Homemade dog treats are a fun, wholesome way to spoil your pup with something delicious that you can actually feel good about. Making them at home means you control every ingredient, from the flour you choose to the natural sweeteners and add ins that suit your dog’s taste and dietary needs. It’s a simple, satisfying project that turns everyday pantry items into tail wagging happiness.
Most homemade treats start with a basic dough made from whole wheat flour, oat flour, or even grain-free blends if your dog needs something gentler. From there, you can mix in favorites like peanut butter, pumpkin purée, sweet potato, banana, or shredded carrots. These natural ingredients add flavor, nutrients, and moisture without anything artificial. A touch of broth can bring the dough together, and you can shape the treats however you like, from classic bones to cute little hearts or simple squares.
One of the best things about baking dog treats is how customizable the process is. If your dog loves crunch, bake them a little longer until they become crispy snacks that store well for days. If they prefer soft chews, reduce the baking time to keep them tender. You can even freeze the dough or the finished treats to keep a batch ready for training sessions or daily rewards.
Homemade dog treats also make adorable gifts. Wrap a handful in a small jar or tin, add a ribbon, and you have a thoughtful present for fellow dog lovers. They’re perfect for birthdays, holidays, or just because you saw a cute cookie cutter and felt inspired.
Beyond the fun, these treats offer peace of mind. There are no mysterious additives, unnecessary fillers, or ingredients you can’t pronounce, only real food you trust. Your kitchen fills with the warm, nutty smell of peanut butter or pumpkin as they bake, and your pup will probably hover nearby, waiting not so patiently for the first taste.
Whether you’re baking to reward good behavior, celebrate a special day, or simply show your dog a little extra love, homemade treats are as heartwarming as they are practical. A few ingredients and a little time are all it takes to create snacks that are healthy, tasty, and guaranteed to earn you extra cuddles.

Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup peanut butter unsweetened and unsalted
- 2 large eggs preferably organic
- 1/4 cup water more if dough is too dry
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, peanut butter, and eggs. Mix until well combined.
- Add water a little at a time to help make the dough more workable, if needed.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for about 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown and firm.
- Allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog.
Totally failed this 😭. My dough wouldn’t roll out. Maybe I didn’t knead enough?
Bark bark! 🐶 My dog approves! Thanks for this awesome recipe!
Aww, that’s so cute! My pup loves these too! 🐕❤️
Quick and simple, but I used whole wheat flour and it didn’t smell too great when baking. Dog seemed fine tho!
Not sure why people rave about this; my dog just sniffed and walked away. 😒
These treats are super easy to make! However, my dough turned out kinda dry. Maybe I added too much flour? Will try again.
Yeah, that can happen! Just don’t pour in too much flour at once. Nice that you’re trying again!
I’m skeptical. How can homemade treats be better than store-bought? My dog’s picky too.
My dog absolutely loves these treats! I used all-purpose flour and they turned out perfect. 🐕❤️
Dunno why you’d make treats when you can just buy them. But hey, I guess it’s fun? 😕
I think making them is way better! You know exactly what’s in them. Plus, my dog loves ’em! 🐶❤️
5 stars for sure! Easy recipe and my dog can’t get enough! Gonna make more for friends’ pets.
I modified the recipe by adding some apple sauce and it was a hit! What a great base recipe. 🌟
My dog absolutely went bananas for these. I used all-purpose flour and added a tiny bit more water than the recipe said—perfect dough consistency. Goldens were slightly darker at 20 min but still great!
My dog is picky and usually sniffs and walks away. These were the only ones she actually chewed. Maybe I made them a bit thicker? Either way: yay.
Aww yay!! My pup is the same way—if it’s even a little off, they just sniff and leave. Love that you got her to actually chew them. Might try your thicker idea next time!
Pretty easy recipe. The dough was a bit dry at first, but adding a teaspoon of water at a time fixed it. Cut-outs baked up evenly.
Tasty?
I mean, it’s just flour and peanut butter, right? How good can they really be?
Yes, my dog loves them! They are always a hit at home!
So simple! I added a bit of honey too. Dogs go crazy for it, can’t wait to make more!
Hmm, can dogs really have honey? I thought it was bad for them. Not sure about this recipe…
That’s awesome! Honey sounds like a sweet addition. My pups loved these too! 🐶❤️
Okay, so I’m not a dog treat expert, but these seemed easy enough. I used all-purpose flour and they came out firm like the recipe said. My only gripe: rolling was a little sticky even with flour on the surface.
Ok recipe but mine got too dry even after adding water. I guess my peanut butter was thicker? Next time I’ll add a tiny bit more water from the start.
Yeah, that sounds like it could’ve been the peanut butter thickness. Mine does the same thing when I use a more natural PB—next time I’ll start with a splash of extra water too.
Actually… the oven at 350°F made them burn around the edges but raw in the center. Idk if my oven runs hot.
Yeah that sounds like your oven runs hot (or the rack position is off). Next time try 325°F and bake a few extra minutes, and rotate the tray halfway. Also make sure the dough isn’t thicker than ~1/4 inch.
Kinda skeptical about ‘firm’ at 20 minutes—every oven is different. I ended up doing about 22 minutes for my batch and that was perfect.
Seems kinda… risky? Like peanut butter + eggs is fine, but should you really be baking treats that long? Idk. I’ll probably stick to store-bought.
My dog loves these!! He can’t get enough. They smell great too. Thank you!
I don’t trust peanut butter treats—sometimes it’s got weird stuff in it. Also I don’t like giving eggs to dogs. Can someone confirm this is totally safe?
My pup went absolutely nuts for these. The dough was a little crumbly at first, but adding water a tablespoon at a time fixed it. Great simple recipe!
I followed it exactly and they turned out fine… until I realized my peanut butter was salted. My dog didn’t care, but I did 😅
My dog loves these! I even tried one myself and they tasted pretty good! 😂
I’m skeptical about peanut butter for dogs. Doesn’t it have stuff in it that’s bad? And 1/4 cup water seems random—my dough was dry at first. I’d be more comfortable with a vet-approved ingredient list.
I get the skepticism, but unsweetened, unsalted peanut butter is usually fine for dogs in moderation. The “bad stuff” is mostly about additives like xylitol (sugar-free PB). If it doesn’t say xylitol, you’re probably good.
That 1/4 cup water really is just a starting point—flour brands and how thick your peanut butter is will change things. Mine was dry too at first, so I added a splash more like the recipe says.
Not super easy to work with. The dough was kind of crumbly. I had to add a lot more water.
I had the same issue! I ended up using a little extra water too. It worked out in the end, but yeah, a bit tricky at first.
I used all-purpose flour and creamy peanut butter (oops—didn’t check unsalted). Still turned out fine, though slightly smellier. Definitely will make again but watch the bake time.
Why whole wheat? 😕 I think all-purpose would be better. Still—if your dog eats it, I guess it works.
Can confirm: 18 minutes was not enough for my oven. I had to keep them in closer to 22 until they were actually firm. Otherwise doughy.
I don’t think my dog liked it much. He sniffed and walked away. Maybe he just prefers store-bought snacks.
I tried rolling to 1/4 inch but it was thinner in spots. Some pieces got harder than others. Tasty regardless, just inconsistent.
Not sure about the peanut butter measurement—1/2 cup is a lot. Mine turned out a bit dry and crumbly, like dog biscuits from a store. Still, my pup ate them fast.
Five stars for the simplicity. Also, my dog’s trainer says treats like these are a win because you control the ingredients.
Better than the junk from the store. Plus, I know what’s in it. Thanks for sharing!
Just made these and they’re tasty… for me? Kidding 😅 My dog definitely prefers these warm—she sniffed the whole rack.
😂 “For me? Kidding” made me laugh. But also… if your dog is sniffing like that, I’m taking it as science.
I used all-purpose flour and creamy peanut butter. Smells amazing even though it’s for the dog. Bake time worked great for my batch.
Yay! Finally something healthy I can make for my pup! I used almond butter ’cause I didn’t have peanut butter. Still turned out good!
That’s awesome! I love seeing people get creative with ingredients. Almond butter is a great choice too! 🐶
Not sure about the peanut butter amount—mine stuck to everything even with flour. Next time I’ll grease the cutters or chill the dough longer.
5 stars. My beagle loved them and I loved not buying store treats 😄
Aww that’s awesome! 😄 My dog goes crazy for anything peanut butter too.
Same here—way better than those chalky store ones. Love that you know what’s in them.
These smell amazing while baking. I let them cool all the way like the recipe says and they firmed up nicely. My border collie approved.
My shapes didn’t hold—cookie cutters kinda smeared them. I think the dough needed to chill first, but the recipe didn’t mention that.
350°F is not my friend. Burned the edges on the first tray. Second tray I lowered to like 325 and they came out better. Just test your oven.
How many treats can this recipe make? I have a HUGE dog… like a horse lol!
How big is big? Like, I mean, you could just make them super big and only give a few at a time! That might work.
I’d guess this recipe could make around 20-30 treats, depending on how big you cut them! Just make sure to keep an eye on how much your big pup eats! 😂
Pretty easy recipe, only thing is my treats were a bit too dark at 20 minutes. Next time I’ll pull them at ~16-18.
I’m skeptical about raw peanut butter safety? Like, is it okay if it’s unsalted/unsweetened only? Mine were fine, but I worry.
I get the worry, but you’re baking these, so the raw peanut butter concern is mostly handled. Just make sure you’re not using spoiled peanut butter (smells “off” or tastes weird). If yours baked up golden and firm, you should be good.
Not sure about the thickness. 1/4 inch felt thick to me, so mine stayed chewy in the middle. Still ate them, but I’d roll thinner.
So simple! My pup is obsessed. Five stars!!
I followed it exactly and the dough was super sticky. Had to add extra flour and it got a little dry. Any tips?
Totally been there. Whole wheat flour especially can suck up moisture—next time try mixing a bit longer first, then only add water if the dough truly won’t come together. Also, chilling the dough 15–20 min can make it much less sticky.
My dog is *obsessed* with these. The dough was a little crumbly at first, but adding water slowly fixed it. Baked up golden and firm like the recipe says.
Idk, my dog just smells it and walks away. I’d give it a 3, the recipe seems fine but my dog is picky.
Super easy and great! I used almond butter instead of peanut butter ’cause my dog has allergy. Still turned out amazing! 🐶
First time making dog treats and it was super easy. I used all-purpose flour and organic eggs like suggested. Will make again!
That’s awesome—great job! 😊 Golden brown and firm sounds like the exact cue. I bet your pup is thrilled.
My dog went absolutely feral for these. I used all-purpose flour and it still came out great—nice and firm after cooling.
The instructions are super clear, but 18-20 minutes felt long for my oven. I pulled them at 16 and they were perfect—golden but not too hard.
This recipe is way too simple. How can this be enough for a dog’s diet?
Simple doesn’t mean it’s not nutritious! Dogs love peanut butter, and these treats are a good way to bond with your pet. Don’t underestimate what your dog can enjoy!
Wow, these were a hit at the dog park! Everyone wanted the recipe! Thanks!
I think adding some carrots would make it healthier. Just saying. 🥕
I followed it pretty closely, but the dough was super sticky at first. Once I added water (oops—actually I added more flour), it finally worked. The treats came out fine though, just not as “firm” as expected.
They just turned into a mushy blob! Something went wrong… 😩
Five stars! So easy and cheap. My dog ate one immediately and then stared at me like ‘make more’ 😭
My dog is obsessed with these—turned out golden and a little crunchy like the good stuff. I added just a splash more water and the dough was perfect.
That’s awesome! Golden + a little crunchy sounds exactly right. 🐶 Did you use whole wheat or all-purpose?
Heads up: whole wheat flour made the dough crack when rolling for me. Maybe I needed more water than the recipe says, but I ended up pressing them thicker.
Pretty good, but 18-20 min feels a bit long for smaller shapes—mine came out slightly darker than I expected. Still crunchy though, so no complaints.
These are way too simple—like, what about probiotics or something? Lol. Also, I think 1/4 inch is too thin; mine burned. Might try thicker next time.
I’m not sure about the peanut butter amount—mine tasted super strong (even for me). My dog ate them anyway though, so I guess win?
My pup absolutely loved these—golden, crunchy, and smelled like real peanut butter. I added a tiny bit more water because my dough was crumbly, but otherwise followed the steps. Will make again!
Just made these for my dog. Mine didn’t get super crunchy though—more like chewy. I baked closer to 18 min but maybe my oven runs cool?
Aww that’s awesome! 🐶 Golden and crunchy is exactly what I was aiming for. Glad the extra water helped—crumbly dough happens depending on peanut butter and egg size.
Not bad
I tried it and they turned out… kinda hard? Like jaw workout hard. Maybe I baked too long. Also, 350°F for 18-20 minutes maybe varies by oven. Still, my dog ate them anyway.
Cool idea, but 350°F for 18-20 min felt a little risky for thicker cuts. I’d recommend checking earlier and maybe aiming for more like 15-18 if your shapes are chunky.
Yeah I agree—18-20 at 350° was a bit much for my thicker cuts too. Next time I’m doing closer to 15-17 and checking for “firm” instead of just golden.
