Step into the golden age of mixology with the definitive spirit-forward cocktail. The Old Fashioned is a minimalist masterpiece designed to do one thing: let the quality of your whiskey shine. By gently enhancing a premium bourbon or rye with a touch of sugar and aromatic bitters, this timeless drink delivers a bold, smooth, and deeply complex flavor profile. It is a sophisticated sipper that never goes out of style.
2ozBourbon or Rye whiskey(Because this is a spirit-forward drink, choose a high-quality bottle that you enjoy sipping on its own)
1pieceSugar cube(Can be substituted with 1/4 oz of simple syrup for a smoother mix)
2 to 3dashesAngostura bitters(Adds the essential botanical and spice notes)
1splashWater(Just a few drops to help muddle the sugar cube)
1 largeIce cube(A single large cube melts slower, preventing the drink from watering down too quickly)
1pieceOrange peel (For expressing the essential citrus oils over the drink)
Instructions
Place the sugar cube into the bottom of a heavy-bottomed rocks glass (also known as an Old Fashioned glass).
Add 2 to 3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a tiny splash of water directly onto the sugar cube.
Use a wooden muddler to gently crush the sugar cube and stir it into a gritty paste at the bottom of the glass.
Place one large, solid ice cube into the glass.
Pour the bourbon or rye whiskey directly over the ice.
Using a long bar spoon, gently stir the cocktail for about 20 to 30 seconds to properly chill the liquid and lightly dilute the strong spirit.
Take your fresh orange peel and gently squeeze it over the glass to express the fragrant citrus oils onto the surface of the drink. Drop the peel into the glass as a garnish and serve!
