Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound dried black-eyed peas soaked overnight
  • 4 cups chicken broth or more as needed
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ham hock or smoked turkey leg
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Drain and rinse the soaked black-eyed peas.
  • In a large pot, combine the peas, chicken broth, onion, garlic, and ham hock.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, until the peas are tender.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Remove the ham hock, shred any meat from the bone, and return to the pot.
  • Serve hot as a main dish or side.
