Instructions
Peel the onions and slice them thinly into half-moons.
Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and stir to coat them in the oil.
Sprinkle with salt and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they turn a deep golden brown, about 40-45 minutes.
If using, add balsamic vinegar in the last few minutes of cooking for additional flavor.
Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using.
