Elevate your grilling game with nature's candy. This irresistible Honey BBQ Sauce relies on pure honey to deliver a delicate floral sweetness and a jaw-dropping, sticky caramelized glaze. It is the absolute ultimate pairing for chicken wings, pulled pork, and slow-roasted ribs!
Servings 16 people
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Ketchup (the classic savory tomato base)
  • 1/2 cup Pure honey (use local wildflower or clover honey for the best flavor)
  • 1/4 cup Apple cider vinegar (cuts through the rich sweetness)
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar (adds a subtle touch of molasses)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for that essential umami kick)
  • 1 tsp Smoked paprika (brings the campfire aroma indoors)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper (freshly ground)

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, pure honey, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk together until the honey is completely dissolved into the liquids.
  • Stir in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, whisking frequently.
  • Once bubbling, immediately reduce the heat to low. Let the sauce simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes. It will slightly thicken and transform into a gorgeous, glossy glaze.
  • Remove from the heat and allow the sauce to cool completely. Transfer it to an airtight jar and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks!

A Match Made in Grilling Heaven: The Ultimate Sweet Honey BBQ Sauce

When you want that glorious, caramelized finish on your grilled meats, relying on nature’s sweetener is the ultimate move. This Sweet Honey BBQ Sauce is a must-have for any backyard cookout because it delivers an unmatched sticky glaze that clings beautifully to baked chicken wings and slow-cooked ribs.

The Secret to a Jaw-Dropping Sweet Honey BBQ Sauce Glaze

Store-bought honey sauces often taste artificial and overly sugary, but making this Sweet BBQ Sauce from scratch in your own kitchen completely changes the culinary game. It is an absolute favorite for these mouthwatering reasons:

  • Flawless Caramelization: The natural sugars in the honey react beautifully under the intense heat of a grill, creating a breathtaking, glossy char.
  • Perfectly Balanced Sweetness: Instead of just tasting like pure corn syrup, the delicate floral notes of the honey play perfectly with the tangy apple cider vinegar.
  • Unbeatable Crowd-Pleaser: Because it is incredibly mild and naturally sweet, kids and adults alike absolutely devour anything coated in this Sweet BBQ Sauce.

Pro Tricks for Mastering Your Sweet Honey BBQ Sauce

Working with natural sugars requires a bit of finesse, but that is what makes crafting this homemade Sweet BBQ Sauce so incredibly rewarding. Follow these essential grilling tips to ensure your glaze reaches its full potential:

  • Glaze at the Very End: Because pure honey burns rapidly at high temperatures, only brush this sauce onto your chicken or ribs during the last 5 to 10 minutes of cooking!
  • Use High-Quality Honey: Skip the cheap imitation syrups. Investing in a pure, locally sourced honey will drastically elevate the entire flavor profile of the condiment.
  • Customize the Consistency: If you prefer a much thicker dipping sauce rather than a glaze, simply let the mixture simmer on the stove for an extra 5 minutes to reduce the liquid further.

Salad dressing is a stretch! You need ketchup for BBQ sauce, I think it’s delish. Just don’t use too much!

I totally get where you’re coming from! Ketchup can give it a weird tang, but maybe the honey balances it out? Worth a try!

Sometimes it just needs more time on the heat. Did you let it simmer long enough? It should thicken up nicely if you follow those steps.

    2. User avatar Murbella says:

      2 stars
Really? Just ketchup and honey? I’m not so sure about this. Sounds too simple to be good. 🤔

  33. User avatar Mr. Annamae Smitham says:

    3 stars
Just okay. I prefer store bought BBQ sauce tbh. Less hassle.

    1. User avatar robby.koelpin96 says:

I get where you’re coming from! Sometimes convenience wins. But this sauce is worth a try, trust me! 🌟

  34. User avatar adolfo.champlin2000 says:

I don’t know about this ‘smoked paprika’… sounds weird. Can I just use regular paprika?

    1. User avatar jeraldine.sawayn60 says:

      4 stars
You can use regular paprika, but it won’t have that smoky flavor. If you really want to try it, go ahead! I always substitute things if I don’t have them.

    2. 3 stars
Don’t be scared! Smoked paprika is just awesome, it gives a nice flavor. But if you want to stick to regular, you do you! Just might taste a bit different.

  35. User avatar Scotty Lowe says:

    4 stars
I ain’t no chef, but this felt really easy to follow. Thanks!

  36. User avatar Grunthos the Flatulent says:

    3 stars
Why do you need smoked paprika? I think regular would have been fine. Just start with what you have!

  37. 4 stars
Easy recipe! I just threw everything together and it was delish! Perfect for BBQs.

  38. 5 stars
This sauce is incredible! The honey gives it a nice sweetness that’s perfect for ribs.

  39. User avatar mona.conroy56 says:

    4 stars
Who knew making BBQ sauce could be so easy? I’m never buying store-bought again! 🙂

  40. 4 stars
It smells so good while it cooks! Can’t stop licking the spoon 😋.

  41. User avatar claude.steuber72 says:

    1 star
Why is there vinegar in BBQ sauce? That’s kinda weird. I usually don’t mix those flavors 🤷‍♂️.

  42. User avatar lakia.pouros says:

    5 stars
Sticky n sweet sauce, perfect for grillin’! yummm

  43. User avatar roxanne.larkin58 says:

    4 stars
Honey BBQ sauce is a classic! Must try this on my ribs. 🥩

  44. User avatar oren.boyle says:

    3 stars
Worchester sauce? Thought it was just brown sugar and honey, but watever 🤷‍♂️

  45. 5 stars
This sauce is amazing!!! So sticky and sweet 😊

  46. User avatar benito.jaskolski11 says:

    4 stars
I used ketchup from the fridge that was opened last year. Tasted just as good! Vouching local honey though.

  47. User avatar karine.price72 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but it was a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down on the honey?

    1. User avatar alex.leannon says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I agree! I found it a bit too much on the sweet side too. Cutting back on honey is a good idea. Maybe I’ll try that next time!

    2. 3 stars
Uh, I actually thought it was perfect! Sweetness is part of BBQ sauce, right? You can always add more vinegar if you’re not a fan of sweet!

  48. User avatar elinore.upton3 says:

    4 stars
1 tsp salt plus ketchup always scares me, but it ended up okay. I’m picky with seasonings; I’d say “to taste” is real—so adjust if your ketchup is salty.

  49. User avatar lowell.wiza1952 says:

    2 stars
I don’t understand why it takes so long to cook. Can’t I just mix it all and eat? This is nonsense.

  50. User avatar melda.halvorson1976 says:

    5 stars
Loved it! But I added some chili powder for extra kick. Highly recommend trying that!

  51. 2 stars
Eh. Seemed pretty basic to me. I was expecting something more gourmet.

    1. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

      3 stars
Basic? It’s BBQ sauce! Sometimes simple is best, you know? Plus, easy to make at home.

    2. User avatar lorretta.pacocha96 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I was also hoping for something a bit fancier, but you can’t go wrong with BBQ sauce, right?

  52. 3 stars
Lol, I forgot the vinegar and it turned out fine too! Just goes to show you don’t need all the stuff.

  53. User avatar jarrett.osinski1950 says:

    5 stars
This sauce is amazing! Used it on ribs and everyone loved it. Definitely making again!

  54. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
I used regular honey and it still turned out great. Garlic powder and onion powder are doing the heavy lifting here. Quick refrigerator sauce = huge win.

  55. User avatar Corrupted Shade says:

    5 stars
I think worcestershire is kinda weird in BBQ sauce, but I tried it anyway. Honestly surprised—it gives it that savory depth. Good stuff.

  56. 3 stars
This is good but way too sweet for my taste. I used 1/4 cup brown sugar instead of 2 tbsp by accident (oops), so maybe that’s on me… still, I’ll cut it down next time.

  57. User avatar ellie.spencer says:

    5 stars
Made this for ribs and it’s freakin’ perfect—sweet but not cloying, and that smoky paprika really shows up.

  58. User avatar chang.russel64 says:

    4 stars
I followed the recipe but mine was more like a sauce than a glaze. Maybe I didn’t simmer long enough—next time I’ll go closer to 20 minutes and see.

  59. User avatar hortencia.schumm58 says:

    5 stars
Made this for ribs last weekend—so glossy and sticky! The apple cider vinegar balance is legit. I did add a tiny pinch of chili flakes for heat and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar jose.renner says:

      4 stars
Made this tonight and yeah… super glossy. I didn’t have smoked paprika so I used regular paprika and it was still tasty. Might try chili flakes next time.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree! The vinegar really keeps it from getting cloying. I also love how it turns into that sticky glaze—so good on ribs.

  60. User avatar Twinrova says:

    5 stars
This tastes like a good store-bought BBQ sauce but better. Honey + vinegar balance is on point.

  61. User avatar basementDweller says:

    4 stars
Followed it exactly, except I let it cool for like 5 minutes and poured it on chicken—still worked but obviously thicker later. Lesson learned lol.

    1. User avatar nelly.kris1993 says:

      5 stars
lol I love that you still tried it even with the quick cool down—honestly that’s exactly how you learn. Yep, thicker later makes total sense with the honey/sugar settling.

    2. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

      4 stars
Same thing happened to me once. I was impatient and used it on ribs right away—tasty, just way thinner. Next time I’ll follow the “cool completely” part.

  62. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    3 stars
I know people say to whisk honey until dissolved, but my honey clumped a bit at first. I just kept whisking and it sorted out.

  63. User avatar calvin.auer13 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I’m skeptical about the worcestershire amount. 1 tbsp made it taste kinda “beefy” on my tongue. Fine for burgers though.

  64. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and it tastes like regular BBQ sauce with a smoky vibe. Works great on wings though, so I’m not mad.

    1. User avatar jeanna.mckenzie1987 says:

      5 stars
I’ve made this exact sauce before—agree it comes out like classic BBQ but smoother and sweeter. Wings are the real win.

  65. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and it tastes okay, but I wanted more smoky flavor. Thinking of adding a pinch of chipotle next time.

    1. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

      5 stars
Love that you stuck to the recipe! Chipotle sounds like the perfect next step for extra smoke without changing the whole vibe.

  66. User avatar roni.parisian9 says:

    5 stars
Honey BBQ is my weakness. This one tastes like something you’d get from a decent BBQ place, not like ketchup sweet sauce.

    1. User avatar Cave Bear says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Honey BBQ is exactly my weakness too 😅 I love that it tastes like legit BBQ instead of just ketchup being sweet. Gonna try this—smoked paprika + cider vinegar sounds perfect.

    2. User avatar onita.carroll79 says:

      4 stars
Honestly I’m kind of skeptical about ketchup + honey, but the vinegar and Worcestershire do make sense. If it’s actually glossy and not overly sweet, I’m in.

  67. User avatar jordon.rolfson says:

    4 stars
Pretty good overall, but mine came out a little too sweet at first. Next time I’ll add a touch more vinegar and maybe less honey.

  68. User avatar zetta.weber8 says:

    5 stars
The smoked paprika really makes it. I thought honey + ketchup would be too much sugar, but the vinegar and Worcestershire balance it nicely. Would definitely make again.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—the smoked paprika is the secret weapon. I didn’t think it’d work with ketchup + honey, but the vinegar/ Worcestershire combo is spot on.

  69. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    3 stars
I added some chili flakes and it was better, but the original recipe alone felt a little too sweet for my liking. Still, easy to make and the ingredients are simple.

  70. 4 stars
My honey didn’t dissolve at first (kinda grainy), but whisking longer fixed it. Still glossy and tasty after it cooled.

  71. User avatar nola.tromp says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid base sauce. I followed the recipe, but next time I’ll simmer 20 min because mine didn’t thicken as much as I wanted.

  72. User avatar August Green says:

    5 stars
Made this for ribs and it turned out way thicker and shinier than I expected. The smoked paprika smell is legit. Will be using this as my go-to BBQ sauce!

  73. User avatar jonas.ullrich says:

    3 stars
Hmm… I made this and it separated a bit after cooling. Tasted fine though. Maybe my honey didn’t fully dissolve—i should’ve whisked harder while simmering.

    1. User avatar burton.west35 says:

      4 stars
That happened to me too! I think my honey crystallized a little since I didn’t whisk constantly at the simmer. Next time I’ll keep it moving more—love this flavor though.

    2. User avatar dominick.johns2011 says:

      5 stars
Mine didn’t separate at all, so it’s probably the way it was heated. Did you keep it at a gentle simmer (not boiling)? I whisk for like 2-3 minutes right when it starts bubbling.

  74. 2 stars
Could you substitute the ketchup with tomato paste? I mean it might be thicker already? Just thinking out loud…

  75. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
The directions say cool completely but then it says keep 2 weeks—mine didn’t last that long, lol. Definitely a crowd pleaser.

  76. User avatar marna.lang says:

    5 stars
5 stars! Smoked paprika smell filled my kitchen. My neighbor asked what I was cooking, so yeah… good stuff.

    1. User avatar lakeisha.ruecker2000 says:

      4 stars
Neighbor tax is real 😂 If the kitchen smells that good, I’d be asking too. One tip: cool it fully before tasting so the sweetness settles.

    2. 5 stars
That description is making me hungry 😄 Smoked paprika + honey BBQ is such a good combo. Did you use it for ribs or more like burgers?

  77. User avatar halflife4 says:

    2 stars
Disappointed… mine turned out super runny and kinda sour? Maybe I simmered too short. Next time I’ll watch it closer.

  78. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
I used local honey like the recipe says and it actually tastes “more alive.” Sweet, tangy, and the Worcestershire makes it way deeper.

    1. User avatar Mr. Graig Buckridge says:

      5 stars
Love this! “More alive” is such a good way to describe honey from local sources. I’m definitely trying Worcestershire with it next time—sounds like it adds that savory depth without making it weirdly sweet.

  79. User avatar susannah.dickinson says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty—sweet but not cloying. I did add a pinch more salt at the end since my ketchup was kinda bland. Next time I’ll probably simmer it 20 minutes to get it even glossier.

  80. User avatar jamel.armstrong says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously easy—stir, simmer, done. The smoked paprika smell while it bubbles is unreal. I’ll never go back to store-bought.

  81. 5 stars
This tastes like BBQ sauce that got its life together. Like sweet, tangy, savory—no weird flavors. Also the jar storage idea is perfect.

    1. User avatar monty.beatty21 says:

      4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about ketchup + honey, but I tried it and it was actually really good. Mine did thicken more like 5 minutes though, not 10–15. Also is it supposed to be Worcestershire or soy sauce? I used what I had and it still worked lol.

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That description is spot on—sweet/tangy/savory with no funky aftertaste. I also love how it turns glossy after the simmer. The jar storage tip is legit—mine disappears too fast 😄

  82. User avatar corrine.gislason2021 says:

    5 stars
I simmered the full 15 minutes and it got that glossy thickness I wanted. Great with chicken thighs. Will repeat.

  83. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    5 stars
This turned out way better than I expected—nice sticky glaze and the vinegar keeps it from being cloying. Smoked paprika is doing the heavy lifting!

    1. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      5 stars
Yes! That vinegar note is the secret—otherwise honey BBQ can get dessert-y fast. Smoked paprika really makes it taste “real,” not just sugary ketchup.

    2. User avatar lyn.zemlak says:

      4 stars
I tried this and mine was good, but I think I maybe boiled it too long? It got kinda thick like syrup. Still tasted great though—would you recommend simmering less if you want it thinner?

  84. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
Made this for ribs and omg… the glaze is unreal. Sweet, smoky, and not cloying at all. I used apple cider vinegar like the recipe says and it really balanced everything.

    1. User avatar lissette.hand1988 says:

      4 stars
I’m skeptical every time I see “not cloying” lol but yours must be right. Gonna try it on ribs—do you brush it on at the start or near the end?

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! The apple cider vinegar tip is everything—cuts the sweetness and keeps it from turning into candy. I used it on chicken wings and it was killer.

  85. User avatar madaline.dietrich66 says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but mine got a bit too thick after cooling—maybe I simmered too long. Next time I’ll pull it sooner.

    1. User avatar ehtel.zieme66 says:

      4 stars
Glad you liked it! I’ve noticed mine can thicken fast too—if it sits after simmering, it keeps going. Pulling it when it’s slightly thinner than you want usually helps.

  86. User avatar corey.jakubowski6 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I’m skeptical about how much it thickens. After 10 minutes it was still kinda thin, so I simmered longer and it finally behaved.

  87. User avatar verdie.hintz says:

I don’t have Worcestershire so I swapped soy sauce + a dash of mustard. Still pretty good, though the flavor is slightly different.

Nice! Soy sauce + mustard is a clever swap for Worcestershire’s umami/vinegary vibe. I’d probably add a tiny splash more vinegar if you want it closer to the original kick.

Not bad, but I expected more “BBQ” flavor. It tastes more like a sweet ketchup situation. Added a pinch of chili powder and a tiny bit of liquid smoke next time and it helped.

Used local honey and extra smoked paprika. Really good on wings and even fries. Will make again for sure.

  90. 2 stars
Way too sweet for me. I’d cut the honey to maybe 1/3 cup. Otherwise it’s okay, but I prefer tangy BBQ sauces.

Honey BBQ sauce?? sounds like a dessert sauce. I’m skeptical, but I’ll give it a try once I’m out of ketchup.

Only thing: 2 weeks in the fridge? Mine got eaten in like 4 days. So… works, I guess. 😅

Not bad, but mine came out runny after cooling. I’m not sure if I didn’t simmer long enough or if my ketchup was too watery. Tastes good though!

This is dangerously easy. I whisked everything and simmered 12 min—came out glossy and sweet-tangy. Perfect for ribs and even drizzled on roasted chicken thighs.

  95. 5 stars
Made this for ribs and it is seriously glossy and sticky in the best way. The honey + vinegar balance is perfect—sweet but not cloying.

Yes!! That honey + vinegar combo is exactly why this doesn’t turn into dessert sauce. Glad it worked for your ribs.

Smoked paprika is the move. I added it and immediately smelled BBQ heaven. Simple recipe, works.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! Smoked paprika really makes it taste like it came off a grill. I did basically the same thing and it was instantly a crowd-pleaser.

Totally agree—when it hits the hot sauce, it smells unreal. I usually add a tiny pinch of chili flakes too, just because 😄

Not sure about the ketchup + honey combo at first, but the Worcestershire and smoked paprika totally carry it. I’m keeping this recipe for quick BBQ nights.

I didn’t have smoked paprika so I used regular paprika and a dash of liquid smoke. Still tasted good, just less “campfire”.

I’m tempted to do this too, but liquid smoke can get overpowering fast. Did you use like a real dash or more? 😅

That’s exactly the vibe I’d try—regular paprika with a tiny bit of liquid smoke sounds like a smart workaround. Glad it still turned out good!

Honestly, ketchup + honey + vinegar just feels wrong. Like why not buy BBQ sauce from the store? But I guess the smoky paprika helps. I tried it once and it was okay.

I get what you mean—ketchup + honey sounds like a weird combo at first. But the vinegar and Worcestershire balance it out way more than you’d expect. I think the smoked paprika is the real “BBQ” vibe-maker.

Nah I kinda like it. BBQ sauce from the store tastes like sugar water half the time. This one actually tastes homemade to me—sweet, tangy, not too heavy. I’d do it again.

Too sweet for my taste. I love honey BBQ but this one leaned kinda dessert-y. If you’re sensitive to sweetness, I’d use less honey or more vinegar/salt.

Pretty solid. I cut the honey just a bit because my ketchup is already sweet, but the smoked paprika + Worcestershire combo is genius. Next time I’ll simmer 2-3 minutes longer to thicken more.

I like the tweaks. I’m curious—if you cut honey and it’s already sweet, what do you do with the vinegar? Feel like it might get too tangy or still balances fine?

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! That smoked paprika + Worcestershire combo really does something. I’ve done similar with my own BBQ sauces and it always tastes “restauranter.” Your 2–3 min longer idea makes sense for a thicker glaze.

  102. 2 stars
I tried it and it was kinda bland. Could be my paprika (old jar) or I didn’t let it cool long enough. Otherwise it looked like BBQ sauce, but the flavor didn’t pop.

    1. User avatar charley.lehner37 says:

Aw man, “kinda bland” is disappointing 😕 I wonder if it needed more salt/pepper or an extra splash of vinegar. Old smoked paprika can definitely go flat too.

Not bad at all. Next time I’ll add a pinch more salt because mine tasted a little sweet-only.

  104. User avatar lon.strosin says:

I followed it but mine came out kinda runny. Could be I didn’t simmer long enough? Also I think I over-salted a bit—my “1/2 tsp” turned into like a whole tsp because I eyeballed it… oops.

  105. User avatar lloyd.kovacek92 says:

Way too sweet for me. I think 1/2 cup honey is a lot—maybe cut it to 1/3 cup if you’re watching sugar.

Not sure why it says “cool completely” — I poured it on right away and it was still fine lol. Flavor was good though, especially the garlic/onion powders. Might try storing next time.

  107. 4 stars
Quick question: do you actually let it cool completely before using? I kinda used it warm and it was thinner.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the ketchup + honey combo. It’s still sweet, but balanced. Worcestershire is the secret, I think.

    1. 3 stars
Ketchup and honey… sounds wrong lol. But if Worcestershire is doing the heavy lifting, I’ll try it. Any idea if it gets too sweet or thickens like BBQ sauce?

    2. User avatar franklyn.labadie says:

I was skeptical too, but the vinegar + Worcestershire really makes it click. The smoky paprika is such a good touch.

Honey + ketchup + vinegar… sounds kinda weird but I tried anyway. It’s okay, I guess. Maybe I’ll do half the honey next time. 😅

The measurements are a little wild—like 1/2 cup honey then only 1/2 tsp salt. I added more salt and it popped.
