ever have eaten in my life, gonna make for my fam at home!

  43. 4 stars
I thought 20-30 minutes would be enough, but mine took closer to 45. Still turned out great though—just be patient and don’t walk away.

    1. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

      5 stars
Good call on patience—mine always runs long too. I think fruit size/juice level really changes the timing. Glad it still turned out great!

  44. 4 stars
Yesss! Finally made jam without any weird ingredients! Simple and tasty.

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      2 stars
But… isn’t jam supposed to have pectin? How does it even thicken without it?

    2. User avatar scotty.bednar says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love how simple it is. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  45. User avatar fritz.ritchie58 says:

    2 stars
Really? You don’t need pectin? I heard that’s essential for jam to set. Not sure if this will work.

  46. User avatar bud.keeling69 says:

    5 stars
5 stars!! Also I was like ‘do I really need to boil?’ Yes. Boil. Thick. Done. My kids ate it straight out of the jar.

  47. User avatar tora.parisian42 says:

    2 stars
Why do you need to let the fruit sit? Doesn’t make sense to me. I just cooked everything together.

    1. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

      2 stars
I don’t get it either. Just seems like a waste of time. Jam is jam, right?

    2. 5 stars
Letting the fruit sit helps to draw out the juices, which makes the jam taste better! Cooking everything at once can lead to a different texture and flavor.

  48. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

    2 stars
My jam didn’t set at all even after 35 minutes 😩 maybe I didn’t boil hard enough? Also “medium heat” is too vague. Flavor was okay but texture was sad.

  49. 3 stars
My jar lids popped, so I thought it was gonna be shelf-stable lol. But it’s refrigerate only, right? Still yummy!

  50. User avatar adelina.runte44 says:

    5 stars
This is a great recipe! I love how easy it is. My kids helped out too!

  51. 5 stars
Easy instructions! My kids helped and it turned out great! Can’t believe we made this ourselves!

    1. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

      2 stars
I don’t know if it was that easy…I tried it and it didn’t turn out right. Maybe I did something wrong?

    2. User avatar donovan.schoen48 says:

      5 stars
That sounds fantastic! Love that your kids got involved. Making jam is such a fun project!

  52. User avatar dennis.dietrich75 says:

    5 stars
    Yum! 😋 Easy recipe

    1. User avatar dahlia.pagac55 says:

      5 stars
This looks so doable! I love that it’s no-pectin—just fruit and sugar. Can’t wait to try it with blueberries 😋

    2. User avatar robert.morar1963 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I tried something similar once and it didn’t really thicken. Do you have to boil it long enough or will it set in the fridge even if it seems runny?

  53. 4 stars
“Let sit for 10 minutes” is the step that saves it. The boil step looks scary at first but once it thickens it’s fine. I’d recommend labeling jars—future-you will thank you.

  54. User avatar gregory.beahan66 says:

    3 stars
My jam never truly “thickened,” and I think boiling for only 20 minutes wasn’t enough. I like it, but it’s more like a fruit spread than jam.

  55. User avatar dinorah.leffler62 says:

    2 stars
I tried this but it didn’t thicken at all! What did I do wrong? Anyone else have this problem?

    1. 4 stars
Maybe you didn’t let it simmer long enough? That can happen. Try more time next time!

  56. User avatar ambrose.lubowitz61 says:

    2 stars
Meh. Not what I expected. Maybe I’ll just buy jam next time. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

      4 stars
I thought it was pretty straightforward! Maybe just try mixing the fruits differently next time? 🤔

  57. User avatar tressie.mohr2005 says:

    4 stars
Kind of skeptical about “just simmer and it thickens” but wow, it actually worked. I used a strawberry/raspberry mix and it tastes like summer.

  58. User avatar victor.swift17 says:

    4 stars
Just made it but used blackberries instead. It was awesome! Yum yum!

    1. User avatar elton.auer1985 says:

      5 stars
Blackberries sound like a great twist! I’ll have to try that next time. Glad you liked it!

    2. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      2 stars
I dunno, can you really call it jam if it’s not strawberries? Just seems weird to me.

  59. User avatar calvin.johns59 says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out a little runny even after 30 minutes. I think my fruit was too juicy? Still tasty though. Maybe I needed to use higher heat or boil longer.

  60. User avatar Johnny Bosco says:

    5 stars
I love this recipe! Jam making is so much fun! 🍓🎉

    1. User avatar don.kerluke1961 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Making jam is so satisfying, especially when you get to eat it later. 🍓😋

  61. User avatar carrol.bins97 says:

    3 stars
I think “4 cups fruit” is a little vague—mine were very juicy and it took way longer to thicken. Still tasty though, just more like a spread than jam.

  62. User avatar dan.nitzsche says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and mine never really thickened. The berries were watery I guess? Next time I’ll mash more and cook longer. Kinda disappointing.

    1. User avatar jamison.lakin30 says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry—jam can be so frustrating. With no pectin, you really need to reach a proper simmer and keep cooking until it coats a spoon. Mashing + longer cooking makes sense.

  63. User avatar Random Dent says:

    3 stars
I wish the instructions were more detailed. I’m not that good in the kitchen. 😬

  64. 5 stars
    Simple. No drama. Worked.

    1. User avatar Dr. Elene Bashirian says:

      5 stars
Worked for me too—set it and simmered. Nice and simple, no weird extra steps.

    2. User avatar jadwiga.tillman1997 says:

      3 stars
I tried this but mine never got super thick. I simmered like 20 min… maybe I needed longer? Still tastes good though.

  65. User avatar lorri.lubowitz48 says:

    5 stars
Made this with all strawberries and it set up way better than I expected. Super simple—no pectin panic. Thanks!

  66. User avatar rosia.rowe27 says:

    5 stars
I’m not a jam expert but this was better than store-bought for sure. Used a mix of berries, and it smells amazing while it boils.

  67. User avatar treasa.lueilwitz60 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and mine was still kinda runny. Maybe my strawberries were super juicy or I didn’t simmer long enough. Still tastes good on toast!

    1. User avatar berna.quitzon64 says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—“runny but tasty” usually means it just needs a bit more simmer time. Juicier fruit (or riper strawberries) can thin it out. Did it hit a really steady boil before you dropped to low?

  68. 5 stars
Yummy!!! Can’t believe how simple it was. Made it with my kids and they loved it!

  69. User avatar mikel.schuppe73 says:

    5 stars
5 stars! Best jam I ever made, tastes like summer in a jar! 🍓🍇

This recipe? 10/10. Perfect for breakfast on toast! Can’t get enough.

  71. User avatar maxima.johns says:

    5 stars
Yummy!!! Just like grandma used to make!

    1. User avatar kristyn.nader63 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Nothing beats grandma’s recipes. I love this jam too!

    2. User avatar Queen Ambi says:

      3 stars
I don’t know about that. You sure it tastes just like hers? I think it might be different.

  72. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, the instructions are kinda vague—like how thick is “thickened”? Also, 10 minutes for juice release didn’t seem like enough for my berries.

  73. User avatar eldridge.hessel11 says:

    3 stars
I think 2 cups sugar for 4 cups fruit is a lot? Mine turned out super sweet, but still good on toast. Next time I’ll try less sugar.

  74. 5 stars
This is exactly what I needed—simple and no pectin chaos. Mine thickened closer to 30 minutes and it set great after chilling.

  75. 5 stars
Turned out really good—nice and thick after simmering. I used frozen berries and added a couple extra minutes, worked great.

  76. User avatar dalila.schulist1968 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about “without pectin” but the fruit + sugar combo worked. The taste is super fresh. Next time I’ll cook it maybe 5 minutes longer for a firmer set.

  77. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
This is the first jam that actually tastes like real fruit and not overly sweet. Loved the ratio.

    1. User avatar maranda.ohara says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I tried this with strawberries and it came out super fruity. Not that candy-sweet stuff. The ratio is perfect.

    2. User avatar russell.hoppe78 says:

      4 stars
I’m surprised it thickened without pectin, but mine did after simmering longer than the time. Tastes legit—though I might’ve used a bit less sugar next time.

  78. User avatar sebastian.dicki9 says:

    4 stars
Super simple recipe. I was worried about “no pectin,” but the strawberries still set nicely in the fridge. Would make again.

  79. User avatar angelica.denesik84 says:

    4 stars
Who needs pectin anyway? This is simple and perfect. I added a splash of lemon juice for a zing! 🌟

  80. 1 star
Eh, I guess it’s okay. Just tasted like sweet gooey stuff. Not for me.

    1. User avatar marcel.miller says:

      5 stars
I think it’s delicious! Maybe you just don’t like jam? Try it on toast, it’s amazing!

    2. User avatar Jay Walker says:

      3 stars
Seems like you’re not into sweet stuff. But fruit jam is supposed to be a bit gooey, right? I love it!

  81. User avatar jere.pagac45 says:

    2 stars
I followed all the steps but my jam didn’t thicken. What did I do wrong?

  82. User avatar Miss Renate Jerde says:

    5 stars
Made this last weekend—so easy. The 20–30 min simmer really does the trick. Super tasty on toast!

  83. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    5 stars
So sweet and tasty! Love how simple this is. Best jam I’ve made! 👍

  84. User avatar keven.dietrich4 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, this jam didn’t come out thick enough. What did I do wrong? 🤔

  85. 5 stars
Tried this with a mix of strawberries and blueberries—came out super flavorful. I simmered closer to 30 minutes and it finally thickened nicely. Will make again!

    1. User avatar Dr. Mundo says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Mixing berries sounds like the sweet spot—more flavor layers for sure. And yep, simmering nearer 30 minutes usually does the trick.

  86. User avatar basementDweller says:

    2 stars
Attempted this but it burned at the bottom. Should have watched it more closely. Blame me!

  87. User avatar leonel.kuphal45 says:

Simple and surprisingly good. I added a squeeze of lemon at the end and it helped the flavor pop. Next time I’ll cook a tiny bit longer for a firmer set.

This was alright, but I think the whole boiling process is a bit too long. My fruits lost their shape. 🤷‍♂️

Five stars because it’s cheap and easy. Also my kids ate it before it even cooled… so yeah, it’s good.

Delicious! 10/10 for toast. Jam texture was perfect right after chilling.

    1. User avatar mathWizard says:

      3 stars
I dunno, I followed it but mine never really thickened for me. Maybe my fruit was too watery? Still tasted okay though.

So glad you liked it! That “perfect right after chilling” texture is the best part—thanks for the 10/10 toast endorsement 😊

Is it really jam without pectin? I thought it was a must-have. 🤔

    1. User avatar kimberlee.quitzon1 says:

      4 stars
I always thought pectin was necessary too, but this recipe seems legit. Guess it’s worth a try!

    2. User avatar milton.stehr says:

      5 stars
Yeah, you can make jam without pectin! The sugar helps it set too. Don’t worry too much about it! 😊

  92. 1 star
I tried this with random fruits in my fridge and it was a disaster! 😩

i have no fruits at home, can i just use fruit nesquik instead??

  94. User avatar andree.boyle7 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Just did it with cheap berries from the store and still came out fantastic. Fruit jam is life! 🍓❤️

  95. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

Not sure why people overcomplicate jam. This is straight-forward and delicious. The 10 min rest helped a lot.

  96. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

Not as thick as I hoped. Maybe I did something wrong, but it was kind of runny.

  97. User avatar joella.hackett says:

    5 stars
Tried this with a mix of strawberries and blueberries—turned out sweet and actually pretty thick. I didn’t have pectin so I was nervous, but the simmer time worked!

  98. 3 stars
I followed the recipe but my jam turned out too runny. What did I do wrong? 😩

  99. User avatar royal.koelpin says:

    5 stars
Honestly, I don’t get why people pay for jam. This is cheap, quick, and way better.

I burnt the bottom once because I forgot to stir 😭 but the rest came out good. Lesson learned: don’t walk away.

    1. User avatar crocodile says:

      5 stars
Oof, been there 😭 But honestly, that’s the whole jam-making lesson—stir and don’t wander. Glad the rest turned out good!

    2. User avatar shanelle.jast1961 says:

      4 stars
I mean… walking away is basically the #1 recipe ingredient 😅 Still, nice save on the jam. Did you stir right after it started simmering?

  101. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    5 stars
This jam recipe is so easy! I made it with strawberries and it turned out delicious. Just like grandma used to make! 😍

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! I love that it’s just like grandma’s. Can’t wait to try it myself! 😊

I tried this recipe with oranges and it didn’t work out as well. Dunno if fruits have to be similar? 🤔

  102. User avatar Ms. Thomas Bogisich says:

No pectin jams always seem sketchy to me. This one at least smells right, but mine looked cloudy and never firmed up much.

  103. User avatar geoWizard says:

    5 stars
This is the kind of recipe my grandma would love. Simple, no weird ingredients, just fruit + sugar. I like that it doesn’t try to be fancy.

  104. User avatar trudy.ziemann says:

    2 stars
Instructions are kinda basic (like, no mention of how thick is thick). I guessed, and it was okay. Would’ve liked a setting test.

    1. User avatar sanora.kilback1961 says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—“thickened” is super vague. Mine went from jammy to almost syrupy before I realized I needed to cook it a bit longer. Next time I’ll check the consistency more closely and maybe do a gel test.

  105. User avatar candida.littel40 says:

    3 stars
Mine came out more like fruit sauce than jam. I probably didn’t simmer long enough, but 20-30 min felt short. Still good on toast though.

    1. User avatar Draugr Scourge says:

      5 stars
That sounds exactly like the common “not enough simmer” issue. 20–30 min is a guide, but some berries just take longer—mine thickened closer to 35-40 depending on how juicy they were.

  106. 4 stars
I did it with mangoes and pineapple instead. Tasted weird but still edible! Gonna stick with strawberries next time.

  107. User avatar lexie.klein1995 says:

    3 stars
Too sweet for my taste. Next time I’ll cut the sugar a bit or use more berries that are less sweet. Still good though!

    1. 5 stars
Totally feel you—2 cups sugar is a lot. I usually do 1.5 cups and it still sets up nicely for me. 🍓

    2. 4 stars
Wait, I thought more berries would make it sweeter? But yeah I get it—some strawberries are like candy 😅

  108. User avatar Jerrod Huel says:

    3 stars
“Bring to a boil” is too vague. Boil how long? Also stirring occasionally is hard when you’re watching it like a hawk.

  109. User avatar jeff.bergstrom79 says:

    4 stars
My kids love it on toast. One thing though: 4 cups fruit + 2 cups sugar feels kinda sweet, but I guess that’s the point.

  110. 5 stars
This jam turned out fantastic! The flavors are so fresh and vibrant. Can’t wait to try it with other fruits.

    1. User avatar rocky.sporer6 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I love how you can mix different fruits for unique flavors!

    2. 2 stars
Sounds good, but how can you guarantee it won’t spoil without all that pectin? Seems risky to me.

  111. User avatar gavin.schinner67 says:

    2 stars
I followed the instructions and the jam didn’t set! What did I do wrong? I thought it needed more sugar?..

  112. User avatar fern.watsica75 says:

Yummy! I made it with a mix of berries and we’re loving it on our toast! 🥪

    1. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

      3 stars
I tried this recipe, but it turned out too sweet for my taste. Maybe I should’ve reduced the sugar? 🤔

    2. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! I love using different berries too! 😍

  113. User avatar rashad.kutch1956 says:

    4 stars
This seems too easy lol. Still, the result was actually jam and not just syrup. 8/10 would eat on toast again.

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      3 stars
I tried this and mine stayed super runny… maybe I didn’t simmer long enough? Also does it need pectin or something? Still tasted good though.

    2. User avatar maricela.schneider75 says:

      5 stars
Honestly I thought it would be more complicated too 😂 but my batch actually set up nice—def jam on toast, not just sweet syrup. Thanks!

  114. 4 stars
I tried it with raspberries and blueberries and it’s delicious. The texture is jammy, not jelly-like, which I like. Will repeat.

  115. User avatar lovella.pacocha says:

    2 stars
Mine crystallized a little? Like sugar bits on the bottom. I stirred, but maybe I should’ve brought it to a full rolling boil. Tasted fine though.

    1. User avatar sandy.cummerata87 says:

      4 stars
That “crystallized bits” sounds like sugar that didn’t fully dissolve before it thickened—totally plausible. A full rolling boil (and stirring at the beginning) usually helps, but if it tasted fine you’re still good!

    2. User avatar Falmer Shaman says:

      3 stars
I think you just under-boiled it. If the bottom had sugar chunks, that means it got too hot too fast in spots. Next time keep it at a real boil longer, then simmer. But hey—jam is jam 😄

  116. User avatar mariano.mccullough25 says:

    2 stars
Ok but do you can it? Refrigerate only sounds not safe long-term. I’m confused—jam isn’t shelf stable then?

  117. User avatar annett.kreiger says:

    2 stars
Not bad, but 2 cups sugar for 4 cups fruit seems a lot… I know sugar helps set, but it’s almost like strawberry syrup. Flavor is nice though.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, I get what you mean—2 cups sugar does sound like a lot. But since this is “no pectin,” the sugar is doing double duty for sweetness + thickening. I still cut it sometimes (like 1.5 cups) and it turns out more like a softer jam, more spreadable syrup vibes.

  118. 4 stars
Simple and easy! My kids loved it on toast. Will definitely make again.

  119. 3 stars
I followed this but mine ended up too runny. Maybe I shouldn’t have added extra sugar?

  120. User avatar lorri.west18 says:

    4 stars
I edited the sugar down to 1.5 cups, was still sweet and less calories maybe? Great jam anyway.

    1. User avatar mallie.donnelly87 says:

      3 stars
But is it still gonna be the same if u cut the sugar? I thought sugar helps it set? 🤔

    2. User avatar armando.kshlerin43 says:

      5 stars
That’s a smart move! Cutting sugar definitely makes it healthier, and the natural fruit sweetness comes through. Nice tweak!
