Caramelized onions are a sweet and savory addition to many dishes, adding depth of flavor with their rich, golden-brown color.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 medium onions yellow or sweet onions work best
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil extra virgin olive oil preferred
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar optional, for extra flavor

Instructions
 

  • Peel the onions and slice them thinly into half-moons.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and stir to coat them in the oil.
  • Sprinkle with salt and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they turn a deep golden brown, about 40-45 minutes.
  • If using, add balsamic vinegar in the last few minutes of cooking for additional flavor.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using.
